South Brisbane based hobby breeder of both pure and fun cross breed chickens

See you little guys and gals in 21 days.

04/07/2024

Ok I think I may have to buy myself a crazy chicken lady shirt now. This morning I was keeping warm by the heater, sipping a cuppa and watching the CCTV in the coops to see which lady laid what egg.... I can confirm the left egg is a brahma pullet and the right a multigen "easter egger" that didn't inherit the blue gene

The start of a rainbow on a rainy day.

26/06/2024

It's been a struggle to not pop all the eggs in the incubator right now but with some of the flocks the chicks would be a mixed batch. Ok who am I kidding. I have 7 blue eggs in the incubator πŸ˜… the rest are being used to feed the family for now

Goodbye shorter days, hello longer days. With the winter solstice yesterday day lengths will slowly start increasing, this means over the coming weeks hens on break will slowly start coming back into lay. To celebrate this one of our Marans gifted us with a egg.
Many of our flocks are free ranging together so it looks like we may have to start thinking about penning them back into their breeding groups, because it can take up to 4 weeks to ensure eggs are fertilised by the intended rooster.

Looks like SoloSun the Brahma is working out her kinks. Egg #2 and #3 pictured next to Pearl's blue/green egg

18/06/2024

Looks like my 11 month old pullets didn't get the memo about shorter days = less eggs. Two have stared laying, although the Brahma has a few kinks to work out (size and shape) but in all fairness it is her first egg

Eggs are finally starting to roll in!
Today one of the girls laid this beauty. It's covered by a bloom giving it a much lighter appearance, underneath it's a few shades darker

Meet Copper. She's an 8th generation "Easter egger." Despite looking like she may have inherited the blue egg gene due to her pea comb, she lays a pretty golden egg. The blue egg gene and the pea comb gene are said to be closely linked, but this link can be broken as early as the second generation cross to a straight comb

When your 6 week old babies are catching up in size. Temps are getting low here in my part of Queensland, but Bella is still doing a great job keeping these babies cosy over night. Day lengths are short so eggs are a rare treat these days, so I'll have to make up for it with flock photos

18/01/2024

Solo Sun the light Brahma lookalike. My older sons love this big gentle lady, have claimed her as her own and now want more big chickens! I may have to give in to chicken math and add some pure Brahma next πŸ˜…

It's 2024!! My gosh the past few months went flying as fast as a chicken when the coop door opens in the morning!!. I haveb een super busy with my little farm hands, holidays and crazy weather of heat waves and flooding so rather slask on posting much.
Fertile eggs and chicks will be slim pickings over the Autumn and winter months as we focus on resting and raising. We may have the odd bird available but mostly from now until the season starts I'll mainly be updating on how our flocks are growing. Wishing you all a wonderful 2024

24/11/2023

I have a chick order currently hatching and will most likely have some spares. There will be pure Marans (blue/black/splash copper) and first generation Olive eggers (Marans x Araucana). Only a limited number.
I also still have some older olive eggers available

17/11/2023

Did a nest check and found a mini rainbow. No bright blue Araucana eggs though.
I'm hoping I also get some nice olives from this seasons F1 and BC hatch now I have darker genetics than in the past.

Now should I incubate the blue laced Barnevelder eggs that are with the blue Marans? The eggs would be a shade between the Marans and Barnevelder (possibly speckled) but oh my, the birds would be stunning

Some Marans, various crosses from my flocks and some Silkies for myself. I'm hoping to get some quality silkies from this lot for future breeding, they also make eggcellent broodies

24/08/2023

Fertility testing has started! This means we sadly won't have any fertile eggs available until satisfied with the results, but we will have chicks available in the coming weeks

Photos from AussieHens coops's post 22/08/2023

I can't wait to start testing our Marans fertility (BBS Copper pen). We currently have a Blue Copper rooster over Splash Copper and Black Copper hens. With these pairings you can expect chicks in all three colour varieties

19/08/2023

We are finally starting to see some eggs again! Marans, heavy bloomed green egger (Welsummer x Araucana) and little mix bantam Bella's egg

10/08/2023

We are egerly awaiting eggs from our Black Copper Marans pullets. Fingers crossed they lay similar (or darker) than the eggs they hatched from

All the ladies except the Leghorns are still on winter break. So here is a throwback to somw of what we were getting. 🀞the ladies and new pullets don't keep us waiting too much longer

10/06/2023

It's that time of year when we have to do the walk of shame down the egg isle at the grocery store, 5 hungry kids and 2 adults doesn't leave many left to incubate when they slow down for the winter 😬
Hopefully it won't be too long before the ladies pick back up again (expecting normal laying output early July)
On a plus I'm still fulfilling my addiction through outsourcing new blood from fellow breeders. We currently have 6 Silkie eggs in the incubator. 🀞for some more nice ladies to add to John Snows flock
