Robert Lewandowski scored two late goals to save Barcelona from elimination in the Champions League in a thrilling 3-3 draw with Inter Milan on Wednesday at Camp Nou. The Polish forward dragged Xavi Hernandez's side level at 2-2 in the 82nd minute and then again at 3-3 in stoppage time with a towering header, after Robin Gosens put the Italians ahead with one minute remaining. Barcelona's Champions League fate is no longer in their own hands though and they still face a second consecutive group stage elimination if Inter Milan win at home against eliminated Viktoria Plzen on October 26.
Being on the verge of another early knock-out is a bitter blow for the Catalans, who hoped a summer signing spree including Lewandowski from Bayern Munich could restore their position among Europe's elite.

NEW DELHI: A host of the track and field stars, including st ..
NEW DELHI: A host of the track and field stars, including steepleschaser Avinash Sable and long jumper Murali Sreeshankar, will take part in the upcoming National Games with athletics set to field most number of participants among the 36 sports.
The Games are scheduled to be held in Gujarat from September 29.
Though Olympic champion javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra and Commonwealth Games triple jump gold medallist Eldhose Paul have decided to give the Games a miss, there are still some top athletes taking part in the multi-sport event, held after a gap of seven years.
Annu Rani, who became the first Indian female javelin thrower to win a medal (bronze) in the CWG, will represent Uttar Pradesh.
Star women sprinters Hima Das and Dutee Chand will run for Assam and Odisha respectively. Dutee had won a gold in 100m and bronze in 200m in the last edition of the National Games in Kerala in 2015.
Hima will bid for her maiden medal in the National Games.
Assam's Amlan Borgohain, who recently bettered the men's 100m national record in a Railways meet, and women's 100m hurdles national record holder, Jyothi Yarraji of Andhra Pradesh, are also participating in the Games.
An athlete can achieve an automatic qualification for the 2023 World Championships in Hungary on the basis of National Games performance.
"Yes, I am taking part in the National Games," Sreeshankar told PTI.
His father S Murali said Sreeshankar can try to breach the World Championships qualification standard of 8.25m during the Games.
The world championships qualification period is from July 31, 2022, to July 30, 2023.
The 23-year-old Sreeshankar from Kerala had won a silver in the Birmingham CWG last month with a jump of 8.08m. He has a personal best of 8.36m, but that was in April.
An Athletics Federation of India (AFI) official said Sable, who had won a silver in the Birmingham CWG, will be taking part in the Games, to be held in multiple cities in Gujarat.
The 28-year-old Sable had become the first non-Kenyan to win a medal at the CWG since 1994.
However, Paul and his Kerala triple jump colleague Abdullah Aboobacker, who won silver in the Birmingham CWG in India's 1-2 finish, will not feature in the Games, their coach Harikrishnan confirmed.
As expected, athletics will see most number of participants out of the 36 sports, with more than 600 set to take part. That would make nearly 10 per cent of the total number of participants in the Games, which is likely to be around 7000.
The Games are being held across six cities of Gujarat -- Ahmedabad, Gandhinagar, Surat, Vadodara, Rajkot and Bhavnagar.
Track and field events will be held at IIT Gandhinagar Ground from September 30 to October 4.

The Indian badminton team was selected on the basis of performances at the national junior selection trials and two all-India ranking tournaments.
India’s upcoming badminton players Unnati Hooda and junior world No.1 Anupama Upadhyaya will spearhead the Indian challenge at the BWF World Junior Championships 2022 to be held in Santander, Spain from October 17 to 30.

The 22nd edition of the BWF world junior badminton championships is being held after a gap of two years. The tournaments were cancelled in 2020 and 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
India have won nine medals - one gold, three silvers and five bronze - from the 21 editions of the junior world badminton championships so far.
Saina Nehwal’s gold medal in 2008 remains India’s best finish at the world championships while India’s most recent success came in 2018, when Lakshya Sen, currently India’s top-ranked men’s badminton player, won bronze.
GANDHINAGAR: The table tennis competition of the National Games will be staged well before the opening ceremony on September 29 to ensure the presence of World Championship-bound stars, including Sharath Kamal, G Sathiyan and Manika Batra.
The trio will be among the earliest athletes in action in the 36th National Games in Gujarat as the Organising Committee decided to conduct the table tennis competition from September 20-24.
The schedule had to be advanced as the World Table Tennis Championship begins in Chengdu, China, on September 30.
India's top athletes in 37 disciplines will line up for their respective states at the National Games.

Kabaddi (from September 26), Netball (from September 26), Land Bowls and Rugby 7s (both from September 28) also begin before the Opening Ceremony. Traditional Indian sports Kho-kho, Yogasana and Mallakhamb will make their National Games debut.

The Khelo India Women's Hockey League 22 (Under-16) matches will commence from Tuesday here at the iconic Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium.
The League will see 16 teams divided into Pool A and Pool B vie for top honours. This will be the 1st phase of the League which will go on till 23rd August with each winning team being awarded three points, one point for each team in the event of a draw and zero points for the losing side.
Grouped in Pool A are Sports Authority of India 'A', Bhai Behlo Hockey Academy Bhagta, Ghumanhera Riser's Academy, Citizen Hockey XI, Smart Hockey Academy Raipur, Pritam Siwach Hockey Academy Sonepat, Mumbai School Sports Association and Sports Hostel Bhubaneswar.
In Pool B are Sports Authority of India 'B', Anantapur Hockey Academy, HAR Hockey Academy, Delhi Hockey, Madhya Pradesh Hockey Academy, Odisha Naval TATA Hockey High-Performance Centre, Salute Hockey Academy and Sports Authority of Gujarat Academy.
Talking about the importance of a League for Under-16 age category, Ranjen Ekka, Team Manager of Sports Hostel, Bhubaneswar said, "This is a great initiative by the Government of India and SAI. Getting the right amount of exposure is critical for budding players in this age group category and an exclusive league for Under-16 girls will definitely motivate academies also to develop more players at the grassroot level. Our team is reaching New Delhi on Monday afternoon, we are well-prepared and look forward to a good outing."
Meanwhile, Team Manager Akansha of Madhya Pradesh Hockey Academy said, "This is a great platform for young players. Earlier, we would end up playing Under 16-year-old along with senior players because of their talent but they wouldn't get noticed that much with an exclusive league for this age category, I feel standout players will get recognised and perhaps even get a call-up for National Camps so that they are groomed from a young age."
She further added, "Players from our team are very excited to have arrived in New Delhi and are looking forward to a good League. This is only the first phase of the league and we have come well-prepared to finish first."
