On this date in 1916, former English actress Edna Loftus died of tuberculosis, alone, without money, friends, or family, in the City Hospital in San Francisco. She was saved from being buried in a pauper's grave by a brothel owner in the Tenderloin District. Her grave is in Cypress Lawn, Colma.
