Jan 13 also marked the death of Thomas Dukelow, Phoebe Graydon's husband. Thomas was born on Sep 15, 1855 in Wilfrid, ON to Charles Dukelow and Mary Beamish. He married Phoebe Graydon on Dec 28, 1881 at St Paul's church in Beaverton, ON. He worked as a farmer his entire life in the Beaverton and Woodville areas. He and Phoebe had 5 children: William Henry John Oscar born 1882, Thomas Melbourne Graydon Melville born 1884. George Alfred born 1887, Mary Alice Edna born 1890, and Samuel Oswald born 1892 all in Beaverton, ON. After the death of his wife Thomas moved to Peterborough to live with his daughter at 626 George St N. He died on Jan 13, 1937 of myocarditis and pulmonary edema and was buried at the Old Stone Church Cemetery in Beaverton with Phoebe on Jan 16, 1937.
Jan 13 marked the marriage of William Thomas Davies to Rebecca Truman Brakenborough, Mabel Graydon's grandparents. William was born in April 1844 to John Davies and Elizabeth Cole. John Davies lived and worked as a carter in Birmingham, England. Rebecca was born to William Truman Brakenborough and Sarah Eaglestone in Jan 1847. William Brakenborough lived and worked as a blacksmith in Norfolk, England. Rebecca was baptised on April 11, 1847. William and Rebecca married on Jan 13, 1867 at St Peter's church in Regent Square, London, England. William worked as a solicitior's clerk and they lived in London all their lives. They had 5 children: Mary Elizabeth born April 17, 1868, William Truman born May 16, 1870, Thomas Bell born May 26. 1872, Frederick born Aug 13, 1874 and George Ernest (Mabel Graydon's father) born Oct 24, 1876. William died on Jun 2, 1900 and Rebecca died in July 1907.
Today marks the birthday of Alice Henrietta Graydon, the youngest child of Samuel Graydon and Henrietta Treacy. She was born on Jan 12, 1867 in Gravenhurst, ON after the Graydons immigrated to Canada the previous year. The Graydons lived in Muskoka, ON around the 1870s and by 1881 had settled in Beaverton, ON. Alice moved with her family, except her sister Phoebe, to Manitoba between 1885 and 1886 to the promise of free land to farmers. She married Joseph David Sullivan on Dec 23, 1890 in Emerson MB. Alice and Joseph had 4 children: Francis James born in 1891, George Henry born in 1893, Tracy William born in 1895 and Lenore Kathleen born in 1897. A few facts: family wanted Alice to name her first born "Samuel" but she named him Francis, and Francis and Tracy were both born on Sept 30 4 years apart. Alice and Joseph lived and farmed in the Franklin, MB area all their lives until Joseph's death in 1939. Alice then moved to Melfort, SK to live with Francis and his family until her death. She died on July 11, 1957, at the age of 90, 4 years after her son Tracy and the year before her daughter Lenore. Alice is buried with Joseph at Dominion City Cemetery in Dominion City, MB.
Jan 7 marks the birthday of Charles Churcher, Mary Jane Graydon's father. He was born in 1807 the eldest of 9 children born to George Churcher and Martha Knight in Droxford, England. He married Martha Ann Sanger (most records I've found show she went by the name "Ann") on July 14, 1827 in Droxford and they had 10 or possibly 11 children. Charles' wife "Ann" and his daughter Martha Ann both died within 5 days of each other in Sept 1851. Charles later married Harriet (Saunders) Sturmey with whom he had 4 more daughters. Thirza 1856, Alice 1858, Ellen 1858/59, Mary Jane 1860. The lineage of these daughters is unconfirmed as marriage records show Charles and Harriet were married on April 17, 1859. Harriet's first husband had died in 1850 and she had 7 children with him so it's possible that Charles and Harriet married more out of convenience to help each other raise their children. Charles worked as a labourer and was in and out of workhouses from the early 1860s until his death. His wife Harriet died in 1866 in the South Stoneham Workhouse in Bedfordshire where she was with her daughter Ellen. Her other daughters and Charles were housed at the Fareham Workhouse in Fareham. After Harriet's death I can find no record of Ellen and shortly after Charles' death Alice and Mary Jane immigrated to Canada. Charles died in the Fareham Workhouse in June 1868. He was buried on June 4, 1868 at St Peter & St Paul Church with his wife Ann and daughter Martha Ann.
Jan 4 marked the birthday of George Churcher, Mary Jane Graydon's grandfather (Mort Graydon's great grandfather). He was born in 1777 in Droxford, England, the 2nd of 5 children born to John Churcher and Diana Hodgkins. He married Martha Knight on June 26, 1806 in Titchfield, Hampshire, England and they had 9 children. He worked as a labourer in Droxford his entire life. He died 1 year after his son Charles (Mary Jane's father) on June 15, 1869. His estate was less than 100 pounds at the time of his death.
January 3 marked the birthday of Adam Morton Graydon. "Mort" was the youngest of 7 children born to Samuel Graydon and Mary Jane Churcher in Dominion City, MB. Just before his 3rd birthday his father, Samuel, died and then 2 months after he turned 3 his older sister Emma died. He had another sister Henrietta who died just 13 months before he was born as well. At this point in his life he went to live with his Uncle Robert and Aunt Margaret at the request of Mary Jane who seemed not able to raise a toddler after dealing with so much death. Mort's brother Edwin and sister Alice were 7 and 9 at the time of Samuel's death so I believe Mary Jane simply couldn't cope with raising her children at this time. Robert and Margaret had had a still born son in 1901 so raising Mort probably helped them deal with that loss too. They later had a daughter Pearl in 1912 but she died at the age of 8 in 1920. Mort lived at 69 Isabel St in Winnipeg until he married. Mort was not told about this arrangement until the early 1920s when he announced his plans to marry. He married Mabel Emily Davies on June 29, 1922 in Winnipeg, MB. Mort and Mabel were married for 53 years and had 8 children:
Robert George - born 1923 - died 1995
Edwin Morton - born 1924 - died aged 15 months 1926
Wilfred Thomas - born 1926 - died aged 18 years 1944
Jacqueline Marie - born 1927 - died aged 2 1/2 months 1927
Dorothy Alice - born 1929 - died 2009
Margaret Evelyn - born 1930
Melba - born 1933
Kathleen Mary Elizabeth born 1936 - died 2022
Mort and Mabel lived in Winnipeg, MB, Saskatoon, SK, Calm Lake, ON, and Fort Frances, ON. Mort worked as an electrician for the Ontario/Minnesota Pulp & Paper Company from 1927 until he retired in 1966. Mort and Mabel lived at 1126 Church St in Fort Frances when he died on March 11, 1975. He is buried with Mabel at Riverview Cemetery in Fort Frances, ON.
