During the weekend, Commissioner for Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Management, Christos Stylianides, visited Belgrade, Serbia, to discuss EU humanitarian support for refugees in the country.

"Vulnerable refugees, including young children, are still in need of assistance. We can't leave them to face the harsh winter conditions alone. We are stepping up our humanitarian assistance in Serbia bringing it to a total of €20 million," said Commissioner Stylianides.

The recent earthquake has devastated areas of Turkey and Syria, and the extreme cold has made rescue efforts particularly challenging. I have traveled through the region and visited refugee camps on both the Turkish and Syrian sides of the border.

Update on the EU-coordinated response to 🔥 in the Mediterranean:

Greece 🇬🇷: 10 countries are sending help (Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, France, Italy, Malta, Poland, Romania, Slovakia and Serbia). In total, over 490 firefighters 🧑‍🚒 and 7 planes 🛩️ have been deployed to different areas of the country.

Tunisia 🇹🇳: 2 planes from the rescEU reserve hosted by Spain are on their way to the northwest of the country.

The EU Civil Protection Mechanism shows once again that it is a key instrument of solidarity and cooperation among EU Member States and beyond during emergencies.

Wildfires: EU provides crucial assistance to Mediterranean region As several countries grapple with rapidly spreading wildfires, the EU steps in to reinforce firefighting efforts and provide much-needed support to the affected communities with over 490 firefighters and 9 firefighting planes deployed to Greece and Tunisia since 18 July.
