There are so many beautiful places to indulge in nature around Brisbane, and our hiking tokinos made the most out of their uni holidays to explore, explore, explore! 🥾 also love the extra effort they took to have an exquisite bbq session in the middle of the forest 😆🥓🌭

Rock hopping toki @ a hidden gem in Samford Valley just ~ 30 minutes outside of Brisbane CBD ⛰️🍃🥾
It was a bit too nippy for a dip in the water holes, but the waterfall was flowing beautifully and the company was stellar 🥰

At toki, our mission is to make social connection spontaneously accessible, because we believe that social connection is at the heart of our well-being ❤️🧠
This month, we are partnering with to complete The Push-up Challenge to raise awareness of mental health issues and break the stigma around it 💪🏻
A group of 21 tokinos have joined Team toki x HaBS and we will be sharing little moments of social connection across 23 days via smashing out 3,144 push-ups together. The number of push-ups is in acknowledgement of the lives lost to su***de in Australia in 2021.

The toki lounge is now opened from 10am - 3pm on each day (Mon - Fri) of SWOTVAC where UQ students can support each other through their studies 🤩📚

The West End river walk is a classic for both furry and less-furry locals 🚶♀️🐕 Having a picnic while enjoying live music @ the River Quay Green in South Bank is one of the most relaxing ways to spend a Sunday afternoon 🎹🎷 And look at those gorgeous fairy lights at Mowbray Park!!! 🧚♂️✨

Transitioning into uni life is a lot 😮💨
When we go through life transitions, we experience big shifts in our sense of identity. This often disrupts our social connections and leaves us with feelings of loneliness.
… and that’s why we are trialling the concept of ‘toki @ UQ’. We want to help support the beautiful students at The University of Queensland navigate their transition into uni by empowering them to find little nuggets of social connections in their everyday lives 💪🏻❤️

👋 Meet the brand (Part 2): Where does the toki colour palette come from? 🎨
Our colour palette is inspired by the Japanese tea ceremony, which has the proverb "ichigo ichie" (translation: one time, one encounter) as a core philosophy 🍵
The concept of "ichigo ichie" is all about embracing each moment as a once in a lifetime occasion that will never happen again in the same way. With this philosophy in mind, we can be more present, live each moment with mindfulness, and cherish each encounter without worries or expectations 🧘♀️ This is the philosophy that's also at the heart of 'toki', so that's why we wanted the beautiful colours from the Japanese tea ceremony to represent what we're all about 👩🎨

To celebrate "Dating Sundae" (i.e., day of the year when most people are active on dating apps), we wanted to see if anyone who said they are interested in teh concept of 'toki' would come out to toki with us 🍨 A BIG SHOUT OUT TO TIM who helped make happen our first ever official toki!!! 🥳
Thank you also to the 15 other wonderful people who reached out to chat with us on the beautiful grassy fields + my UQ Ventures ilab accelerator mates who came out for moral support 💪

🚨 FIRST EVER TOKI ALERT!!! 🚨
Did you know that tomorrow is called “Dating Sunday”, because it’s the day of the year when people are most active on dating apps? 👀
To celebrate all this NEW YEAR NEW PEOPLE energy, why not pause that swiping for a bit and come toki with us out in South Bank to meet new people in real life!? 🤩 Because we love dad jokes, we’ve decided to call our toki “Dating Sundae 🍨” and we pledge to eat as many icecreams as we can throughout the day with you 😆

👋 Meet the brand (Part 1): Why are we called 'toki'? 🤔
The word 'toki' in Japanese means "a moment in time". We've also adapted 'toki' into a verb to represent the act of sharing a moment in time with someone (e.g., "wanna toki?" = "wanna share a moment together?").
We are designing an app that empowers you to spontaneously share the experience of doing what you feel like doing in the moment with new others. So that's why we thought 'toki' would be a perfect name for us 😊
In the coming weeks, we plan to spontaneously post invites here for us to toki together doing random things in random places around Brisbane... so, we're looking forward to hearing you say, "Let's toki!" 🕺🍧🎨
Thank you to the 42 amazing and brave people who came to chat with us about their experiences of meeting new people 🥲
We learned many things about human connection like…
📱 The Gen Z are super bold (!!!) about their use of social media to connect with random others
🎒 The hostel/backpacker culture is still alive and well post-pandemic
👶🏻 It’s tricky to make friends as new parents, but even trickier to maintain those friendships as the kids grow up
🧶 The beautiful Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders people’ culture of yarning circles
We were also reminded of the courage it takes to move to new cities/countries, and how a little bit of love can go a long way to support people who are far away from their loved ones 🥰
We want to make ‘toki’ something that will make a true difference in your lives, so anything and everything you share with us we value so much. We will keep these things in mind as we move forward in our journey to developing the app 💪🏻
