Three guys. Two bands. „The Silvertones VS. Tanzkapelle Specht“ features German Rockabillys splitting theirselves on one EP

Does anyone have a flagellum at hand? We have February 2021 and I still got some releases from 2020 I really need to review and recommend. For example there’s the split 10‘‘ by THE SILVERTONES and TANZKAPELLE SPECHT (Dance Band Cap Woodpecker) simply called „The Silvertones Vs. Tanzkapelle Specht“ (Plan 9 Trash Records). A shiny example for musical schizophrenia, as both three pieces are the same concerning the line-up. And both sides of the musicians’ personality lead to great recordings of the same quality – if you are into rockabilly and open minded enough to take some of the German rock’nroll tradition. But lets start with the A-Side of this EP and THE SILVERTONES.

The band from Wolfenbüttel in the north of Germany doesn’t hestitate to bring on heartfelt rockabilly with the self penned „Hi Voltage“ that features tasty guitar work, a powerful slappin’bass and hard hitting snare drum while remaining a relaxed track for the moments in life where you need some extra audio-energy to get along. This is a perfect introduction, followed by „If You Think I Don’t Need You“, that was featured by ELVIS in his movie „Viva Las Vegas“ back in 1963. The cool thing is, that this interpretation fits in between the original SILVERTONES-stuff like the opener or the vivid „Cry Me A River“. Or „Creature“ that sounds exactly like one of the old gemns Quentin Tarantino chose for some of his soundtracks. I would have bet, this is an original. What a great melancholic and atmospheric number. The silvertoned version of „Ubangi Stomp“ by the STRAY CATS that closes the A-side isn’t any worse. It sounds a bit more light hearted and is slightly faster paced. The guys do not even try to sound like the original in any way, which is good. The well known track melts into the SILVERTONES-universe, where classics and classy self penned compositions become one.

As we know, all things have two sides. In this case, turning over to the B-Side means turning towards 50s Rock’n’Roll in Germany which includes facing the alliance between German Schlager and rockin’ influences as in „Susi Baby“ aka „Susi Rock“ that was recorded by Peter Kraus in 1957 or „So geht das jede Nacht“ (This happens every night“) by young Freddy Quinn who went to the Eurovision Song Contest in 1956 with this number. The way Tanzkapelle Specht interpret this self ironic, yet devoted side of things is as elegant as it is entertaining. While showing respect to the attempts of early German rock’n’roll artists, they manage to include a twinkle in their eyes. Plus they make the songs sound more like rockabilly. Moreover the three piece manages to smuggle their self penned „Tamara“ among the tracks. A song that matches with the 50s originals completely.

Ten songs on two sides of a 10‘‘… All top quality. This is a must have, at least for all those who can relate to German rock’n’roll history. I’d go as far as saying: For all you out there who dig the variety of rockabilly-related sound performed in an outstanding tight and at the same time fleet-footed way.

Drei Musiker. Zwei Bands. „The Silvertones VS. Tanzkapelle Specht“ präsentiert Rockabillys aus Wolfenbüttel beim Split mit sich selbst

Hat jemand eine Geißel zur Hand? Es ist Februar 2021 und ich habe immer noch einige Veröffentlichungen von 2020 hier liegen, die ich unbedingt besprechen und empfehlen muss. So gibt es etwa die Split 10‘‘ von THE SILVERTONES und TANZKAPELLE SPECHT, die schlicht „The Silvertones Vs. Tanzkapelle Specht“ heißt und auf Plan 9 Trash Records erschienen ist. Ein glänzendes Beispiel für musikalische Schizophrenie, da beide Trios, wie bereits in der Überschrift angedeutet, hinsichtlich der Besetzung identisch sind. Und beide Seiten der Musikerpersönlichkeiten führen zu ähnlich großartigen Aufnahmen. Spielerisch ist jeder Track mitreißend, sofern Ihr Rockabilly mögt, aber auch offen genug seid, um einen Teil der deutschen Rock'n’roll-Tradition mit einzugemeinden.

Fangen wir mit der A-Seite der EP und den SILVERTONES an: Die Band aus Wolfenbüttel fackelt nicht lange, sondern liefert mit dem Opener „Hi Voltage“, der aus eigener Feder stammt, geschmackvolle Gitarrenarbeit, einen kraftvollen Slappin`-Bass und eine hart und präzise vertrimmte Snare-Drum. Musik zum Wohlfühlen also. Die Nummer liefert entspannte Energiezufuhr für jene Momente im Leben, in denen einem alles zu viel wird und man dringend etwas zusätzliche Audio-Energie benötigt oder auch als Begleiter für gute Laune. Auf diese perfekte Einstimmung folgt „If You Think I Don’t Need You“, das ELVIS 1963 in seinem Film „Viva Las Vegas“ zum Besten gab. Das Coole ist, dass diese Interpretation nahtlos zwischen die Originalkompositionen der SILVERTONES passt, zu denen der Opener, aber auch das lebhafte „Cry Me A River“ oder „Creature!“ zählen, das ziemlich genau so klingt, wie einer jener Schätze, die Quentin Tarantino für einige seiner Soundtracks ausgegraben hat. Ich hätte wetten können, dass , das Ding sei ein Original. Was für ein großartiger melancholischer und atmosphärischer Song. Die versilberte Version des „Ubangi Stomp“ der STRAY CATS, die die A-Seite abschließt, ist kein Deut schlechter. Sie klingt etwas unbeschwerter und ist etwas schneller als die Vorlage. Die Herren versuchen gar nicht erst, in irgendeiner Weise wie das Original zu klingen, was gut ist. Der bekannte Track verschmilzt mit dem SILVERTONES-Universum, in dem Klassiker und edle selbst verfasste Beiträge eins werden.

Bekanntlich hat alles zwei Seiten. In diesem Fall bedeutet der Wechsel auf die B-Seite, sich dem Rock'n'Roll der 50er Jahre in Deutschland zuzuwenden, wozu auch die Allianz zwischen deutschem Schlager und rockigen Einflüssen wie in „Susi Baby“ alias „Susi Rock“ gehört, das 1957 von Peter Kraus aufgenommen wurde. Oder wie wäre es mit „So geht das jede Nacht“, einem Erfolg des jungen Freddy Quinn, der 1956 mit diesem Lied zum Eurovision Song Contest ging. Die Art und Weise, wie Tanzkapelle Specht diese selbstironische, aber hingebungsvolle Seite der Dinge interpretiert, ist ebenso elegant wie unterhaltsam. Die Musiker zeigen Respekt vor den Versuchen der frühen deutschen Rock'n'Roll-Künstler, schaffen es aber, ein Augenzwinkern mit einzuschließen.

Außerdem klingen die Songs bei ihnen stärker nach Rockabilly. Auch schaffen es die Drei, ihre selbst verfasste „Tamara“ zwischen die Tracks zu schmuggeln. Einen Song, der voll und ganz zu den Originalen aus den 50er Jahren passt. Zehn Songs auf zwei Seiten einer 10‘‘… Alle von ausgesprochen hoher Qualität. Das ist ein Muss, zumindest für jeden, der sich auf die deutsche Rock'n'Roll-Geschichte einlassen kann. Ich würde sogar sagen: Für jeden da draußen, der die Vielfalt des Rockabilly-bezogenem Sound liebt und auf Musik steht, die außergewöhnlich tight, präzise und gleichzeitig leichtfüßig gespielt wird.

Silvertones V's Tanzkapelle Kappe Specht is a great new album of slap bass driven Rockabilly from Silvertones and Tanzkapelle Kappe Specht (which translated is Dance band cap woodpecker), which seems to be the Silvertones alter egos.
This crazy trio Blast their way through 10 tracks, some of which are well known rockabilly classics.

Review
Side A
The Silvertones: Tracks in English
1. Hi Voltage - Fist track of the A-side is just heaven with that Slap-Bass. The Guitar is on fire and the Drums are just a dream. Combined with great vocals. This is one of my favourites of this Cd.
2. If you think I Don`t Need You - Back to the old Elvis Presley movies. This is a well-executed cover. As far as covers go this is a good one.
3. Creature! - Cool down-tempo played track. These Creatures are playing so well, sounds like their full attention.
4. Cry Me A River - Ella Fitzgerald and Julie London would be proud and very impressed with the way the Boys turned a Jazz song into a Country-Western style Rock and Roll track.
5. Ubangi Stomp - This one everybody should know. It's a cover. Original written by Charles Underwood and first released 1956 by Warren Smith. But still the Boys kept it in their own style and not just a straight up cover.

Side B Tracks in German
Tanzkapelle Kappe Specht:
1. Susi Baby - The Boys used their own interpretation of Gene Vincent's Blue jean Bop and I think it's great. Nice steady played Drums with the help of a nice Slap-Bass to let the Guitar go mad.
2. Ich Bin Kein schöner Mann - Still leaning on the old Rock & Roll. They give it their all. Tanzkapelle Kappe Specht is mixing old R&R with their own style and to top it off they sing all the songs in German. Surprised? Me too but it fit’s.
3. Tamara - Great up-beat track which brings me back to the old German movies from the 50’s. The Guitar is just fantastic and with the help of the Slap-Bass and Drums this song sounds just right.
4. Alright - Nice clean kept Rock and Roll track. Slightly down-tempo but very harmonic. This could easily be a Doo-Wop song and you wouldn't know any different.
5. So Geht das Jede Nacht - Nice up-tempo track with a driving Slap-Bass and nice guitar riffs. Balanced out with an amazing played Drums.

Really slid modern rockabilly album your turn table is going to want.
