Rountable 1: Epistemic Empathy — AUC Podcast Network 28/10/2020

We are excited to introduce the first episode of our new series that takes the form of roundtables. These roundtables address the role of race in academic institutions and knowledge production, specifically at our very own Amsterdam University College. Our roundtables are not debates, but spaces of dialogue for students and professors to come together to discuss how to have productive conversations about race in the classroom. Our first episode ‘Epistemic Empathy’ addresses decolonising the curriculum and asks us to examine who the classroom’s ‘we’ is, what that position affords ‘us’, as well as interpersonal racism in the classroom.

A big thank you to our guests - Dr. Michael Onyebuchi Eze, Dr. Alexandra Brown, Luna van Crevel, Nada Elbohi, and Damini Jaiman.

Looking for new team members!

We're back after a brief summer break and are looking for new members to join our existing team. We are seeking producers, editors, artists, and PR people.

Producers will be helping create, manage, and host podcasts. Editors will edit and sound engineer podcasts. Artists will create cover art and promotional art in any medium they prefer. And PR people will be part of managing the website and page.

All of these categories are fairly flexible, and while previous experience is helpful, we see the APN as an avenue to learn and take part in the different aspects of podcast creation from beginning to end. The time commitment ranges from anywhere between 2-7 hours a week depending on availability. All we ask is that each person decides and respects the amount of time they choose to spend working with us.

Our podcasts can be found on Soundcloud: soundcloud.com/aucpodcastnetwork

And on our website:

Apply on this form and we'll email you to arrange a time to meet over Zoom: https://forms.gle/DGVp6G8mahqvH6Z99

Voices in the Kitchen — AUC Podcast Network 22/07/2020

In our new show, Voices in the Kitchen, we take a look at food and memory. Food subtly shapes our lives, and what we eat is a direct result of the society we live in, the families we were born into, and our own tastes. Each episode features guests telling us stories about cooking and eating and the people they look to cook for and eat with. In the first two episodes, we speak to Arti and Manju about intergenerational recipes, gender roles, and the cultural capital of a round-round roti.

We have three forms for you all to take a look at!

Since graduating looks a little different this year, it is harder to gather and reminisce about your university experience. We are setting up a time capsule of sorts in which you can talk about memories from your time at AUC and in Amsterdam.
Link to the Class of 2020 Retrospective Sign-Up Form: https://forms.gle/7KKkFEp6uwfw4ZBJ8

On a related note: After a long semester of writing at home, the class of 2020 should have a place to share all their hard work. We want to create an audio repository for the capstones of this graduating class. You can choose to send us a short summary of your capstone or to speak about it at length with one of our hosts.

APN Recommends 04/06/2020

Dear AUC community and beyond,

We would like to take the time to express our sorrow and anger regarding the murder of George Floyd, David McAtee, Tony McDade, and countless others. We would also like to express our solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement and global protests fighting police brutality, systemic racism, and all other interwoven systems of oppression.

We do not believe it is right to continue posting our usual content at this time and have therefore decided to suspend our content for the coming week. Instead we would like to ask our audience to actively pay attention to the current moment, educate themselves and one another, and to support and amplify the voices of the Black community. Podcasts are a wonderful medium of education. We are therefore providing our student body and extended audience with a list of podcasts that we have compiled that do not solely discuss systemic racism, but are also hosted by Black content creators.

The following is our list of recommendations. We would ask you to take the time to use these resources and to actively listen to them. Furthermore, we would like to invite you all to share any other resources that we may have missed (we are sure there is plenty we have yet to come across) that you would like to draw attention to and disseminate amongst ourselves. Please feel free to add your recommendations in this document. Please remain respectful.

With love and in solidarity,

AUC Podcast Network
