It’s about time I updated my profile photo.

I have been reluctant… all through my cancer journey, I wanted to believe I’d go back to being who I was before. I wanted to believe I could be that person again… my ginger hair… I miss that.

The truth is I’m *not* the same person.

Easter Sunday last year I found a lump on my left breast. After 10 days of tests/biopsy, I found out I had triple negative breast cancer stage 2 and it was growing fast.

I didn’t have time to worry. I had to be objective - start chemo and get this cancer out of my body.

Social media (stories) became my place for catharsis, getting it off my chest, getting the amazing support I needed from you while doing my best to show the *real* me, the real cancer stuffs… ups downs and arounds… (You can watch my *entire* journey on stories highlights)

After 4 months of chemo (with every side effect possible), an 11h-surgery (double mastectomy, a salpingo oophorectomy plus an immediate DIEP flap reconstruction), lots of recovering, an ED relapse, one month in rehab and the (still) lingering side effects… I am now on the other side.

I am in remission and yes, I have changed… and that is okay.

Having cancer is a life-changing experience and you re-evaluate lots of things.

I no longer tolerate s**t or stupidity. I now know who my real friends are, who stuck by me and I could/can count on. And the ones I culled out of my life.

I no longer feel the need to prove myself. I was trying so hard to be accepted… that was fuc*ing exhausting. (Yes I curse a lot more too - been told it’s a real side effect of cancer, no joke! 😂)

It’s supposed to be FUN and easy. Life is short and I will do what *I* want to do.

I’ve been a food technologist for 20 years and I have re-ignited this passion - well, the truth is I never left the food industry, I just never showed that part of me here. And that’s what lights me up, where I’m the expert, I recognise myself.

So I decided that’s what I’m showing you - the *real* me. The anti-diet culture part but also the food science geek. (Who am I kidding… I’m such a geek in everything😆)

And when I accept myself, others accept me too.

Thank you for being here.

Happy Valentine’s Day to my husband Daniel ()- married for 15 years and together for 17, vows renewed today ❤️

“In sickness and in health” has a special meaning to us now, so we said “I dough”.

Backstory - remember last year when you all (well, at least 50 of you!) tagged me on a competition at Krispy Kreme Australia]?? Yep - that was it, we got it! 🙌🏻🙏🏻

For the competition, I had to explain how KK impacted our life as a couple - and most of you know I “met” Krispy Kreme through Daniel the day we got together in London. If chosen, we would get married on Valentine’s Day - full on wedding by the way!

And there… we were chosen from hundreds of stories! I couldn’t believe it - then again, I could, because and 🙌🏻🙏🏻

Y’all know how much I love Krispy Kreme and how much it helped me last year throughout my chemotherapy, good days and bad days - so it was indeed very fitting for us!

Thank you everyone at Krispy Kreme Australia] - we had the best time and I am still “wonderstruck, blushing all the way home” (thank you for as the wedding song)

Have a wonderful day, everyone ❤️❤️

(More photos will come later, I just *had* to post today for V’s Day)

Thank you for watching and your messages of support ❤️

October is breast cancer awareness month 🎀

The BCNA estimates that 1 in 7 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime. Early detection is key and the best way to do that is to check your breasts.

Get to know your body so that if something is different or unusual, you immediately can tell and investigate. (It’s not always cancer by the way!) There’s so much treatment and the survival rates have increased dramatically, especially with early detection.

I caught it when it was Stage 2, and even though it was very aggressive (Grade 3), it had a cure.

There are several types of Breast Cancer and even if 2 people have the exact same type, their treatment might be different because their bodies are different and react differently.

I had Triple Negative Breast Cancer.

My doctor tells me that TNBC has no known specific physiological ‘trigger’, apart from a few known genetic mutations; in my case, it was due to a genetic mutation on the BRCA1 gene which predisposes the person to breast and ovarian cancer.

He also tells me TNBC is most likely all genetic, and if the person tests negative for one of the known genetic mutations, it’s likely because we haven’t discovered the gene yet.

Have you checked your breasts today?

Love,
Caroline

Ps.: Remembering that breast cancer does not discriminate and all genders can be affected by it.

“How are you feeling? (Really)”

I got this question on my ‘stories’ and I wanted to share my response here too, in the hopes of helping others and normalising these feelings.

SWIPE to read or read below!

-

I think I’m okay most days… Today I have some back and hip pain (trochanteric bursitis) and apparently can’t have tramadol because I am on antidepressants… plus as surgery comes closer, I get less okay. (Surgery is double mastectomy with DIEP flap reconstruction and oophorectomy, estimated 11h). I also have my pre-admission appointment on Monday.

I am feeling lots of anxiety about what my body will “look like” post surgery that I never thought I would feel (because I’m a dietitian and hypnotherapist working with eating disorders/body image who previously suffered from EDs as well). I truly thought I had worked past it… but there’s still stuff there to be dealt with. I’m nervous I’ll wake up and feel like Frankenstein. It’s weird, I know… but it’s how I feel and I don’t know how else to explain.

I am still having side effects from chemo lingering on which are not fun, especially fatigue - and I finished chemo 3.5 weeks ago and have been told these will linger on for months 🤔

I’m also feeling some apprehension towards the fact I believe I didn’t get “enough” chemo prior to surgery and I can still feel the lump there - my medical oncologist says it could be scar tissue or the clip. (Initial diagnosis was Triple Negative Breast Cancer, Stage 2, grade 2, 2.5cm left breast, Ki67 80%, BRCA1 mutation positive - “only” got 12 weeks taxol/carbo and the last 6 were at 50%, because of liver function!).

I was told by them that “surgery trumps chemo right now”, so I’m waiting to see what will happen after surgery. If my oncologist doesn’t want to give me the ”appropriate” chemo or at least oral chemo, I’ll find one who will - for my peace of mind and insurance policy. I have spoken with other doctors (and some friends who work in this field overseas) and they all agree with me on this.

Triple negative breast cancer is the most aggressive type of BC & needs to be treated as such - with a growth rate of 80%, it needs to be taken seriously.

- continues in comments!

**SAVE for LATER!** Do you sneak into the pantry after everyone’s in bed? ⁣Or maybe you don't trust yourself around a block of chocolate?

You’re not alone.

But what you might not realise is that ‘quitting’ your habits is about much more than the food itself.⁣ It’s not the chocolate or the chips or the ice-cream that are really the problem. In fact, your ‘bad habits’ around food have almost nothing to do with the food itself.

Question to ask yourself:
- Am I avoiding something by eating this food?
- What am I feeling right now?
- Do I want this food or the emotion attached to it?

Just these 3 will start your shift towards noticing WHY you eat in the first place.

Love,
Caroline

You da best, Em, love ya guts xx

Posted • Em 🌈 ED RECOVERY] HAPPY EASTER, MY HUNS! 🥰💐🐣🐰

This can be a really horrible and triggering time of year for us folk with eating disorders. In some ways, Easter has been harder for me than Christmas at times. BUT! We have to remember that we are deserving of enjoying ourselves and that eating yummy treats doesn’t make us bad people. 💘

Here are some little things to remember if your ED gets loud this weekend:

🍭 You are allowed to eat sweets, chocolate, biscuits, cakes, and allllll the sugary things without feeling guilty

🍬 There is NEVER anything to “make up for” or “work off” after Easter and you do not need to restrict come Tuesday

🍰 Your friends and family love you no matter what, regardless of your size or your food choices

🍧 Calories are not measurements of your worth as a human being

🐥 Being able to enjoy food at Easter doesn’t invalidate your ED or mean you made the whole thing up

🌸 You do not ever need to struggle alone - if this time of year is hard, please reach out

Have a safe and chocolate-filled day! ✨✨

16/04/2022

**Read for Easter TIPS!!** Happy Easter weekend ❤️ I know chocolate can be a huge trigger for many in recovery - especially binge and emotional overeaters - so I thought I’d help you out.

Before I go on, let me just say this - it’s ok. It’s ok to eat when you’re wanting some comfort. As long as you’re aware of what you’re doing and not beat yourself up about it afterwards.

So here are some tips to go about this Sunday:
- Make your food choices consciously. If you want a specific chocolate - eat it. Don’t just substitute it for a “lesser option” and then think about your ‘preferred option’ all day as this will quite possibly lead to a binge.

- Instead of mindLESS eating it, be present with your chocolate. Shutting down all distractions and be mindFULL and not mindless. It does not mean eat slower than a turtle, it means ‘just you and the chocolate’.

And last but not least - ENJOY every bite of that favorite treat ❤️

Focus on taking this healthy approach as opposed to restricting yourself and feeling like a failure later. Just a last note - You don’t fail diets. Diets fail you.

From my Jewish/catholic family to yours, Chag Sameach and hope you’re having a beautiful Easter ❤️

Love,
Caroline

Some days I love spending the whole day in my pyjamas and I feel amazing. Other days I love doing my hair and makeup and I feel just as great and it’s almost like an anchor for me to show up.

We all have those moments when we feel a little down or we don’t wake up in the best of moods. And an antidote to that for me is to think of it as a bad moment and not as a bad day.

And I change this on the spot by practicing some self-care.

Whether you’re having a nice bath, “Netflix and chilling”, walking at a park smelling the roses 🌹, going for a run, getting a massage or even going to the hairdresser for a touch up - find something that makes you feel cared for by yourself 💆‍♀️

And further from that, whenever you’re feeling a little down, act AS IF you’re feeling good. For example - start fake laughing. When you fake laugh, you actually end up laughing for real haha AND you also interrupt your own “pity party” pattern 🙄 (speaking from personal experience)

You could start by putting on some music and dancing - because yes, the fastest way to change your state is to change your focus and change your physiology (or singing out loud if you’re one of mine!) 😂

What is your favorite self-care practice? Pop in the comments!

Love,
Caroline

When you allow your children to grow up around so-called “naughty” foods, they learn they are nothing to be fearful of, they learn to see them as just “foods” - or at school they teach them as ‘sometimes’ foods.

On the other hand, I know from experience (my husband) that sometimes when you grow up thinking these foods are “not allowed”, you go off to university, you’re free for the first time in your life to eat it, so you binge and end up the most unhealthy you’ve ever been.

I keep candy (and any other food) around the house and we have dessert when we feel like it. My kids are taught to listen to their bodies, celebrate their wins and they are happy 😃

Raising intuitive eaters is my way of giving them the best start to their relationship with food.

When you first let go of the diet mentality, it can feel quite strange - just like any change in habits.

We are conditioned to think there are set times to eat and that dieting is the only way to be healthy. I bet if you need to go to the toilet, you won’t look at your watch and say “oh it’s not time to p*e yet! I have to wait til p*e time”.

So if you laugh at that, how come you feel like you have to suppress your hunger and wait til lunch time or an acceptable time (by society) to eat?

How about we try something new? I bet you’d try another diet if I told you it would work!

How about we eat when we are hungry?? How can we tell? Ask your body - what emotion am I feeling right now? Am I hungry or am I craving?

Cravings are psychological, hunger is physiological. Ask yourself “am I facing my stuff or stuffing my face?”

And yes, listening to our bodies can feel a little foreign at first. You get better with practice, it gets easier.

And trust me when I tell you - you will feel so free... being able to actually choose what you want and eating moderately, choosing health but also choosing treats here and there - for the right reasons!

Give it a try and let me know in the comments!

Love,
Caroline 💕

Analyze the intention behind your eating decisions, not the food choice itself.

My tip here is to start by being aware of how you feel before, during and after eating. Get curious! ⁣

Now answer this:
- Did you choose a particular food to ‘fix’ what you felt before eating?⁣
- If you ate whatever you wanted, did you experience guilt afterwards? ⁣
- Or did you feel the same throughout the process?

Being absolutely vulnerable and honest here, for me, it’s always been ‘smaller abs’ and ‘no double chin’ 😳🙄

Thank you LAINEY] for the illustration and Alex Light🕊] for the post ❤️

Reposted • Alex Light🕊] I think about this a lot… About how the grass is always greener.

How many times have you thought ‘I wish I had her [insert body part here]’?⁣

For me, it was always ‘thin legs’ or ‘thin arms’… What about you?

But here’s the thing - we always want something we don’t have… And then when we get it, we want something else. Forever chasing this elusive sense of contentment that we believe we will find if we manage to get the ‘perfect’ body. But the goalposts shift, and we end up having to shoot for another goal, and the cycle never ends… ⁣

Because it’s an illusion. The idea that ‘I will be happy if…’ is a slippery slope that leads us to dark and depressing places because we simply cannot ever get there. We might feel brief euphoria when we achieve something, but that passes, and then we desperately begin the hunt for something else that isn’t within our reach.⁣

Happiness lies in the right here, right now. In what we’ve got right here, right now. Happiness is not in the future, it’s something we need to cultivate in the present. ⁣

That means accepting our present body, in the form it exists in right now. ⁣
No ‘oh but I would be so much happier if I had…’ - it’s not a productive exercise and it ends up taking up precious headspace that prevents us from truly living in in the moment. ⁣

Just my two cents. What do you think - does this resonate? ⁣
