Year 5 Kickoff Post!

Celebration of Life Day was created to celebrate the children in our lives, but it has evolved to encourage all ages to embrace all of the wonderful things about being alive. To represent this holiday, I went outside on World Snow Day (January 21) and let a spirit of childlike wonder reign in me as I sledded, tossed snow, climbed trees, appreciated the artistry of winter, and hopped over thawing brooks.

Next, I celebrated National Come in From the Cold Day. After playing outside in the cold winter air, it felt great to reenter my warm house and sip on hot chocolate.

I am so excited to kickoff my 5th year creating as Jenny’s National Day

January 4. National Spaghetti and Can Do Day. World Hypnotism Day.

I read a story about a person who ate spaghetti circles every day for thirty years until seeing a hypnotist. There truly can be too much of a good thing. Sometimes we need to let go of things we are doing in excess in order to regulate them and reintroduce them in healthier quantities. We can do it if we put in the work. Do you agree?

November 5. National Love Your Red Hair and Redhead Day.

I am not a natural redhead, but my red highlights show in the sun. I've always admired them and thought it would be exciting and fun to be a redhead. This video is my nod to the beauty, playfulness, and versatility of the rare few who have naturally red hair.

October 24. National Food Day.

This day celebrates eating healthy and nutritious food. It was also Taco Tuesday, so I used fish as the protein and made delicious mango salsa as a topping. I also used mini tortilla shells to cut down on carbs and control the portion size. I topped the tacos with fresh cilantro, slices of lime, and a small spoonful of guacamole.

Look for ways to eat the foods you love using healthy and nutritious options.

October 18. National Love Your Body Day.

Many of us feel pressure to look like the perfected images we see in the media. This is not a realistic goal. It’s time to rewrite what we tell ourselves about what we see in the mirror by replacing negative self-talk with encouraging, affirming words. Looking in the mirror does not have to be an unpleasant experience. Redefine your perception of what you see.

It is also National Legging Day. I like the way my body looks and feels in leggings. I am wearing my absolute favorite pair in this post

October 5. National Get Funky and Apple Betty Day.

A Not Spooky October post.

Get Funky with me while I bake a very groovy Apple Betty.

I found this vintage 1970s recipe for Apple Betty on food.com from the Better Homes and Garden Cookbook. My mother used that cookbook on a regular basis. I have a more recent version, so for the video I used my Betty Crocker children's cookbook from the 1970s. I paid $2.95 for it at a school book fair. I cooked my first meal using it back when I was in elementary school.

This Apple Betty recipe is super quick and easy. It's a great alternative to making an apple pie.

This October, I am creating not spooky, yet creative posts that are more costume-based than usual.

September 26. National Better Breakfast and Lumberjack Day.

A storm caused a tree to fall and block the path back to my house. Since it's Lumberjack Day, I have my bow saw with me. I use the saw to cut back the branches and then continue on my morning walk. Once home, I enjoy a healthy breakfast.

September 23. National Checkers Day.
Day.

You can easily make this edible checker board in under 15 minutes. I cut a 2” square out of parchment paper to cut out the bread- pumpernickel and rye. My stone board is 14”x15.” I used cucumbers and pepperoni as playing pieces. I also included some cream cheese on the side to make cream cheese and cucumber sandwiches out of the leftovers.

September 19. International Talk Like a Pirate Day.

Of all the days I celebrate, this one holds the closest place in my heart.

In this year’s Pirate installment, Jenny the Jaded and Gem the Bold are enjoying their ship when their joy is disrupted by an incoming, menacing celestial orb. Concurrently, a violent storm kicks up. Jenny the Jaded is above decks desperately looking for Gem who is meanwhile playing hide and go seek below deck. Will the two find each other and enjoy calm seas once again? Watch and see or ye’ll walk the plank! And remember, you are never too old to play and use your imagination.

Jenny the Jaded often finds ways to celebrate at other times throughout the year as well. I have regularly included my granddaughter into the adventures over the years. We had an absolute blast filming this year’s video!

September 9. National Teddy Bear and Wonderful Weirdos Day.

I was planning on playing at the playground with my bear, but suddenly a thunderstorm kicked up so I modified the storyline. As the thunder and rain begin, my bear and I race into the house and find ways to amuse ourselves!

It might seem weird for an adult to feature a giant teddy bear in a video, but whimsy can be wonderful and refreshing in such a jaded world.

September 3. National Welsh Rarebit Day.

This is a simple, doable recipe using ingredients you likely already have in the kitchen:

Combine in saucepan and melt-
2-3 Tbsp Irish Butter
1 cup of beer
2-3 cups of sharp cheddar cheese

1 Tbsp Paprika

Toast (I used Portuguese rolls cut in half)

Pour melted ingredients over toast and heat in broiler for 2-4 minutes

Top with
Eggs, sunny side up
Fresh ground pepper to taste

Today’s the day to get all dressed up and wear your little black dress to support heart health and stroke awareness for women. Gyros are high in Iron which carries oxygen to your lungs and heart.

We decided to make an old time, 1940’s style radio commercial complete with foley sounds to enhance the listeners’ experience.

August 25. National Banana Split Day.

Summer is about to “split,” so let’s top it off with some yummy ice cream, whipped cream, and chocolate sauce! Oh and don’t forget the bananas! Just be careful you don’t slip on the peel.

June 27. National Sunglasses Day.

We have been having very stormy weather the past few days. I ran out for a walk as soon as I saw a ray of sunshine, but the sky soon turned dark and it started to sprinkle. But I kept walking until I found another moment of sunshine. Keep committed to improving your health even when a rain cloud joins you on a walk. You will dry off and feel good for keeping your commitment to exercise.

Additionally, trying not to be a perfectionist or high production for this post. Life has been busy, so I went for it and created a simple, fun, fast post to show that I am still celebrating.

April 14. National Reach as High as You Can, Look Up at the Sky Day.

For some reason, I cannot post reels, so doing it as a video the old-fashioned way

I see these two celebrations as being related. Reach as High as You Can Day has several meanings including setting goals high and reaching for them. In order to do this, you really have to say, “the sky’s the limit.”

March 30. National Crayon Day.

Friday night and I decide to have some Chunky Monkey ice cream which reminds me of Curious George which reminds me of childhood which reminds me that today is National Crayon Day. So, I decided to make a fun post to celebrate all of those things! Enjoy!

March 17. National Corned Beef & Cabbage, St. Patrick's Day.

Feeling very festive for St. Patrick's Day, I decide to make the much loved corn beef and cabbage for dinner. But that's not all- I enhance the meal with Irish cheeses, Irish soda bread, Irish bangers (sausage), Irish potatoes, and leprechaun cupcakes. As usual, I found some really fun and affordable decorations at my local dollar store, Party City and Target. I made the signs for the cheeses.

I found this very simple and effective corned beef and cabbage recipe on a website called, The Magical Slow Cooker.
