This year, the trailer for The Little Mermaid went viral as Black girls and women around the world saw themselves depicted on screen.

Recent films Encanto and Turning Red were also cultural hits.

Why are these pictures seeing so much success? They’re making historically marginalized + underrepresented communities feel seen.

Encanto was the first non-Frozen Disney soundtrack to top Billboard tracks in a decade.

Encanto told the story of the Madrigals, a family who lives in the mountains of Colombia.

And through its cultural inclusivity and relatable themes, Encanto connected with its audience and made people feel seen. There were relatable characters and songs that realistically portrayed mental health + internal hardships that tugged at people’s heartstrings.

Built on top of a foundation of cultural inclusivity, Encanto’s relatable themes transcended cultures.

As soon as Encanto launched on Disney+, hundreds of thousands of user-generated Encanto content took the Internet by storm.

What can brands learn from this?

When you connect with your customers, you make them feel seen — and that leads to:

→ Creating a foundation that attracts like-minded people + start conversations

→ Growing an engaged community of advocates who will buy for your brand for their entire life

→ Increasing traffic, sales, and frequency of purchases — all due to loyal brand advocates

Your marketing can talk to potential customers — or it can connect with your potential customers.

By incorporating cultural inclusivity + relatable themes into your marketing, you can then build bigger tables that feed + honor your community.

This week the world celebrated , but it’s also been a sad week for gender equality 💔

South Korea’s presidential election results forecast a difficult five years for gender equality.

President-elect Yoon has vowed to replace Gender Equality Ministry — which argues that women should be able to live a life beyond the patriarchal family structure — with a new ministry focused on children, family and population instead.

Thank you to Hawon Jung for sharing this informative thread + educating us on the state of women’s rights in South Korea.

Even in this century, there are women subject to oppression by the outcome of legislation. And it’s not just happening in other countries.

Right now, Florida’s LGBTQ+ community are being targeted by the hateful Don’t Say Gay bill. The bill is on its way to the Governor, whose approval is expected, since he’s expressed his support for this bill in the past.

It’s a reminder that we are still fighting for equality. We are fighting for legislation and governments that value everyone — regardless of their gender identity and sexual orientation.

As brands, our voices have the power to change the way people see and experience the world.

You have the power to change the culture, influence how people feel, and expand the horizon of what they know.

Airbnb recently reported its “strongest ever” fourth quarter results, but what does that mean for brands?

Thank you, Michaela Jefferson, for this insight into Airbnb’s marketing strategy 👀❤️

Airbnb sees marketing as a way to educate + build connections — not buy customers.

In 2019, they shifted their marketing spend from performance-driven to brand-driven — and their CFO said that was the right shift in 2019, 2020, and again in 2021.

What does that mean for brands like you?

1️⃣ Put what makes you unique into words + repeat it everywhere to build customer recognition

2️⃣ Show, don’t tell: use stories to show what makes your brand unique — and connect with your customers at the same time

3️⃣ Nurture relationships (with press, other businesses + brand ambassadors) that can help you amplify 1 + 2 above

When you take these 3 simple steps, you put in the work to create brand advocates — those people who feel so passionate about your brand, they rave about you to their friends, family + followers.

Do you have any questions about brand-driven marketing? How are you currently creating brand advocates?

If you’re a business owner, you’ll love this insight...

Growth takes a village (keep reading for more details 👀)

In Filipino language 🇵🇭, the word "bayanihan" literally means "being a community.”

It represents community coming together to achieve a common goal. Everyone gives into the community + receives from it too.

Sometimes it might seem like you have to tackle things on your own, but at the end of the day it takes a community to thrive.

We have numbers from brands in multiple niches to back it ➡️ posts amplifying the community help you reach the community, too. Whether it’s:

→ Collaborating with other brands or creators to amplify a message

→ Reposting (+ crediting) something that helps the original creator reach a larger audience

→ Creating a helpful guide that features other brands + gives to your community

This act of bayanihan in your business helps you + your neighbors grow. You can create genuine connections, build trust with your community, while helping other brands flourish at the same time 🌿

Bayanihan is one of our core values at kapwa studio because everything starts with community. It’s our reminder to act from a place of abundance, because our elders taught us there’s more than enough food for everyone at the table ;)

Tag your favorite POC service providers + business owners who give to the community! We’d love to share some of your stories in ours 🤎

Happy International Mother Language Day! This is a day to promote awareness of — and celebrate 🎉 — linguistic + cultural diversity.

If you’re a POC or BIPGM (Black, Indigenous, People of the Global Majority), you might’ve grown up feeling ostracized or weird when you brought your culture or language to school.

Days like today are so important to celebrate the linguistic + cultural diversity that make us who we are.

That’s one of the reasons we’re obsessed with how our client bridges cultural, generational + language gaps.

Parents Are Human is a bilingual connection card game offered in 7 languages (including English, Simplified + Traditional Chinese, Vietnamese, Spanish, Korean, or Filipino/Tagalog).

It’s the perfect way to bring together bilingual families, or practice a language you’re learning. We know this because we were Parents Are Human customers before became our client!

We’d love to hear: What’s your mother language? What languages do you speak? What cultures do you hold close to your heart?

To all who see themselves in Christina Yuna Lee, your lived experience is valid + worthy of being protected 💜

[Image Description: A tweet by Min Jin Lee ( on Twitter) stating, “As a person of color from a modest family, I have felt both *hyper visible* when hated and hunted and *invisible* when ignored and underrepresented in most spaces of power. I never take my race off and leave it at home. It’s neither a bad nor good thing. It’s my lived experience.

It gives me no consolation when I hear ‘It’s not always about race.’ The idea of racial extraction or discounting wounds me because I am always with my race. It is in my skin, eyes, and hair. I am never without it. For me to function, I need to be at peace with my racial self.

Each one of us has a race, and each one is good. I am saying this obvious thing because when members of my race are injured, insulted, and murdered, I have to pay attention so I can be safe. I want you to be safe, too. Grieve, rest, and also resist.”]

🍝 Have you ever had Filipino spaghetti? It’s the Filipino adaptation of traditional Italian bolognese.

What makes Filipino spaghetti unique is its sweet sauce — traditional tomato sauce sweetened with banana ketchup. Oh, and it’s topped with hot dogs 🌭😂

🤔 Ever wondered — what is banana ketchup + where did it come from?

Filipino food scientist and activist María Y. Orosa invented banana ketchup. Maria Orosa dedicated her work to empower her country to be more self-sufficient by replacing imported foods.

During World War II, tomatoes (an import to the Philippines) were limited in supply. So María Orosa invented banana ketchup, a sweet + tangy sauce that uses bananas — abundant and local to the Philippines — as its base.

Banana ketchup, which might have red food coloring to emulate tomato-based ketchups, is now a staple in Filipino pantries + culture today.

All thanks to María Orosa, who wanted to empower her country to become self-efficient.

Don’t you love a bit of food history?
