I hope your reading slump isn't/wasn't as bad as mine.
I bought this book when I was 19 along with other books from BookSale, picked it up when I was 26, and just finished reading it at 27.
I can only remember I've read two books before these. Maybe I've read more but the two books I'm referring to are still here. I've not given them away or sold them so that's why it's the only two I can remember.
But it just felt too long before I finally read this.
๐๐๐ ๐ ๐๐๐๐ ๐๐ข๐ฃ๐ ๐๐ฌ ๐๐๐ฆ๐๐๐ฌ ๐ฃ๐๐๐ฅ๐ฆ๐?
Yes. I liked it!
This is the second book that I've read authored by Lesley Pearse and I doubt it's the last.
The main thing that I appreciate about Lesley Pearse's writing is that her main characters are not intolerable. For me, I understood immediately why they are the way that they are once I've read more about the circumstances they were dealt with. But they were never annoying.
Sure, there were things they did that I protested they should not have done and thought more about before doing it but they were not the type that I'd be so frustrated with.
Know the kind of protagonists that we only tolerate because their lovers are hot and we're more invested on the lover but not them? It's not like that at all!
Not with Dulcie Taylor from her work Trust Me. And definitely not with Hope Renton from this book.
I liked Hope's man, Bennett, but I liked Hope more and was very much rooting for her that through the plot twists and turns in this book I had no choice but to yell โGive this woman a break!โ at 3 o'clock in the morning.
The next thing that I like the most about Lesley Pearse's writing was that she wrote what needed to be read and left to your imagination what should be left for it to work out.
Throughout the chapters, had she written what needed to be left to your mind to paint a picture of, I felt like it was going to be a drag.
And it was already a slow and steady read for me because it's a Historical Fiction and my brain needs to ease into the setting and scenes. Doesn't matter if you're the best author in the Universe, my brain still needs time to really get into it. Unlike novels in modern settings that I could relate quickly or within a fair amount of time to.
But I was relieved to have not read in great detail about the situations I felt was smart to not have been written as it was happening.
And she's Lesley Pearse. Her โstoryshowingโ is superb! (An attempt at the โShow don't tell.โ advice for writers lol)

What I did not like about this book is...
๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐! ๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐! ๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐!
I wanted to know more about Nell and Angus' relationship. I liked the last dialogue by Rufus and I am fine with Lesley Pearse leaving it up to my imagination of what the rest of the Renton's reactions was but still.
I was rooting for Nell and Angus like how I was rooting for every minor relationship in the books I've read and shows I've watched.
The thing is, when I feel secure about the protagonist's relationship with her counterpart in a novel, a film, or a series, my heart finds a second couple to root for and in this book it was Nell and Angus.
I really wanted to know if they got married. If their courtship was lovely and filled with tenderness and charm as I would have liked because Angus was THE kind of man you'd want in your life despite of what happened with Lady Harvey.
Hope suffered a great deal but Nell, too. And she deserves to have a lovely relationship with a Angus!
Well, in my mind they are definitely married and had the cutest courtship ever. I imagine her relationship with Angus was everything and more that what she went through with Albert was more of a far distant memory of the woman she once was and she's already made peace with her.

On a scale of 1 to 5 stars, I give it 4 stars! โญโญโญโญ

Halo! I'm Bali of Bluer Than Berries. I'm a reader from the ๐ต๐ญ and I mostly buy secondhand books that were published [many] years before. I also buy recently published books but not as much as I'd like. I created this blog so I never have to experience a long reading slump again.
There are so many books in this world and I feel it's important to have an outlet to talk about what you've read so you can move on to another book properly. I encourage you to do the same!
Whatever your choice of outlet is, I encourage you to talk about that book before reading another.
