April Fool
Finnish indie rock band, formed in the 90s. Now we're re-releasing our back catalogue over the next few months. Also unheard releases coming!
The year is closing to an end, so we wanted to look back and say a few words to thank all of you for your support.
When we started releasing our older EPs in April, the idea was to make them available for anyone who might’ve missed listening to them. We couldn’t have even dreamt about our songs finding a whole new audience, but now, 8 months later, they have been streamed thousands of times in over 40 countries. That is truly unbelievable.
Thank you everyone who’s taken time to listen to our songs this year, and we hope that you stick around next year too. We’re already planning our next release, and we can promise you that it’s going to surprise you in so many ways.
We wish you happy holidays, see you next year!
Like Caffeine Girl, Sketches has also been released on a compilation. It was a CD release with 37 other indie/underground bands, and a slightly more professional effort than the cassette with Caffeine Girl.
As a first release from a new label it didn't get much attention, and it seems that the label has also moved on to selling t-shirts since.
The compilation is probably difficult to find now, but the good thing is that you can now listen to Sketches on all streaming services!

New single Sketches is out on Friday. It was written on one sleepless winter night in Jyväskylä, after some disappointments in a relationship. It is a melancholic but edgy indie rock song with catchy melodies and a rollercoaster ride of emotions. The song was recorded on the same session as the new version of Caffeine Girl.
Do us a favour and pre-save the song!

A fun fact about Caffeine Girl: This version of the song was actually released on compilation cassette (!) back in 2000. It was an odd DIY tape that disappeared into obscurity as soon as it was released, and not more than a few people have ever seen.
It's not exaggerated to say that the number of streams the recent release of Caffeine Girl has received far exceeds the number of copies made of that cassette.
To top it all, the name of the song was
misspelled on the cover sleeve as
"Coffeine Girl". Not a great start for the
song, but finally it has received the
release it deserves!

This version of Caffeine Girl was recorded in 1999. For this session, we had a new drummer, Jari Lappalainen, take over the drums. Besides being a great guy, he's also a great drummer.
We'll also release another song from this session soon!

"Summer is here, summer is there, summer is every fu***ng where and I don't know if I like you anymore".
We have only one song about summer, it's called "Sunshine". It was included on our first demo, but not on any official release.
Have a merry summer, everyone! We'll take a little vacation from our social media channels for the rest of the month. See you in August!

Idiotic is an anthem for the minorities and outsiders. Have you ever heard idiotic comments about your unconventional looks or even about your gender or sexual identity? Then this one’s for you. Happy !
In the music you can definitely hear influences of the 90s Swedish indie sound, as Swedish bands were an essential part of the soundtrack of our 90s.
This video is adapted from our 1997 performance at Rantarock in Rantasalmi.
Caffeine Girl is the opening song of the Sky Blue Pink EP. It has some nice X-Files vibes in the chorus: ”She makes me nervous like hell, like alone in Roswell…”
Some years later, we recorded a new version of the song – we'll release that one on Spotify soon too.
In the 90s, Jussi Koivunoro directed a music video for Caffeine Girl, but the fate of the video is a case worthy of the X-Files in itself. We shot the video and it was completed, but no one has ever seen it. It seems to have vanished in thin air! Although rumor has it that the video still exists somewhere...
But we had fun filming it anyway! It was the first music video we made, and the last one we made in the 20th century.
The song Why Worry was written on the day after april fool had won a local band competition. The lyrics reflect the feeling when you’re young, a bit messed up and the future still looks dazzlingly bright.
Music-wise, the song is all about high energy combined with catchy melodies. Influences from Finnish punk pop and punk rock can also be heard on the track – some members of april fool also used to play in a hardcore punk band.
The wild trumpet and saxophone tracks were played by Olli Seväkivi and Mikko Kämäräinen.
Sky Blue Pink was the last recording by the original line-up: Sami Hurmerinta (guitar), Ilkka Mikkola (vocals & guitar), Sampo Karjalainen (drums) and Marko Hurmerinta (bass).
Sadly, after that Sampo moved on to pursue greater things.

Our second EP Sky Blue Pink is out soon on Spotify and other streaming platforms. Stay tuned!
Abandoned was recorded in Pekka Koivunoro’s Studionoro, a small, atmospheric studio in Rantasalmi. It was our second visit there (the very first demo was never published). We were very excited and most importantly, ate lots of Karelian pies with smoked cheese. Thanks to Pekka and his whole family, who welcomed us warmly.
And since we started thanking people, now is a good time to thank other kind souls who offered us their time and effort back then:
Jussi Koivunoro took photos (this one included), Toni Auvinen used to be a roadie on gigs, Manu Tuppurainen played us on the radio. Popsicle and Poverty Stinks gave us inspiration.
Thank you!
In the 90’s German radio station Offener Kanal Westküste used to play our song Less You Talk. Artist Tim Eckhorst heard it and contacted us. This picture is artwork for Tim’s and Jannes Nowak’s book Hausdurchsuchung (2009), we were included on the book’s soundtrack-CD.
Since then Tim has for example made an album-cover for Scorpions and artwork for the Wacken Open Air festival.
Some day we'll commission artwork for a new release from Tim!
