We at Dechmont Woods are puzzled. The McPherson Tape purports to be an early found footage film, about an alien abduction, released in 1983. Having watched the film, we are unsure of its provenance. There are no cars or buildings on display, and all the action takes place in near-darkness. If these are modern actors, they did a tremendous job of convincing us that they were living in 1983. The clothes, hairstyles, and the interiors are also exactly right.

And yet the title cards — white font on a black background — look incredibly like those of the Blair Witch Project. Did that film use TMT as a kind of template? I've never heard either director refer to this film, and they've been very thorough in citing their influences.

Our refusal to accept that it is no longer 1979 has made our discovery of this film problematic. We pride ourselves on being able to "call" idiomatic lapses in period pieces as ruthlessly as The Mystery Mob unmasked the real identity of the "ghost". But on the question of The McPherson Tape, we are flummoxed. IMDB, Wiki, and all other sources state that the film was released in 1983, but we harbour doubts. Why wouldn't the "hoax" extend to these pages?
