Since mine shafts were small and had a low ceiling, it made sense to put smaller ponies into play here. At the height of Pit Pony usage in 1913, there were 70,000 working in the mines. As of 1984, there were 55 still in service. The last pony, Robbie, retired in 1999.
It is true that most of them were employed by the British and Australians, but they were employed in the US as well. Mr. Wikipedia says they weren’t, but I read several accounts of native pit ponies here in the US…

Trixy enjoying her first chiropractic treatment. Hoping this will help her feel some relief. Honestly, we have tried absolutely everything with the exception of chiropractic and acupuncture. Fingers crossed!! 🤞

Happy Trails Horse Rescue Providing services to keep horses from needing rescue in Central Oregon.

Never a dull moment at the rescue. Vet was out for a tooth extraction for Kody, which went better than expected. Next up was a kissing spine treatment we were going to try on Honey - but a slight swelling of her coronet rapidly turned into a swollen knee. Turns out she had a super deep wound (looked like a branch poke) that just missed her joint. That became a cellulitis urgent priority. She’s bandaged up and doing good so far. Please send healing thoughts her way! Bad enough to have kissing spine and now a deep wound to boot! Sigh…
