Upon This Rock

Upon This Rock

Intrigue, terrorism, history, art & Church secrets collide in a relentless page-turner. "Sam Spade w/ the wit of Nick & Nora." (Will Snyder).

"An elegant, twisty thriller" (Armistead Maupin), "the gay DaVinci Code, but better" (Fenton Johnson).

Upon This Rock upon Explora Journeys upon Pacific waves. Author David Eugene Perry is onboard lecturing about his “elegant, twisty thriller” (Armistead Maupin) that is “giddy with assassins, terrorists, shady priests, human trafficking, and megawatt conspiracies. Surrounded by wily characters and never relinquishing its sense of humor, the story is wrapped in an astounding amount of history” (Kay Kudukis, Palm Springs Life). Quite simply it’s “the gay ‘DaVinci Code’ but a lot better” (Fenton Johnson) and currently in screenplay development.

Perry is working on “Rock”’s sequel, tentatively entitled “Thorns of the 15 Roses” inspired by the picturesque Spanish town of Grazalema in Andalusia, but whose first part includes an at-sea murder, so…watch out. 🙂

Today in history: April 8, 1474 - Spanish explorer Ponce de León is born in Santervás de Campos, Valladolid, Spain.

The life, legacy and legends of Ponce de León are an important part of the backstory to the sequel of David Eugene Perry’s award winning mystery thriller, Upon This Rock. Tentatively entitled “Thorns of the 15 Roses”, Perry’s underway-new-book takes place aboard ship and in the small Andalusian town of Grazalema — whose history and surroundings arw rich in the lore of the de León family.

Murder, mystery, present day Ukraine and the Spanish Civil War are all part of the mix. Stay tuned!

Known for leading the first official European expedition to Puerto Rico in 1508 and Florida in 1513, Ponce de León was of noble birth and served in the Spanish military from a young age. He first came to the Americas as a “gentleman volunteer” with Christopher Columbus’s second expedition in 1493 and later searched for the mythical “Fountain of Youth.”

Today in history: January 25, 1533, English King Henry VIII marries Anne Boleyn, defying the will of Pope Clement VII and establishing the dominance of a new religion, the Anglican Church, in England.

At the center of this defining moment in history: Orvieto, Italy, where Clement was in residence when the ambassadors from London came asking the Pope for Henry’s permission to divorce Katherine of Aragon.

Clement dithered. Henry fumed and finally said “I’m done” and did what he wanted to, setting off centuries of religious strife whose ramifications still echo. Poor Clement. Poor Katherine. Poor Ann. Two wives down, four to go.

Clement’s stay in Orvieto and the schism between the Roman and Protestant Churches is the Renaissance back story at the heart of solving the mystery in David Eugene Perry’s award winning novel Upon This Rock. Get your copy at the link below.
