Our insectivorous bats provide a huge ecological service.
๐ฆ70% of all bats are insectivorous
๐ฆ2023 North American State of the Bats Report Indicates that 52% of Bat Species Across the Continent are at Risk of Severe Population Decline
๐ฆThe other top threats to bats in North America include habitat loss, the bat disease white-nose syndrome (WNS), and mortality from wind turbines.
๐ฆPeople working together, from government agencies to bat enthusiasts, are important players to ensure bats have the attention and protections they need to survive and prosper.
๐ฆExperts believe that as many as 82% of bat species in North America will be impacted by climate change in the next 15 years, especially by severe drought and temperature extremes.
๐ฆBats are diverse and beneficial. Bats provide economic benefits to agriculture by consuming insect pests, improving crop yields, and reducing pesticide use.
๐ฆBats contribute to forest health, and nectar-feeding bats pollinate plants.
Bats face many challenges today and the conservation landscape is increasingly complex. Together we are striving to create a healthy environment for bats through education, and conservation efforts. Our rehabilitation efforts give hundreds of bats a second chance at flying free each year. We provide sanctuary for those that cannot be released and illustrating how bats are not ugly, vial creatures but instead amazing at their ecological roles, intelligent, gentle and capable of complex social interactions.
Please above all this Bat Appreciation Month, help your local bats. Create sustainable bat habitat, educate others and support bay organizations in your area and throughout the world.
Happy Bat Appreciation month to our favorite mammal ๐ฆ๐ฆ

: Cecropia moths are the largest moths in North America with a wingspan of 5 to 7 inches! While many moth species are important pollinators that feed on the nectar of nocturnal plants, adult Cecropia moths actually lack working mouth parts and digestive systems and live only two weeks for the sole purpose of finding a mate and laying eggs.
Even though Cecropia moths aren't pollinators, planting native host trees and plants in your green spaces not only supports this captivating species, but also supports local biodiversity as a whole. By planting trees that support a variety of different insects, including moths, you are also supporting animals that rely on those insects and moths for food, such as birds! A majority of terrestrial birds feed their young with caterpillars that feed on tree foliage, with most of these caterpillars being moth larvae.
Moths are often underappreciated in comparison to other insects, but they are fun to observe because of their amazing diversity, many species are important pollinators of native plants, and they are a crucial food source that other animals depend on for survival. Here's to the moths and all that they do! Happy Moth Week everyone!
We hope everyone had a great ! Check out the Light Pollution Hurts Pollinators brochure created by the NAPPC Lepidoptera Task Force. Learn more about the importance of nocturnal pollinators, such as moths, and how nighttime light pollution is an increasing problem worldwide to important pollinator populations.
We also have a repurposable letter that can be downloaded and sent to your HOA official or elected official about decreasing light pollution to benefit nocturnal pollinators like moths and bats.
Download these resources and learn more about moths and light pollution by visiting the NAPPC Lepidoptera Task Force page on our website at https://www.pollinator.org/lepidoptera.

It's National Pollinator Week! Did you know that pollination of plants by bees is responsible for one out of every three bites we eat?! Coneflower (Echinacea purpurea), goldenrod (Solidago), butterfly w**d (Asclepias tuberosa), blazing star (Liatris spicata) and brown-eyed Susan (Rubekia) are just a few examples of plants you can grow in your garden or backyard to attract bees and butterflies.
