My PCOS Friends, this one’s for you!

If we don’t first prioritize fixing the broken systems in our body (like a disrupted gut microbiome, hormonal imbalances in the endocrine system, etc), we’ll only spin our wheels trying tackle symptom after symptom.

If we support our body’s broken systems and help repair them, our body will do what it does best… heal!

If you’re looking to start supporting your body’s broken systems and tackle they “why” behind all your PCOS symptoms,DM me “ROOT CAUSE”! I’d love to help you find the path to health and wholeness!

The gut is key to health. About 80% of our immune system is based there. It is pivitol for digesting and using the food we eat. If the balance in our gut microbiome gets disrupted, it can disrupt every other area of our body, including our hormones and skin health.

When we are dealing with hormonal acne, one of the best places to begin to focus on is our gut health. How do we do that?

There are several places. Focus on eating fruits and veggies. When eating, try to eat balanced meals (that contain carbs, proteins, fats, and fiber). High-quaility probiotics can be very helpful for some individuals. These tend to be some great starting places.

Well… I know this may be controversial, but Christmas has officially sprung in the Crehan household! 🎅🎄

While I know some of you are post-Thanksgiving 🦃 decorators, I think we can all find common ground in the fact that the holidays, while wonderful, can also be an incredibly busy and stressful season. And that’s not even touching the stress of family photos when you are battling hormonal acne.

Ughh 😩

It’s sooo embarrassing, having a breakout right before you’re going to see the distant relatives you only see once a year. The blemishes that are so clearly seen in every picture of you.

What if the story was different? What if you were finally able to have clear, healthy skin? What if you could show up to the holiday dinners with confidence, not dreading Aunt Millie’s ever-clicking camera? I want that for you!

If you’ve tried everything to get rid of your acne but nothing has seemed to work, I invite you to take the Hormonal Acne quiz (🔗 in bio). It’s very possible hormonal imbalances are 🗝 to solving the puzzle of clear skin for good!

Happy holidays! 🦃🎄🎅🎇

The final tally: 23 🎃!!!

It's been a long time coming, but we finally harvested our pumpkins. Personally, I think they make the perfect fall decorations! One lesson I've learned this season in gardening is you have to have the right nutrients, the right conditions, and the right tools to grow a good garden.

Our health is much the same. If we try to tackle one component of health (let's say fitness, for instance) and only focus on that one area, we are essentially throwing paint at a wall. Yes, some will stick, but we will never reach our full potential and we will never meet our health goals unless we have the right tools and strategies to help us get there.

Do you want clear skin, free from the bondages of hormonal acne? Join me LIVE next Tuesday, November 1st at 7pm where I walk you through the pilars of gaining healthy, glowing skin (🔗 in bio). Can't make it live? The replay will be availible after.

Hope to see you there!

Today, let’s define what Acne is:

Essentially, Acne is an inflammatory issue of the skin. The skin has little glands (called the sebaceous glands) that produce oil. This gland connects to the hair follicles (where hair is grown). Typically, when dealing with balanced, healthy skin, the gland makes and releases oil (sebum) through a tiny opening on the skin (which is callled a pore). Dead skin cells also work their way to the surface to be shed. This is what typically happens.

In acne, we see this natural process of oil and dead skin being released - become disrupted. Instead what we see is the oil from the gland, the hair inside the folicle, and the dead skin get trapped inside the pore. This becomes the perfect breeding ground for bacteria (Cutibacterium acnes), which causes pimples, zits, and red patches of skin to develop, which we call acne.

There’s a lot more too it, so we’ll be going through this in more detail throughout the week. If you’re struggling with hormonal acne, I want to personally invite you to the ➡️➡️ 3 Steps to Clearer Skin live Facebook class (🔗 in bio) next Tuesday, November 1 from 7-8pm EST. ⬅️⬅️

It’s completely free and will be loaded with lots of helpful information. If you can’t make it live, there will be a replay available. Hope to see you there! 🙌

2. Eat 5 servings of fruits and veggies each day. Hormonal acne can often be a sign of nutrient deficieincies. Fruits and veggies have a broad range of nutrients, so the more variety we eat, the better.

3. Drink at least 8 glasses of water each day. Water is essential to help detoxify our bodies, which plays a huge role in clearing up our skin.

36lb Watermelon… not bad for the first time growing them in a raised bed!

Watermelon is an incredibly hydrating and nutrient rich food. It is high in vitamin C, potassium, copper, vitamin B5, Vitamin A, citrulline, & lycopene.

Incorporating nutrient-rich foods into our diet is so important when we are working to improve hormonal acne and skin health.

3 Signs you Have Hormonal Acne

1. Breakouts are more severe near your period.

There is a naturally rhythm to our hormones, and fluctuations near our period are normal. In PCOS, these hormonal shifts are often much more drastic, and can lead to an acne flareup.

2. You notice facial hair growing on your chin/jawline.

High androgens (male-dominant hormones) are often present in PCOS. These can lead to the growth of facial hair. If you are experiencing this along with acne, you may be experiencing hormonal acne.

3.You experience frequent mood swings.

Hormone fluctuations can cause sharp mood swings. If you are experiencing this along with acne, you may be experiencing hormonal acne.

Acne... It's the stuff of our teenage nightmares.

While acne often resolves once we exit our pubescent years, when we struggle with PCOS, this is often not the case.

In PCOS, acne is heavily tied to hormonal imbalances. Since these imbalances are often a key contributor to most (if not all) of our unpleasant PCOS symptoms, tackling these underlying issues can help us finally start clearning up our skin (for good!).

Are you struggling with acne but aren't sure if it's related to hormonal imbalances? Check out the FREE Hormonal Acne quiz (link in bio) to find out!

Choices.
At the end of the day, all of life can be summed up into that one word.

The average adult makes 35,000 choices a day, around 200-300 of these decisions revolve around food. While this number may seem small by comparison, this comes out to roughly 100,000 food decisions we make EVERY SINGLE YEAR. Everything we put into our bodies is going to impact our physiology, our blood sugar, our cell function, immune system, etc. While it is ok to occasionally indulge, the daily habits we make have a significant long term impact on how we’re going to feel down the road.

If we regularly choose whole foods that are going to give our bodies the vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients we need, we’re going to feel much better in the long run.

So, today, what are you doing to promote long term health and longevity?
I’d love to hear from you! Comment below!

When we are struggling with insulin resistance, there is a lot going on in our bodies.

Primarily, insulin resistance refers to insulin being less effective moving glucose from the blood into the cells. This leads to high blood sugar…

Since our bodies do not like having too much glucose in the blood, it uses any means necessary to get levels lowered.

This includes trying to force glucose into our fat cells (storing glucose for energy later). This can prevent our bodies from burning fat for energy.

Over time, we can find losing weight very difficult.

What can we do?

1. Work to balance blood sugar
2. Develop an active lifestyle
3. Decrease overall insulin resistance

Dark patches of skin (medically termed “Acanthosis Nigricans”) often develop in the skinfolds of the body (think armpits, groin, behind the neck, etc) in individuals who struggle with blood sugar control.

The condition does not usually cause any physical discomfort, but can be embarrassing for some.

The good news: if insulin resistance is decreased and blood sugar levels are kept steady, over time, the dark patches tend to lighten up to their natural skin tone!

3 Tips to keep Blood Sugar Balanced this Independence Day

Stay Hydrated
* The summer sun can quickly dehydrate us. Dehydration concentrates the blood sugar and can lead to higher readings. By drinking plenty of water.

Don’t Skip the Fruits and Veggies
* Most of America will be enjoying the delicacies of pitch-in's and BBQs for the 4th. While enjoying some of the goodies, be sure to include fruits and veggies!

Choose Your Protein
* Make sure to incorporate protein into your meals. Protein takes longer to break down in our stomachs and can help prevent sharp spikes in blood sugar.
