Abbreviation for 𝗟𝗲𝘀𝗯𝗶𝗮𝗻, 𝗚𝗮𝘆, 𝗕𝗶𝘀𝗲𝘅𝘂𝗮𝗹, and 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿.

𝗟𝗚𝗕𝗧 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗹𝗲𝘀𝗯𝗶𝗮𝗻, 𝗴𝗮𝘆, 𝗯𝗶𝘀𝗲𝘅𝘂𝗮𝗹, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿.
- The initialism, and some of its frequent forms, have been in use since the 1990s as an umbrella word encompassing sexuality and gender identity.

The word LGBT is an abbreviation for the initialism LGB, which began to supplant the term homosexual (or gay and le***an) in reference to the larger LGBT population in the mid-to-late 1980s.

When transgender persons are excluded, the shorter term LGB is used instead of LGBT.

It can refer to anyone who is non-heterosexual or non-cisgender, rather than only le***an, gay, bisexual, or transgender persons.

To acknowledge this inclusivity, a common version, LGBTQ, adds the letter Q for people who identify as q***r or are questioning their sexual or gender identity.

𝗧𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲'𝘀 𝗮𝗹𝘀𝗼 𝗮 𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗰𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗰 𝗺𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗵 𝘄𝗵𝗶𝗰𝗵 𝗶𝘀 𝗱𝗲𝘃𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝗟𝗚𝗕𝗧𝗤𝗜𝗔+ 𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲.
- LGBT Pride Month is a month dedicated to celebrating and commemorating le***an, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) pride, usually in June. After the Stonewall riots, a series of homosexual freedom rallies in 1969, Pride Month was born. Modern-day Pride Month highlights the LGBT rights struggle as well as LGBT culture.

𝗟𝗚𝗕𝗧𝗤 𝗥𝗲𝗽𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗶𝗻 𝗺𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗮
- Some LGBTQ+ characters and storylines have historically, and continue to be, reduced to negative stereotypes. They are classified based on their looks, behavior, or the challenges they experience.

The tokenization of LGBTQ+ characters is one concern. Instead of displaying distinct tales and characters as valuable as heterosexual ones, they are incorporated as a final consideration into storylines.

This may also translate into narratives in which the LGBTQ+ characters are rarely the protagonists. When children and young people watch media that solely presents one sort of hero, it can negatively influence their ideas of themselves.

Fortunately, more shows are putting the spotlight on the lives of LGBTQ+ people.

𝗟𝗚𝗕𝗧 𝗱𝗶𝘀𝗰𝗿𝗶𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗲𝘁
- According to a recent GLAAD analysis, the biggest social media platforms – Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, TikTok, and Twitter – are all "effectively hazardous for LGBTQ users."

"Of special concern, the prevalence and intensity of hate speech and harassment stands out as the most significant problem in urgent need of improvement," the nonprofit dedicated to preventing LGBTQ discrimination stated in its inaugural social media index study.

Sixty-four percent of LGBTQ social media users reported harassment and hate speech, far outnumbering all other identification categories.

Facebook users were subjected to the greatest amount of online abuse.

Approximately 75% of those who experienced online abuse said at least part of it happened on Facebook.

On Twitter (24%), YouTube (21%), Instagram (24%), and TikTok (9%), a smaller proportion encountered abuse or hatred.

𝗛𝗲𝗿𝗲'𝘀 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗱𝗼 𝘁𝗼 𝗵𝗲𝗹𝗽 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘀𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗟𝗚𝗕𝗧𝗤𝗜𝗔+ 𝗣𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲:
‐ Start by treating them equally.
‐ Don't make assumptions about people’s sexual orientation or gender identity.
‐ Speak out against homophobia, transphobia and anti-LGBTQ harassment and discrimination.
‐ Stand up for your LGBTQ friends, and voice your support for their being treated with respect and acceptance.
‐ Speak out against the use of anti-gay slurs.
‐ Be supportive of anyone who chooses to come out.
‐ Read, learn about and discuss LGBTQ issues and the rights of LGBTQ people.
