The crisis in Manipur wouldn’t have become a crisis if the BJP Government upheld democratic principles. Unsurprisingly, they didn’t. In 2017, the BJP defied the people’s mandate and formed the government in Manipur.

However, on 17th June, 2020, 9 MLA’s, including 4 from NPP and 3 from BJP, withdrew their support from the BJP-led Manipur Government. This led to a loss of majority for the BJP before the upcoming Rajya Sabha Polls. The Secular Progressive Front (SPF), a newly formed alliance comprising the Congress party, the NPP and others, staked the claim to the government in the state. However, the BJP immediately went into damage control mode, whether it meant breaking the rules or not. The CBI, lead by Amit Shah, summoned former CM and Congress leader Ibobi Singh. The timing of the summons was clearly a political vendetta to buy time to solve the issue. Without any floor test, the speaker disqualified 4 MLAs before the RS polls, while 3 were allowed to vote. Ibobi Singh expressed his discontentment over the alleged partiality and undermining of the law by the Speaker with regards to the judgment of the disqualification case.

However, that too didn’t make a difference. Finally, the central government summoned 4 of the NPP MLA’s to Delhi who had talks with JP Nanda and Amit Shah, after which, all problems were solved. There was no floor test and the BJP won the RS seat.

What happened in the meeting? What was offered to the MLA’s to change their votes? Why does the BJP continue to defy procedure and democratic principles? Let’s raise our voices on our social media platforms and highlight this issue. BJP has been at the forefront of horse-trading and has always misused their power.
