Robin Xiong For State Senate District 3
Your favorite Rhode Island townie and hopefully the first Asian-American legislator in Rhode Island
Shout out to my volunteers who are the kindest and coolest people around. I couldn’t have done it without them. Go out and vote tmrw folx!
Being as vocal as I am about people-centered urban design means that I am lucky to be contacted some of the most compassionate, interesting neighbors around. Paul Klinkman, a prolific, local climate-related inventor, emailed me one day to say he's working on two books about energy solutions to address climate change. He shared one 12,000-word excerpt on transportation (DM if you'd like to read it!) and had to share one of the most striking passages with y'all.
Green, clean, accessible transit is environmental justice. Environmental justice is racial justice and justice for the working class. Solutions to some of our generations most pressing issues are intertwined and intersectional. And I'm so glad neighbors like Paul know it.
Here's the rest of that quote:
"Our society needs to encourage walking and bicycling. However, forcing bicyclists to die or to get injured for doing right by the climate is another way of asking the poor of the nation (and likewise of the world) to pay gratis for the climate largess of the relatively wealthy. Again, the motor vehicle manufacturers whose products are involved in most of the killings and maimings, and the governments that build substandard bicycle infrastructure, are largely immune from any class action lawsuits that would restore the balance between them and innocent pedestrians."
Me pictured with the legend walking from PROVIDENCE to NEW YORK the night I met Val—Jonathan Stalls is doing incredible work around and just came out with a book on his experience walking through life, and everyone should read it. Thanks for the inspo, Jonathan 🚶🏻♀️
I met Val at an event hosted by at featuring Jonathan Stalls of . She lives in my district! I am incredibly honored to have the opportunity to represent and uplift people like her. And I'm grateful she shared her statement from that night, because I couldn't have said it better. Here it is in full!
"I no longer call myself a pedestrian, because it sounds so...pedestrian. I call myself a foot traveler.
After a long journey to becoming car-free, I look around and see that *someone* wants those of us who drive less to exist in silos: cyclist, pedestrian, scooter rider, person walking to the bus. It occurs to me that the automotive manufacturers, the fossil fuel industry, and their advertising firms don't want America to see the who drive less and less. And who are--increasingly--vulnerable to traffic violence.
If we were seen as a single constituency of , then we would be recognized as a workforce, a consumer powerhouse, and a political group to be reckoned with. It is in *someone's* interest that we remain in silos."
There are only SEVEN days left till the primary...have you donated to a progressive yet?

Also! Super talented AS220 artist Madison Edmond, community organizer, and fellow Peace and Plenty garden member is doing an incredible memorial fund for Ka Xiong, copied below:
On Saturday, August 6, my friend and Hmong elder, Ka Xiong, was hit by a car while crossing the street. She passed away the next day due to traumatic brain injuries.
Ka was the heart and soul of the community garden I am a part of. She was extremely generous, kind and funny. At 79 years old, she maintained two enormous, THRIVING & immaculate plots at Peace & Plenty. A total bad ass. We frequently exchanged seeds and herbs and helped each other water our gardens. The last time I saw her, I had parked my bike next to her plot and when I waved goodbye to Ka, she told me to check my bike helmet. It was filled with zucchinis! 💚
Her memorial fund is still falling short by a few thousand dollars, so I made this 3 layer silkscreen print to help support. If you donate $10 or more to Ka's fund, I will send you a print. Here's what you need to do:
1. Venmo me $10 or more at
2. DM me your address via instagram
3. I will be sending all of the money to Pang Xiong, a close relative of Ka and will share that receipt with all of you
Let me know if you have any questions. Thanks for helping me support my friend, my gardening community and Ka's family. Lots of love. 💚🥒🌽🥬🥕💚
Through the seeds that she planted, Ka Xiong lives!
I'm so grateful to have met incredible community advocates and human beings in this process. As we count down the days till the primary, I'd love to share some of their stories with you.
I met Doug at the Peace and Plenty Garden, where my relative Ka Xiong was killed walking home one night. He's emailed me weekly since that day. At Ka's funeral, he spoke of her life in a light and love that had us crying and laughing. And then he called for action.
Pedestrian deaths are increasing nationwide every year. And they're completely preventable, and the result of decades of urban planning and policy that favors cars over people. Our neighborhoods and cities and streets are supposed to be for us. No one should die crossing a street in Providence.
Tomorrow (Saturday) at 11 AM we are having a big door knocking event. Come join us at Fargnoli Park with Matt Brown, Democrat for Rhode Island Governor, Cynthia Mendes for RI, and all the Providence Rhode Island Political Cooperative Candidates: Damian Lima For Representative D6, Robin Xiong For State Senate District 3, Savannah DaCruz for State Rep. District 2, Arthur Flanders for State Senate, and me. We will have Providence's La Guaguita del Sabor there to provide food for all the volunteers. Message me or comment below if you will be joining us.
Every bit helps as we count down the days till the primary on September 13th!

Four Senate candidates could be first Asian Americans elected to R.I. legislature - The Boston Globe Four women aim to represent communities ranging from rural West Greenwich to Providence’s East Side.
Late to posting, but so lucky to have sat down with Steve Alqhuist of Uprise RI to talk about the things my neighborhood and I care about.
Robin Xiong makes her case as progressive challenger to Zurier in Senate District 3 "The people I interact with at the doors are excited. A lot of people comment on my age. They appreciate someone who is younger, someone progressive, running for things that they care about, like education and affordable housing. We talked to one constituent who said, 'I'm rich, but my daughter will...
