What I’ve Been Writing 24/01/2023

So, despite the precedent on my blog, this isn’t a story. I haven’t written a short story in a while and I just wanted to let those of you that do read my blog know why, so no one thinks I just vanished into the echoing void of the internet never to return. Last summer my wife and I moved, with all the changes in work, church, living situation, et cetera that this naturally entails. ...

Inktober Day 3: Bat 03/10/2022

Squeak! Squeak! If Jeff had ever imagined turning into a vampire, he would have pictured it quite differently. Evening dress, a brooding castle, maybe even a cool name like Dracula or Carmilla. Definitely less squeaking. And that taste – ugh! – he didn’t think he would ever get that taste out of his mouth. It didn’t help that he could eat no other food....

Inktober Day 2: Scurry 02/10/2022

Wake up, eyes bright, twitch nose, flick tail, look out. Dark. Lights out, cat gone, did anyone leave a crumb? Hear purring cat thrum, thrum, thrum. Can’t see cat, where’s it at? Stay? Go? Stay? Go? Go!...

Inktober Day 1: Gargoyle 02/10/2022

The rain fell. The gargoyle sat, stiff and brooding, water running off his nose and wings arched in a vain attempt to keep the wet off. More rain fell. Did the stone creature wonder why he sat there grimacing in the cold rain, hour after hour, day after day? Maybe he did. Maybe we have to wonder for him. After all, he had sat there for eight hundred years and no one had ever needed him....

The Somnambulist 14/07/2022

Carter Branagan woke from a dreamless sleep. He sighed and yanked off the headband that circled his forehead; plucked the dreamstone from its mounting and looked at it reproachfully. The marble-sized pearl sat innocently in his palm; its inner depths blank with the vague mistiness of forgetful slumber. With a snort of vexation, he threw it into the bowl that stood ready on his bedside table; realizing even as he heard the soft click of stone against stone that instead of throwing it in the trash as he had intended, he had thrown it smack into his hoard of unused dreamstones....

MTO Horror: Kelly Griffiths 11/06/2022

MTO Horror: Kelly Griffiths There’s something odd about a brightly lit building late at night.  A rolled-up wad of tape on the floor of an empty hallway has the distant, not-quite-thereness of a museum exhibit and the da…

A Voice in the Wood The stranger stopped to listen.  That couldn’t be her voice calling his name, could it?  The voice called again, “Edward!” it said, “Where are you?”  He shook his head.  Not her…

The Dream Lady When Don Alger was a small boy he made his first drawing.  “What is it?” his mom asked. “It’s my dream lady,” he replied.  “Your dream lady?” she suppressed a laugh.  “The lady I see…
