Places to explore in Seychelles

The Carnivorous plant of the Copolia Trail

Many people hike the Copolia trail and for varied reasons. Some do it to exercise, others for the magnificent view, others still, to explore nature. One of the trail's many attribute is the Pitcher plant (Nepenthes pervelli).
Once you reach the summit located on the flat giant inselberg, before searching for the view you will come across these beauties. They live there on the dry glacis and with their bright colour, they are hard to miss. The Pitcher plant or ‘Lalyann Potao’ it is called in creole is endemic to the Seychelles. The insect-eating plant is only found on two of Seychelles’ main islands and these are Mahe and Silhouette. The carnivorous plant traps visiting insects inside its pitcher and digest them using enzymes. This bizarre feeding mechanism allows the plant to thrive in nutrient deficient soil similar to that at the top of the trail.

Another reason why you should visit Seychelles’ most popular trail, to come observe the carnivorous Pitcher Plant!

Problems unique to island life!

Another day stranded on Aride Island. For the past few weeks, the ICS team have refrained from travelling to by boat due to the persisting rough sea condition. On days like this even the best boatman does not dare defy nature.
