Thunder & Reign

Two guys with a passion for wine who decided to turn a hobby into something more! Also, some short videos on our processes and our finished product.

On our page you will see updates about our plantations in Myers Flat, and soon to be at Sutton Grange.

Side by side, the first vintage and the current. Final filtration completed and transferred to another barrel for transportation. We are very excited for the bottling process tomorrow.

2022 and we’re on a mission to make another barrel of wine. We spent Saturday with a few people out at Shiraz republic and picked 500kg’s of Great quality Heathcote Shiraz. A big thanks to those who were able to come and help on the day. This year we have had the benefits of using an electric crusher and also we have been able to add some of our own grapes (a very small proportion) to the upgraded 500ltr vat.. Anyway we hope you enjoy this video and more to come soon. A notable absence this year was Mick who was tending an injury.

Cheers
Paul and Mick

We tried a little tank sample this afternoon of our “Maiden Squall Shiraz”, We are very happy with our first ever attempt of making wine. It’s now been on oak for around 11 months, we will leave it for another 4 months and then proceed to bottling. Colour, aromas and taste are all what we were hoping for 😃

Cheers from Mick and Paul 🍷 🍷

Great day out with the new vines with our chief inspector. Little Dot says they are coming along nicely, and they got the paw of approval 🐾🐾. 😁

It’s been a while since our last post, but as you will see we’ve been busy and we have expanded!!

Dormant has been our Thunder and Reign page as have our vines, until now…. We spent today conducting some vine Maintenance, clearing the excess grass to ensure our babies get all the nutrients possible, pruning back for spring growth, attaching to guide wires (before and after shot in video) and attaching the top (2) guide wires which we will split to a Y shape once the vines are high enough. Paul has completed a soil test (picture in video) and interesting to see the results; 53% sand for good drainage, 41% silt and 6% clay which is essential to keep some moisture within the soil. This will be our vines first full spring and can’t wait to see how they thrive with some decent weather of course. We hope you enjoyed this little update.

Cheers from Paul and Mick.

After much anticipation and uncertainty, we have today proudly bottled our first ever attempt at rosé. It needs to settle now for a few weeks post the final filtration and “bottle shock” however we think it’ll be a cracker!! Next vintage we’ll allocate a bit more juice so we can make more than 10 bottles… Watch the video below to see if you are our lucky winner of the free bottle as promised on our last video.

Looking forward to “The Maiden Squall” Shiraz which will be bottled next autumn, upon inspection today it’s deep in colour, rich and complex with terrific aromatics.

Cheers 🍷

The amazing moment we topped off a full barrel 😍😍

This is a few clips from our second round of grapes we picked. From crushing, fermenting, pressing and filtering. We also racked off 10 litres to make some rose as well. 😁

Just wanted to point this one out in particular hopefully you find it amusing 😁
Wait for the moment when Mick realises the over splash has just landed on my partner’s (Kiz’s) new white jumper she was wearing while filming this clip (yes bad choice when playing with red wine 🤦🏻‍♂️ 😂😂😂)
Enjoy 😁

Big shout out to Janet from Kitty Cat Cottage for generously letting us pick some of your grapes and re-home them and hopefully nurture them into something tasty 🤪

Time to rack 😝

This ones a long post such a fun day!
First time using our press really starting to feel like wine makers now 😁

This is a bit of a shout out to Sandhurst butcher supplies who saved the day for us! Long story short got a wine press or should I say half a press from a company from Melbourne who said the rest of the press would be here in time to press our wine. So 2 months later with 5 days out still no complete press and a lot of excuses! Contacted the guys from butcher supplies and they had the exact same press here in 2 days! That’s service!

A bit of a mix of plunging the cap, adding the wine yeast and doing some testing of things 🙂

Even the little guy got in on the action to help out! 😂
The grapes he’s eating are the Grenache grapes grown on the vine behind him, we only gave them to him to hold for the photo but he decided to start scoffing them straight away instead 🤣 He loved them 😍

This day was amazing! We had been waiting for our grapes to arrive with great anticipation, and could not of been any more excited to get started and our hands dirty in the process of making our first vintage of wine 🍷
