Today is Buffalo Soldiers Day, which commemorates an act passed by Congress on July 28, 1866. After the American Civil War, Congress wanted to reorganize the military for peacetime serviceβand this 1866 act created several all-Black infantry and cavalry regiments. These men eventually became known as Buffalo Soldiers.
The Buffalo Soldiers played a vital role in Indian Territory as well as in other regions of the West. The 9th Cavalry, 10th Cavalry, and 24th Infantry all served in present-day Oklahoma in the late 19th century.

and even throughout the years we fought for Freedom from oppression to suppression and back to oppression. Our fight for our rights is a neverending story. Take time to reflect and celebrate the meaning of this day Juneteenth! My people were freed by treaties after 1865. Actually it did not happen until 1866 with the U.S. drafting peace treaties with the Five Civilized Tribes. My ancestors were enslaved by the Muscogee Creek Nation and later freed in 1866. Know your history...βπΎβ€οΈπ€π
On June 19, 1865, U.S. Army Maj. Gen. Gordon Granger proclaimed the end of slavery at Galveston, Texas. News of emancipation spread north to the enslaved people in Indian Territory (present-day Oklahoma) at different times during the summer of 1865. However, emancipation was not immediate for all enslaved peopleβit was enforced later through the Reconstruction Treaties of 1866.
