Zeynab Ali: using your voice for your community | Youth Rise MKE Many people immigrate to America every day, either looking for refuge or for a place to start over. Zeynab Ali, an 18-year-old activist and leader in her community, is one of those immigrants. She and her family are Somalian refugees who immigrated to Milwaukee to make a better life for themselves.

"I just want my peers and other youth to know that we have a voice, and that voice has been with us before we were even born. We are proud to announce the release of Passing the Torch: Activism in Milwaukee Then and Now, our second edition of Youth Rise MKE.

For this issue, we learned from our elders who lead Milwaukee's open housing marches as young people, as well as from those we are deeming descendants of the marchers, people who are carrying on this legacy by “marching” in different ways to create positive change and work for justice in our city today.

We hope you enjoy it, feel inspired, and share it with your friends!

Teen recovered from drug addiction, advocates for local youth | Youth Rise Milwaukee Magazine You may now hear Arthur speaking out passionately and encouraging youth in Milwaukee at various community events, but not too long ago he was one of the young people in need of this very message of hope and healing.

Thanks for telling our story NNS! The stories we hear, know and spread about our city will only change when we start to tell different stories and engage different people in the actual telling of these stories. Youth voice is such an essential piece of the storytelling fabric in our city, and we are excited to be paving the way to promote youth voices and expand perspectives in Milwaukee. All of our students did such an amazing job!

"This conviction to do what is right has made Leonard who he is and has taken his activism beyond the walls of his high school. Leonard is also a talented poet and uses his art as an outlet and form of advocacy.
