Dear esteemed Cleveland City Council representatives and Mayor Bibb-
I wanted to reach out to you all and thank you for this amazing news of the allocation of $10 million of ARPA to the creative sector and all the artists, creative businesses and cultural non-profits that call Cleveland its home and place of business. I was one of several artists who spoke at Public Comment from Artist Bridge Coalition about this support. As a person who can see from the grassroots level how art can change lives, this support will be incredibly helpful (and lifesaving) to artists who are
doing amazing and connective work to the citizens and neighborhoods of Cleveland.
I am an artist, run two arts-based businesses Art EverySpace located in Hough and also operate a gallery Yards Projects at Worthington Yards in the Historic Warehouse District and Ohio City. I teach observational drawing to men who are in residential treatment at YHAVEN off Woodland and am an arts faculty at Cleveland State University. I co-founded and was Executive Director of Zygote Press, a non-profit printmaking studio and gallery in Cleveland for over 25 years in both the St. Clair Superior neighborhood and Collinwood. I am currently co-managing logistics through Art EverySpace for the Collective Arts Network Triennial concurrent with FRONT Triennial in six neighborhoods in over 16 venues. Our sector is slowly limping back from the pandemic and this news of ARPA support is incredible.
I have seen the devastation this pandemic has had on artists in all stages of their careers and on many fronts. The pandemic devastated the arts sector and put a blaring spotlight on a host of disparities that are only growing across the region. The arts and cultural sector, despite these, came together to help residents through our work in educational, socio-economic, neighborhood-supporting and health and healing spaces throughout the pandemic and made us more connected to each other. We organized and created grassroots artists organizations like Cleveland Black Artists of Cleveland Kuumba, NIVA, Third Space Action Lab, CSU Arts Education Consortium, the Collective Arts Network and the Artist Bridge Coalition. The Assembly for the Arts and the leadership of Jeremy Johnson leveraged our voices and organized with us. As our city looks to recover from the pandemic, you all committed to making hard decisions about how to invest federal funding authorized by the American Rescue Plan Act and you supported us.
The ARPA funding represents an incredible opportunity to strengthen our city’s creative workforce with an eye towards the future, so our work can support those hardest hit by the pandemic through intersections of education, economic, therapy-connected programs, and public art initiatives. I commend you all in the inclusion of ART to the Health and Human Committee chaired by Kevin Conwell. The Creative Workforce continues to pursue representation in the city’s decision-making where an arts and cultural budget along with a broader cultural plan will aid this city in the healing and transformation process. Cleveland dynamism awaits us.
I have been telling everyone about this support. I wanted to say thank you for your collective work making the City of Cleveland stronger and more connected.
We all need to get the word out to the Creative Workforce to make sure everyone knows about this support and can easily access the ARPA funds. The sector is dedicated to
work beyond barriers to ensure all our Cleveland creatives can receive this recovery support.
Thank you Thank you so very much,
Liz Maugans
