We must talk about our history…all of it. As James Baldwin wrote;
History, as nearly no one seems to know, is not merely something to be read. And it does not refer merely, or even principally, to the past. On the contrary, the great force of history comes from the fact that we carry it within us, are unconsciously controlled by it in many ways, and history is literally present in all that we do. It could scarcely be otherwise, since it is to history that we owe our frames of reference, our identities, and our aspirations.
And it is with great pain and terror that one begins to realize this. In great pain and terror one begins to assess the history which has placed one where one is, and formed one’s point of view. In great pain and terror because, thereafter, one enters into battle with that historical creation…and attempts to recreate oneself according to a principle more humane and more liberating: one begins the attempt to achieve a level of personal maturity and freedom which robs history of its tyrannical power, and also changes history.
What a gift to hear the lyrical weave tales of adversity, struggle, and triumph throughout the history of our nation, from black educators to civil rights leaders to today’s students. I am humbled and incredibly inspired.

I haven’t had time for videos this week, but as I enter week 7 of my , let’s dive into the data. These are all markers of cardio health. For resting heart rate, lower indicates less risk of cardiovascular disease. For heart rate recovery and variability, higher numbers indicate lower risk. Mine are all trending in the direction I want.
As a reminder, I was doing Barre, yoga, and fairly regular cycling, spinning, and/or hiking for years prior to May 2023.
In May 2023, I started running again, after quitting since 2020 due to COVID risks associated with asthma. I was nearly ready to run a 5k when I got COVID in July, which indeed triggered asthma and a prolonged recovery period.
I wasn’t able to exercise at all from July-mid November, other than walking and gentle yoga.
In November, I started working back up to a 5k running distance and have gradually returned to Barre, yoga, and spinning. I’m not back fully to prior activity levels, but I’m getting there.
You can see the trend lines reflect my activity levels. Although it doesn’t always feel like it on a day-to-day basis, my activity is making a difference.
Setbacks will come, but consistency matters.
Yes! That’s what it’s all about!
