GAME 5 (Game 4 was a bye) vs DONNYBROOK/CAPEL
With Lee Clark sleeping through the alarm or missing the memo of the early 9.30 start back in Capel, the stage was set for a playoff for 2nd against archrivals Donnybrook/Capel.
Mead, again showing his innovation as Captain, assigned Johnston to be the official shoelace tier for anyone who was unable to bend down far enough, after a gruelling few days of cricket.
Losing the toss, Skipper Mead opened the bowling with Bomber Lids and soon had the opposition in trouble. With off spinner East trying to get the attention of Mead for the last 3 games to try and get a bowl, Mead finally succumb and East’s confidence was justified with a wicket maiden off his first over.
When Bayman took the advice of Mead to bowl full and straight the kids playing in the playground were in a little danger until a direct hit from Femia ended the innings, with WBCA chasing 122.
Mills, finally thought it was time to loosen the screws and set his team up for victory, retiring on 40. Even with a steady flow of wickets, the WBCA boys always looked in control passing the total with a few overs to spare, with Clarke and Bayman both scoring 20, to help WBCA finish second again behind winners, Upper Great Southern.
A big thank you must go to the WBCA committee for supporting the carnival and giving their past players a chance to reunite with their teammates as well as the opposition.
Also, a huge thanks must go to CAPEL CRICKET CLUB for their hospitality and making it our second home as we look forward to the 2025 campaign.
All scores can be found on the Play Cricket or Player HQ Apps
Thanks again to Femsy for the above right up
Also thanks to Jodi Johnston for her work on the WBCA Masters 🖤💛 shirts & Manjimup Monograms. They look amazing and were well received by players, opposition teams and spectators alike
GAME 2 vs UPPER GREAT SOUTHERN
With the full support of his teammates Lagana went back out to face the first ball against the $1.01 favourites Upper Great Southern, who were fielding five Ex State Country XI players. With a massive appeal for an LBW first ball against Lagana, the crowd was on the edge of their seat and the umpire giving the benefit of the doubt to the batsman. Lagana never looked back retiring on 41, even though a few questions were asked when he was dropped by the Best Man at his wedding! Weddings seems to be the flavour of the day with Bamess apparently unavailable for Game 2, due to a ‘Suit Fitting’.
Solid contributions from Johnston 16 and Mills 13 moved the score along to 98. With a book ‘allegedly’ running on who could score the most 6s for the weekend, Murphy came out to bat, and like a junior Pablo Picasso, was stroking the ball to all parts of the ground, including the bitumen of Blair St, with 3 sixes off 4 balls and a quick fire 25 to get the total to a competitive 125.
After a few issues were sorted with the ageing pine seating, Bomber and Bayman again opened the bowling and an early LBW off the bowing off Bomber Liddelow, had the WBCA boys with a spring in their step. With Jason Treasure setting the example in the field, with the ball following him to all parts of the ground, Dean McGregor tried to follow suit and save an imminent boundary in typical fashion, but the turf was harder than his kneecap and Johnston, who had been resting for the first 10 overs, bought on as a replacement...
With the next 2 batters retiring on 40 the game was soon out of reach with Upper Great Southern passing the total in the 16th over.
With the fines session over and the kitty overflowing, Skipper Mead ordered his troops not far down the Highway for a compulsory debrief.
GAME 3 vs BUNBURY RED
After team tactics were discussed at length the previous evening, Skipper Mead decided it was time to change things up a little and throw Bunbury Red off their game, back at Capel Cricket Ground. Evergreen Troy Gibellini, Clark, Femia, Treasure and Lagana were all thrown the ball in the search for wickets. Treasure, with two was the standout as well as the Googly’s of Lagana with one.
With Bunbury Reds total starting to build, undoubtedly the turning point of the game was the Gibellini/Bamess run out. With the ball hit towards the deep cover boundary a certain boundary was stopped by Bamess. With the batsman turning for two, Gibelllini was not expecting the throw to be ball thrown as quickly and accurately as it was and had to race back to the stumps after his extensive follow through, reaching to take the ball on the full and whip the bails off, with the batsman millimetres out of his ground. With Bayman, Bomber and Mead taking one, two and two wickets respectively a chasable total of 124 was reached.
Again, with Mead thinking outside the box, Bayman who was on a keg and Jeffery who was yet to bat were thrown in at the top of the order. Bayman, playing the Sheet Anchor role was off the keg, scoring 3 in the 32-run opening wicket partnership. Jeffery has a point to prove with 9 boundaries in an exquisite innings, striking at 200 and retiring on 40.
This bought Gibellini and Bamess to the crease. With Gibellini building a solid picket fence the partnership seemed to be cruising until a Bamess attempted reverse sweep had Todd East striding out to the middle, with the score on 97. Composure was in order and Gibellini and East finishing not out on 17 and 23 respectively and the score passed in the 17th over.
With the WBCA having the Saturday afternoon bye it was again Skipper Mead who felt there was still room for improvement, with the post-game analysis starting early not far down the Highway.
Fems
MASTERS 2024, 40+, kicked off with the WBCA fielding a contingent of 15 players which was helped by the Pemberton Cricket Club finally organizing their Malimup Fishing Trip on a different weekend….
GAME 1 vs PEEL MAROON
After a quick team meeting and a Steak and Mushroom Pie at the Balingup Café it was off along the back roads for a 10.00am kick off at the Capel Cricket Ground. A quick check of the Capel Shire Depot in case of any potential extra fill ins was done and soon Skipper Tristan Mead, overseeing his 3rd year of captaincy, saw him win the toss and bat.
Ben Lagana and Peter Bamess strode out to bat with Bamess showing his experience in not taking the first ball, with the first ball of the innings pitching a foot outside Off stump to clip Lagana’s leg stump and the Champagne corks were popping.
The nerves of the Pemberton connection, Peter Bamess and Gary Mills, were on display early as they were trying to find their footing and the tempo of the Masters competition. Soon the WBCA was in early trouble at 3/14. Angelo Femia and Luke Murphy then steadied the ship taking the shine off the 6 stitcher on a still lively Capel Pitch, taking the score beyond 40. The Boyup Brook Bandits Lee Clark and skipper Mead then put the foot to the floor with 37 and 25 respectively. Mat Johnston and John ’Bomber’Liddelow, both playing for red ink then helped get the total to 153.
Dan Bayman and Bomber took the new ball, with Bomber taking every opportunity to get as many deliveries as possible in on his spell with the extras column filling fast. Things we evenly poised halfway through Peel’s innings, when Skipper Mead showed his experience to bring Dave Jeffery into the attack, in a move which raised the eyebrows of a few teammates. With the ball going to all parts of the ground Peel’s main batsman had to retire on 40, with Jeffery then working his magic with 3 wickets and Murphy and Bayman two each, to take the WBCA to a 51-run victory.
Thanks to Fems for the write ups. More to follow
What an amazing effort. Well done to Boyup Brook Cricket Club and everyone involved for pulling together an amazing event for such a great cause

The grand final between Forestry and Boyup Brook proved to be a tight contest between the two best teams of the season.
In what was perhaps an omen of the closeness of the contest to follow the opening coin toss landed on its side and the toss had to be done again. Boyup won the reflip and chose to bat first to make first use of a good pitch.
Opener Braydon Ridley and Jacob Maw started steady with Maw taking the more aggressive role early. His timing and placement was spot on from ball one and he continually put Forestry’s opening bowlers of Connor Ipsen (2/23 off 5.1ov) and Brock Tempra (0/16 off 5ov) under pressure. Ridley’s start seemed more steady than some of his innings throughout what has been an amazing season from Boyup’s Skipper, there was a determined effort to bat long and deep to help lead his team to a competitive total.
It was Ipsen that removed Maw for 23 (16) bowled through the gate to get the initial break through. This brought Todd Carrol to the wicket, and he started to form a steady partnership with Ridley before Braden Gibellini (1/11 off 5ov) had him lifting a ball to Tempra at short cover. This brought Tristan Mead to the crease for the most significant partnership in the innings. Both Mead and Ridley looked in control of their game with both defending the good bowling but punishing anything loose.
With the partnership on 45 and Boyup looking to continually build on 2/87 in the 21st over Jos Smith got the vital wicket of Mead, lbw for 30 (29). The very next ball David Cowan was removed bowled by Smith and the game had changed momentum back to Forestry.
It was then Smith who brought Ridley’s 29 (86) patient innings to an end bowled as Ridley looked to whip the ball through the leg side. It was from there that a steady flow of wickets fell with the catch from Blake Johnston at midwicket the highlight to remove Josh Miller. Both Scott Tweedie 9 (29) and Alex Tweedie 9 (13) offered some resistance, but no other batsmen were able to get their innings going.
Jos Smith as well support by Kayne Aitken (2/20 off 8ov) and proved to be a good partnership bowling pair. Boyup were eventually all out for 111.
In reply, openers Sam Vellios and Kayne Aitken mad a steady start with Vellios 7 (23) first man out playing his favored pull shot caught by Josh Thompson at midwicket off the bowling of Todd Carroll (2/19 off 5ov). Carroll and Jacob Maw (1/35 off 7.2) bowled tight and consistently with even Aitken playing a more sedate innings than his normal attacking role. Carroll had his second wicket when he bowled Blake Johnston for 4 (15) to have Forestry at 2/36 after 9.3 overs.
This brought Connor Ipsen to the crease to join Aitken and this when the game looked to move away from Boyup as Ipsen showed his class to pick apart the Boyup bowling. With a mixture of good running and power hitting Ipsen along with Aitken moved the score along to 78 before the introduction of Ridley bowling his accurate leg spinners brought the downfall of Aitken for 24 (40).
Ridley then picked up his opposition captain Tempra for 4 (9) to bring it to 4/91. With 21 runs to win and Ipsen still at the crease the total looked well in hand with more than 25 overs still remaining young Rueben Hill (15yr) was promoted to 6. Hill applied himself well keeping out some great bowling from Ridley and was looking to be a stable partner to the more experienced Ipsen.
Ipsen was able to get his fifty, 51 (42), with 3 fours and five sixes before he played over a delivery from Ridley to be bowled and leave Forestry 5 down still needing 6 for victory.
What happened next was quite extraordinary and a testament to the fight from the Boyup Brook Cricket Club to never give up. Ridley leading from the front then took another two wickets in the over to remove both Lewis-James Metcalfe and Kallan Fall. Metcalfe caught by Keeper Mead with a good running catch and Fall bowled by a ripper pitching middle and leg and turning past the bat to hit off. 7-106. In the next over Maw was back on to bowl at Hill 0 (14) and Hill was able to resist for the first three deliveries but was bowled by Maw on the fourth ball. 8/106.
Next ball Maw sent the delivery down the legside to Jethro Namnik which was initially fumbled by the keeper Mead. The batsmen took the opportunity to take what looked to be a safe single. It was then a moment of brilliance from Mead to then follow up his fumble, take of the glove, slide into the ball and turn and through from the ground to get the direct hit to run out Gibellini. The old adage of not running on a miss-field ringing true. 9/107. Forestry had lost 5/1 with the run being the wide on the run out and things were now looking shaky for the Forestry team with Boyup up and about with the chance to pull off an amazing victory from nowhere.
It was then up to Jos Smith and Namnik to try and secure the six runs and secure the Premiership. Both batsmen showed poise and calmness that had been lacking earlier to calmly take their team to victory with Namnik 2 (4) with a two through cover to win the title for Forestry with Smith 3 (5).
It was an amazing contest that looked destined to fizzle out to its inevitable conclusion till the will of Boyup Brook lead by Captain Braydon Ridley almost pulled of the greatest of comeback victories.
Well done to both teams for a hard-fought contest. The game was played tough but fair from both teams and unfortunately for Boyup there can be only one winner, but they can be proud of their efforts in the GF and throughout the season.
Congratulations to Forestry Cricket Club on a hard fought victory
