The Anchor
34 Park Street
Bankside
LONDON
SE1 9EF
A tavern, under various names, has been at this pub's location for over 800 years. The current incarnation was built in the early 1800s.
Being close to the original site of the Globe Theatre, it is not unsurprising that William Shakespeare was supposedly a regular at a previous incarnation of the pub.
The Anchor Bankside started life as the "brewery tap room" for the Anchor Brewery, which was first established in 1616. To the rear of the pub are buildings that were once operated by the Anchor Brewery. This quite large pub occupies a warren of rooms, passages, nooks and crannies and staircases right by the River Thames.
It is where diarist Samuel Pepys observed the Great Fire of London in 1666, writing that he took refuge here, where he watched the fire grow.
The Anchor tavern became a favourite haunt for smugglers and river pirates. During the course of repairs carried out in the early 19th century, a massive oak beam was removed, revealed ingeniously contrived hiding places, which were possibly used for the storage of contraband and stolen goods.
In the 1861 census, it was known as the Blue Anchor, 1 Bankside; this differentiated it from the Golden Anchor at 11 Park Street in the same census.

Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese
145 Fleet Street
LONDON
EC4A 2BP
A bobby stands outside of Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese, London, circa 1910. Source unknown.
Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese is a Grade II listed public house at 145 Fleet Street, on Wine Office Court, City of London. Rebuilt shortly after the Great Fire of 1666, there has been a pub at this location since 1538. The vaulted cellars are thought to belong to a 13th-century Carmelite monastery which once occupied the site.
The entrance to this pub is situated down a narrow alleyway and is unassuming, yet once inside visitors will realise that the pub occupies a lot of floor space and has numerous bars and gloomy rooms. In winter, open fireplaces are used to keep the interior warm. In the bar room are posted plaques showing famous people who were regulars. Some of the interior wood panelling is nineteenth century, some older, perhaps original.
The pub is known for its literary associations, with its regular patrons having included Charles Dickens, G.K. Chesterton and Mark Twain.
The pub is on the Campaign for Real Ale's National Inventory of Historic Pub Interiors.
The pub is owned by Tadcaster, Yorkshire based Samuel Smith's Brewery.
