We will always recommend and create novel studies for books with diverse representation! Our most recent novel study released features a trans main character, Too Bright to See by Kyle Lukoff.

Currently our young people spend 6+ hours a day at school. During this time, our children are learning to navigate the world in those schools and deserve representation in their classrooms and in their school libraries.

Unfortunately, as with everything trans related, access to affirming and confirming representation is under attack in the USA. There are groups of people who are lobbying for the complete removal of all LGBTQ+ books for children under 12 and a heavy restriction for everyone else. This is tragic for our youngest kids who often want to see themselves in the books they read. They also want to share stories of people like them with their friends! These book bans don't allow for that any longer.

Not only are books under attack, but in several states there are bans completely on people discussing LGBTQ+ issues with anyone in a classroom setting. This prevents teachers who are LGBTQ+ from having pictures of their families in their classrooms if they are in same s*x relationships. This prevents kids from talking to their teacher, and classmates, about their families if they happen to have same s*x parents. This also prevents teachers from talking about inclusive topics to help LGBTQ+ students feel like they have a place in the classroom. This others our kids, and it is dangerous.

We know through research that children do best in classrooms where they are represented in the materials handed out. This transcends gender and applies to all things, such as race, nationality, and ability. We know kids do better when they can see themselves in their lessons. We know children who are exposed to diversity at an early age, and consistently see others who may not be exactly like themselves, are better rounded students and more empathetic humans.

It's important we continue to have accurate and affirming representation of all people in our classrooms and our libraries. This includes our youngest Trans community members.

Call to action: Make sure you let your local libraries and schools know you support the steps they take to keep the classrooms inclusive for ALL students, including the trans kids.

Why use novel studies to teach writing? 06/11/2022

LitHouse Learning Novel Studies focus on writing and analysis skills, but why should we use literature to teach kids how to write academically?

Why use novel studies to teach writing? When I read The Writing Revolution, I knew I wanted to use the methods outlined in the book to teach academic writing to my own kids. These methods work well with core content subjects like history and science, but I knew they could be a great addition to studying literature. Reading books with kids...

The Birchbark House Novel Study 03/11/2022

This level 2 novel study for The Birchbark House is available at the perfect time to use it for Native American Heritage Month!

This is a beautiful story about an Ojibwe family in 1847. The story is told with episodic vignettes happening throughout a year in the lives of this family through the eyes of 7-year-old Omakayas. It's a wonderful look into the way the Ojibwe people lived during this time period.

Even though this novel is fun and interesting, it also deals with some heavy issues and loss, so it's best for ages 9 and up.
