Refugio old dog village, help us make a home for old and sick dogs

Slowly getting there.. so frustrating when the weathers cold and bleak but we hope the end result will be worth the wait to give our oldest a warm, sheltered communal space to sleep along with a comfortable room to receive their acupuncture and laser treatments 💚

Another grumpy old dog for the collection❤️ jorge came from a council pound up north, where he was getting attacked by other dogs and had no chance to get out..

Well we were hoping it would be finished for the winter but it's slowly coming along.. Sadly the carpenter creating it has had some brutal bad luck with health in the family so we are just grateful he has been able to find a little time for us.. Hopefully it wont be long now, its going to be a beauty! ❤️🐾

Its been a long time coming but.. the parts are here and next weekend finally starts the construction of the new treatment/ kennels room 🤞🍀🤞

Old to the refuge, but new to the comfort of the old dog village 💚

Duvet cover appeal!.. after collecting so many nice thick duvets during the winter, and summer now just around the corner, we are thinking the old dogs can continue to enjoy them to stretch out and relax on outside, and it seems they aprove! But to keep them a bit cooler, we would like to cover them with duvet covers, dark colours or patterned that wont show the dirt!😸 if you have any old ones you nolonger want, or summer cotton type throws,we would be really grateful of them please! Thank you! ❤

Finally!! 💪💪 thanks to our great volunteers and a helpful cement truck driver, the base for our new delayed treatment room, is finally setting as we speak 💙

❤We are desperate for thick warm blankets,duvets or fleeces, we have enough towels its the warm things our oldies really need.. 🐾

❤for our old & sick dogs we also desperately need donations of dog pate, the sort like the ones in the photo with our little blind spiro, brand not important... We use around 16 a day just keeping old stomachs full and its difficult at the moment to keep stocked up! 🐾

Whilst corona has slowed down the progress of the old dog village,our intake of oldies hasn't changed! Old,blind spiro is the latest one to join us, after being asked by a local council pound to give him a chance 💚 his home isn't very fancy at the moment, not that he can see it anyway..but work is starting again now and his new palace will be one of the priorities 🐾

slowly but surely the old dogs village continues! all this corona business has slowed us down but luckily, no matter what else is going on, all the money to complete our plans so far is ready and waiting, thanks to all your kind donations! ❤️ heres the start of the treatment room which was paid for by donations raised by the helping paws auction :)

Well stage one,the blind dog pen is,bar a couple of little touches,complete!
But before it could get completely finished it has 2 new, old lady residents. All the way from the spanish border. Originally we went for old daisy, who has leish and neurological problems making it difficult to walk. But we ended up meeting stella,a fossil of a spaniel with a zest still for life so brought her back too! ❤ the pen will allow them to settle in peace before meeting the rest of the gang later on, and then we can finish it up 😊
So far with all the materials,fencing and the wood house the blind pen has cost just under 1600euros. Thank you to everyone who donated and helped us get this done! The treatment room is already underway so we just need to get back to normal so we can crack on with its huge base! You can also add guilt free eggs to your order for just 2euro donation per half dozen! Our eggs come from our rescue chickens who have plenty of outdoor space and are free to enjoy good food,real earth and fresh air,unlike chickens from shop bought eggs 🐔 alternatively can be collected in lagoa or estombar..

last pictures of the blind dogs house before hopefully,weather permitting, it arrives this weekend! :) thanks to nigel, mike and alex, the base is ready and waiting, so then its left to fence their area off and phase one, the blind dogs area, will be almost ready ❤️

Another one for the collection of un-adoptable and unwanted,, meet Bones! the sweetest bag of skin and bones you could ever meet! she was lucky to have been rescued by another shelter who have been trying to help her for a while, finally their vet got to the cause of the problem, she's diabetic, another one.. so here's another p*e machine to add to collection of incontinent and the "just can't be bothered to go outside" dogs in the house ❤️🤣

we're on our way!.. first stage, the blind dogs! Joe is busy in his workshop building their wooden house and ace volunteer Nigel is busy this week preparing the base! if anyone in the area has some time this week and wouldn't mind giving a few hours to help nigel with the base,please let us know! this is Claudia! she is a specialist in acupuncture, laser therapy,biores and many more alternative treatments. she is the lady that helped our old crippled girl preta to walk again!
every week for almost 2 years now, she has donated a whole afternoon of her time to come and treat the old and sick in the refuge. they love her visits and really benefit from her therapies! at the moment, with more and more dogs receiving her care, the only place suitable for claudia to make the treatments is the old horse trailer! after the houses and the fencing of the old dog village are done,and we have the basics already in place, we really would like to make a proper treatment room for the dogs to receive their treatments in comfort and peace. we will need a larger wood house, a sturdy hydrolic table, good nonslip,easy clean, covering for the floor and a few shelves and p*e proof cupboards to store the many homepathics and alternative meds she leaves for the animals each visit! so, the project won't end at houses and fences, we will keep going until the old dogs have literally everything we can give them to make the rest of their life the best it can be ❤️ paypal [email protected]

our first wood house is under way! we have been lucky enough to have had enough donations to have a wood house for the blind dogs especially made to order instead of a generic flat pack from the shop! it will be made by local craftsman joe, who makes wooden animal homes for all shapes and sizes here in the algarve.. on monday our star building volunteer,nigel, will start on the bases for the houses!
becasue of your generousity this project has amazingly started before 2020 has even been rung in!❤️

with more generous donations we are now up to 3662 euros! this amazing amount means that we have enough to get started and get the basics done! the wood houses and their bases,all the fencing,gates, steps changed to ramps and a few other bits modified to make life easier for the old ones! after that then we will see how much more we will need to modify the old shelter and to make a treatment room, plus any other suggestions we get along the way that'll make the old dog village comfy for all ❤️

Not all of our plans for the old dog village need donations, some will just need love! Every week Rhonda gets a visit from dave, for this old girl and her friends its the highlight of their week. At the moment its only possible to have volunteers on a thursday when there's enough people to supervise rowdy dogs and hooligan sheep! But with the enclosed old dog village we hope it will mean more visits for dogs like rhonda, more cuddles and more time to just sit,relax and enjoy the company ❤

With new donations(big thank you,added to the list!❤) comes a new total!... 3340 euro!😮❤ amazing! We are now waiting for feedback on possible discounts for materials and quotes for the wood houses! We know we have 60 meters of fencing to get done,thanks to volunteer Nigel and his trusty tape measure! and thanks to everyone who donated so far, we have funds to plan for 1 wood house for the blind dogs, 1 wood house for recovery/ introduction and a 3rd wood house for sleeping and snoozing! 🐾 next is the sloping of of the steps into ramps and the biggest job converting the old out house into an old dog palace.. so if you were thinking of donating please do! Old lady Preta definitely has something to smile about,, in just over a week we have raised so far 2740 euros to create the old dog village! we've been amazed just how many kind people have donated to bring the dream of a special place for old and sick dogs to have a home into reality! we want this to be the best place for the oldies ever! so we will continue to collect donations for this special project as we still have a way to go, but since we already have now enough to start with the basics we are already planning to start the work asap!
