ย Did you know? There are at least 21 types of grains! And each type makes up the bulk of our diet in specific ways. ๐
This post by FITTR Coach Anil Malik ( ย ) explains the Big 5 Grains and their nutritional value, for you to understand the best fit as per your diet.
1) Ragi aka Finger Millet
The superfood of grains, as it is called, contains massive amounts of fibre and is quite nutritious when consumed on a diet. The fibre keeps unwanted food cravings at bay and helps lose weight effectively.
2) Makka aka Maize
The most popular cereal grain, it is densely rich in vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. The yellow corn is a good source of antioxidants and promotes eye health.
3) Kuttu aka Buckwheat
The nutrients found in buckwheat play an important role in controlling blood sugar levels. This grain is rich in protein, fibre and flavonoids which are believed to help people with type 2 diabetes by improving insulin resistance.
4) Samo Rice aka Barnyard Millet
A fantastic source of energy, the samo rice or samak chawal is widely used to prepare upma, khichdi and pulav especially during the fasting days. The grain is low on carbs and digests slowly.
5) Gehu aka Wheat
Every householdโs favourite, this nutrient-dense grain has relatively low calories and is a very good source of dietary fibre.
