Been lazy about posting...sorry! Summer is here though! Ulakta Head with Wild Bill, Barry, and Andy. Will work on the highlight reel. Some fun nudibranchs. This was Plan B after visibility didn't look so good to start exploring and mapping the reef at the north end of Hog Island.

12 February 2022 - Uknadax (Hog Island) Dive, week 2
Three weekends in a row for boat diving in Unalaska in Jan/Feb! We can't believe it. We continued the exploration of the Bering Sea aquarium with another section of the west side of Hog Island. We saw the surface from 45' down, with nominal visibility 25-30' for most of the dive. Found another house sized rock, got a visit by a sea lion, and a rout of whelks munching on a sea nettle. Captain Jenny dive-tended this week and William Bmalpass (video) and Andy Dietrick were in the water.
6 February 2022 - Uknadax (Hog Island) Dive
Lucked out on another boat diving opportunity with a fine weekend of weather. William Bmalpass, Jenny, Andy, and puppy Frida this week. Dove on the west side. 20-30’ of viz. Light swell. One video in the comments.

Weather finally cooperated for a weekend boat dive. Always nice to get out in the main body of Unalaska Bay. There were 3 GoPro’s going today so this is just a teaser. Video reel comin. Pics are from all of us. Crew was Mary, Jenny, Riley, William Bmalpass, and Andy.
Notes: Had to push a little ice outbound…diminishing swell from North but pleasant underwater…water temp 36F…viz 20-30’…nice to have boat operator support so the divers can just enjoy a point to point and come up when they are ready.

Divers: Andy & Jenny
Visibility nowhere near last weekend. Processing season has begun. Viz 5-7' down to about 40' depth then 10-15'. And we forgot to take any pics. :)

For the UDA ‘dive-log’, Josh was always good at marking it down on the calendar in the dive cave (Josh, we saved them all btw) and Mary always captures at least one pic. With our location transition it has seemed like succumbing to Facebook makes sense for the historical record. One pic only today. 🙂 Viz was great. Octopus and sea lions, check.

The winter visibility before A-Season processing starts is usually pretty good and lately it has been superb. The critter diving along the road from Westward to Pyramid Creek doesn’t disappoint. Nudibranchs to sea lions and everything in between. Make sure to practice sure footing with 100 pounds of dive gear on! 👍🏽🧜🏼♀️🐟🐙🦀🦭🌨⚓️

Final move out of the Dive Cave today…the compressor.
So we started the sad phase-out of the Dive Cave in late 2020 when Roger and Billie Jo moved off-island. Boooo. On Valentines Day 2021 we had a big gear move and split it up amongst the members for storage. Today we moved the final piece and heart and soul of a dive club, the compressor.
Good news is we’re still blowing bubbles and having fun underwater. We got a temporary home for now. 👍🏽 We’re on the hunt for a warm and dry space with a 220v plug for the compressor…a fresh water hose hook up would be an added bonus.

UDA has been quite active this interim between B-Season and upcoming A-Season despite a bunch of turnover. No underwater photos for you in this post, but we do want to document crystal clear vision of waves on the surface today from 75’ at the Deadman’s Curve dive site on Captains Bay Road! Nudibranchs, ctenophores, rock fish, a halibut, sea lions, eels, sea cumbers, and dozens of other fun looks today in some crystal clear Bering Sea water.

November 25, 2021. Annual UDA Thanksgiving morning dive and brunch. Plenty of turnover in the group the past 18 months and several members off on travel, but dang if it wasn’t the most magical Thanksgiving morning in years. Light winds, fat snowflakes falling straight down, and a pink sunrise, wispy clouds, and blue sky.
UDA’s annual underwater pumpkin carving was another success! Another cold windy year braved by a few hearty divers to make it happen. Riley Spetz William Bmalpass
Spring jam sesh, air test, and WHOA, we need to hydro! Getting ready for summer. Prepping a batch to ship to Kodiak for hydro testing. Gotta keep our fleet of tanks tip top. 👍🏽🧐🌊🏊🏽♂️🛥⚓️
One of our long time Unalaska Divers Association members, former board president, and local Aleutian-Pribilof Islands Marine Advisory Program agent Melissa Deiman Good held another year of the Dockside Discovery program today...Covid-19 live-stream-style. They had KUCB on scene filming the live stream provided by Optimera Inc, with the Unalaska Learning Center firing off live questions and Ms. Heimes and Mr. Spetz from Eagle's View Elementary suited up and diving to the bottom of the ocean. Right on crew! It's spring!
March 1, 2020 - Simon and Andy filled some tanks this morning and then went for a treasure dive. We’ve fully transitioned to the new compressor at this point. Same make and model as UDA’s first compressor - Alkin W32. She looks great in the dive cave.
Members Barry M., Roger D., and Andy D. got out for a Ulakta Head boat dive in the M/V Miss Pearl on on Sun. 12/8/2019. Curious and patient Octopus sittin' on a rock indulged them and the GoPro’s for quite some time. Anchored in 25’ and could easily see bottom. Vis felt like 100’ but probably 35’-40’.
