I took this photo when I stayed at a few years ago. When I made it pink I knew I had to make some creatures too.

We’re moving. Emotionally fragile please handle with care.

Moving and routine disruption with mental illness can be HARD and can often produce some confusion and “I can’t see it so I don’t get it” scenarios with people around you.

Things I’ve learned to be helpful:

🖤 Even though you’re moving keep as many things the same as possible. This could look like immediately setting up your nightstand in the same exact way you had it as soon as you land in your new spot.

🖤 Have your bed set up. You do not want to land in a place and add sleep disruption onto full life disruption.

🖤 Don’t spend time your energy explaining what you need in order to function to others during a transition. Notify your safe people before you move that this transition is coming and you will need their support and acknowledgment. A crisis plan is never a bad idea even if you’re not moving.

🖤 Get that therapy check-in set up. Moving right now wouldn’t be an option for me if I had to find a new therapist in the midst of the transition. Don’t add barriers to your care if you don’t have to. If you can, find a therapist you can check in with as soon as you get to your new space. This can be extremely hard living within the most horrible mental health care system ever especially with a job or insurance change but it. 👏🏼 Is. 👏🏼Critical. 👏🏼 (funds towards seeing someone without insurance for an intake while you get settled can be a part of your pre-move safety plan).

🖤 On that note, make sure your meds are freshly refilled as well, and you know where the pharmacy is. Find the grocery store, the laundry mat, the power outlets, the movie theater (yes fun things too) before you move. Minimize in transition problem solving.

🖤 Live as small and simply as possible so your very special beautiful brain can weather the change as best as possible. Set yourself up. Honor your needs, and know that if you give yourself what you need BEFORE you make the jump, you can follow your plan blindly and the dust will settle.
