THE #1 REASON OLDER DOGS ARE EUTHANIZED MIGHT SURPRISE YOU: PAINFUL JOINTS.๐ฅ๐ฆด๐พ
Osteoarthritis and the pain, limited mobility, and diminished quality of life that accompany it claim more dogsโ lives than any other cause ๐. The most important thing to remember is the process of joint degeneration is happening long before your dog begins limping.
There are many drugs and medications available to treat arthritis pain in dogs, but they come with a whole host of possible side effects ranging from mild GI symptoms to organ damage.
But there is good news! A recent study published in the international journal of molecular sciences, shows dogs with osteoarthritis supplemented๐ with glucosamine PLUS curcumin๐ซ resulted in less pain, better mobility, and even decreased damage to the cartilage in joints. In another study, dogs fed a diet containing curcumin, plus collagen and green tea๐ extract had significantly reduced osteoarthritis pain, and became more mobile.
The constituents in foods have real, healing properties, and you can take advantage of curcuminโs powerful anti-inflammatory effects to support your dogโs joints whether heโs been diagnosed with osteoarthritis or youโre being proactive to prevent joint damage.
Curcumin is found in turmeric๐ซ, and weโve included this golden root in many recipes in the The Forever Dog LIFE book to make it easy for you to incorporate its benefits - which also include antioxidant and anticancer properties - in your dogโs๐ถ (and catโs๐ป) every day life.
Here are a few of the gems๐ youโll find in our new book to help you introduce this health-promoting spice to your four-legged family members:
Try our Apoptosis Bites ๐ง๐ซ๐ for a snack that packs a functional punch. Apoptosis is the bodyโs clean-up mechanism to remove old or diseased cells, and add curcumin here to boost this natural process.
Or make our Ultimate 2.0 Turmeric Paste๐ฏ - and supercharge it with green tea๐ต for even more benefits. And bone broth๐ซ๐ฆด, rich in collagen, is the perfect vehicle for turmeric to lend its joint-supporting assistance.
And, of course, we included turmeric๐ซ in a number of our complete and balanced recipes. Itโs a superstar ingredient that provides essential nutrients, too! For more information or to pre-order, visit www.ForeverDogLIFE.com
This is very exciting and something we can contribute to!! ๐
๐ฅ NEW RAW V DRY STUDY NEEDS YOUR HELP! ๐ฅ
I mentioned a few weeks ago we were planning a retrospective analysis of dry and raw-fed dogs in a single veterinary hospital - in essence, by comparing their vet records from the previous year, we will see who uses the vet more and for what. We will then get this study published in a top journal and use it to further the raw movement globally, to the great benefit of millions of cats and dogs.
The picture painted by many is that research is incredibly, prohibitively expensive for the public to do but in reality, most of the really valuable studies, such as this one, are far from it. The data is already there. Already collected by vets. We just have to look. Our small team can get this done for $48,500
We need your help to do this.
The fact is, all of us - from the owner of a pet enjoying real food each day and now saving you a fortune at the vets to the pet shop that can't keep raw in stock or the pet food manufacturer with a nice, positive bank sheet - all have profited in their own way from such works before.
Please donate (and learn more about the study) here...
https://experiment.com/projects/who-has-more-health-problems-raw-or-dry-fed-dogs
Unfortunately, the entire system is rigged to ensure that little studies like these do not happen. Bar Helsinki University, no veterinary departments are interested in investigating, let alone publishing issues with products made by the sponsors of their department. It simply doesn't happen, clearly.
All we have is a small handful of studies in this regard, most of them produced by Dog Risk in Helsinki, and then people like me and RPM, Habib and Becker and all the AWESOME raw-feeding groups working tirelessly to help people new to the game, then take these studies and blast the results to the world. Because when vets and the public alike are shown the truth they are clearly smart enough to grasp it, as exploding sales in raw (and declining sales in dry) clearly show.
We can't wait for our captured institutions to protect us from the multinationals. We must take back control of science. This means doing it ourselves because the secret truth is science is very simple. It doesn't need the lofty brick-and-mortar university set-up. Far from it. There are numerous scientists out there who work outside of them - scientists like Vicky Adams, a highly published veterinary epidemiologist, who is governing this project. It means you can get stuff done quicker and significantly cheaper (50% of every research dollar to a university goes to admin, and much of the rest can be used to prop up the studies of their major benefactors), but it means instead of relying on industry cash, you need to appeal to the public for the truly worthy projects.
We will get this study done in 5 months, start to finish, but we have been given 30 days to raise the $48,500 in order to do it.
It's called citizen science folks - science for the people, by the people. Letโs take action. Let's take back a little control.
Let's get this done. Please donate and enjoy the warm feeling that you will get having given more dogs a chance at a healthier life (and that you stuck it to the man!).
IF YOU CAN'T DONATE...
Times are tough for many so promise me this, if you can't donate as little as a dollar, please share this post with your dog food manufacturer or pet shop and ask them to donate and share. Their business is thriving because of works like these. When this study comes out and we start screaming about it, their sales will improve. In essence, we are doing their marketing for them. I feel at least the manufacturers should be getting on board with this. They have more capital and will benefit the most financially from it. If and when they donate they can broadcast it from their social media platforms, showing us they truly care about the cause we care so passionately about. So please, whoever you buy your whole (raw/cooked) dog food from, email them this study and / or tag them in this post.

One of the questions I am often asked is why so many of our recipes contain vegetables. I should probably begin by explaining that all our formulas are complete and were created for us either by our own chief veterinary surgeon or by โguestโ veterinary nutritionists. When you take into account our bespoke recipes, we must have well over thirty options including food specially formulated for working dogs, overweight dogs, dogs with particular health issues and so forth. Some include vegetables, some donโt.
Our most popular formulas, however, are 66% meat and meaty bone and 33% seasonal vegetables. The meat is free range, pasture fed, certified organic or wild. It is fresh and if it wasnโt being used in our food you might expect to find it in a posh butcher. The vegetables are either grown for us โ without chemicals โ by a local farmer or, in the case of the organic vegetables, come from other farmers in the UK. In fact, all the ingredients are sourced from British producers.
There has been much debate over whether vegetables are a necessary part of a dogโs diet. The main argument against vegetables is that dogs are carnivores not omnivores and would barely eat any vegetable matter or fruit in the wild. I agree that dogs are carnivores, but they arenโt obligate carnivores and sometimes they definitely choose to eat vegetables and even fruit. To offer just one example, my late English pointer, Darling (much missed) used to pick her own blackberries (very delicately with her lips) and harvest her own carrots (which was extremely annoying). Moreover, canines eat the gut contents of their prey, which usually contains vegetation. They also scavenge vegetation, which includes herbs, vegetables and fruit.
Anyway, to my mind feeding vegetables to a dog can only be beneficial. Here are nine reasons why:
1. For dogs who need to come down a collar size or two they help make them feel full. Indeed, for all dogs the vegetables mean there is more food to eatโฆ something that most dogs appreciate!
2. Some organs (the heart, liver, pancreas, etc.) work better in a more alkaline environment and the same is true of some hormones. Vegetables help to balance the alkalinity and acidity. If thereโs too much acidity, it can lead to inflammation. And inflammation causes many chronic diseases.
3. Vegetables contain a wide array of nutrients โ especially phytonutrients โ that your dog needs. Phytonutrients are one of the most important kinds of nutrients you can give your dog ยฌยฌโ they kill cancer cells, reduce inflammation, promote gut health and support a healthy liver. But they are only found in fruits and vegetables. So if your dog only eats meat, he or she is missing out. Research published in the ๐ฝ๐๐ข๐๐๐๐ ๐๐ ๐ด๐๐๐๐๐ ๐โ๐ฆ๐ ๐๐๐๐๐๐ฆ ๐๐๐ ๐ด๐๐๐๐๐ ๐๐ข๐ก๐๐๐ก๐๐๐ found that phytonutrients could potentially benefit many aspects of dog health, concluding: โPhytonutrients possessing anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties may have notable roles in the prevention of chronic diseases, whose underlying development involves accumulated oxidative stress and chronic low-grade inflammation or altered immune function.โ
4. Vegetables help hydrate your dog.
5. Vegetables provide your dog with a host of vitamins including B vitamins, Vitamin C, Vitamin A, Vitamin E and Vitamin K.
6. Vegetables contain important minerals including calcium, potassium and magnesium.
7. Some vegetables are rich in enzymes, which can help with anti-aging.
8. Vegetables are packed full of antioxidants like lutein and beta-carotene. These help to protect your dog against unstable molecules called free radicals. Free radicals are a major cause of aging and disease.
9. Vegetables are high in fibre. Fibre passes through your dogโs intestines largely undigested. Once it reaches the colon, the bacteria living there ferment the fibre to create short chain fatty acids aka SCFAs. SCFAs are then used for energy, to build immune cells and protect the mucous lining in the gut. Fibre reduces cancer risk, has antioxidative properties, clears toxins and helps with gut health (more about which below).
Despite all the research, science still hasnโt discovered all the many ways in which food works to keep us healthy. Take something called fisetin, which is a natural plant compound (polyphenol) found in a variety of vegetables including strawberries and apples. Studies have found that fisetin reduces the effect of senescent aka โzombieโ cells. Zombie cells are cells that refuse to die but which hang around the body releasing chemicals that can be harmful to nearby cells, affecting cell survival and reparative potential. The build-up of these zombie cells promotes ageing and age-related conditions, including cardiovascular disease. When senior citizen mice are given fisetin their health life span improves dramatically.
There is hard research, too, showing that vegetables reduce the chances of cancer in dogs. A study involving Scottish Terriers, for example, found that feeding any type of vegetable at least three times a week produced a 70 percent reduced risk for developing transitional cell carcinoma, otherwise known as TCC, a type of cancer often found in the urinary bladder and urethra of older, smaller dogs. Feed green vegetables and you reduce that risk by 90%
There is still much work to be done about what a healthy dogโs biome looks like, but what we do know is that canine diets that exclude fresh vegetables result in considerably less healthy microbiomes.
Among the most important compounds plants provide are the polyphenols, flavonoids, and other phytonutrients. In multiple studies, adding polyphenols to the diet has been shown to significantly reduce markers of oxidative stress. Oxidative stress, to save you looking it up, reflects an imbalance between the systemic manifestation of reactive oxygen species and a biological system's ability to readily detoxify the reactive intermediates or to repair the resulting damage. What does it matter? It is suspected to play a huge (and not very positive) role in a wide range of diseases including strokes, heart attacks, age-related development of cancer, Alzheimerโs and more.
Some apiaceous vegetables (e.g., carrots, cilantro, parsnips, fennel, celery, parsley) contain polyacetylenes, an unusual class of organic compounds that has antibacterial, antifungal, and antimycobacterial benefits. They play a key role in detoxifying several cancer-causing substances, specifically mycotoxins (including aflatoxin B1).
I could go on about other beneficial things to be found in vegetables such as indole-3-carbinol, lutein, zeaxanthin, sulforaphanes and quercetin (considered natureโs Benadryl because it so good for dogs with allergies) but I feel I have made my point. Fresh vegetables canโt possibly do your dog any harm and there is plenty of evidence they will do him or her a great deal of good.

Corn and soybean based pet foods are not your friend!
"Both soy and corn are included in many popular commercial pet foods because they provide a cheap way for pet food manufacturers to boost the total protein content on the guaranteed analysis printed on the label."
Corn Gluten & Soybean Protein Can Upset GI and Cause Allergies I wouldn't touch these 2 proteins with a 10-foot pole, and I advise you to do the same for your pet's comfort and health. Not only are they cheap, low-quality proteins that food manufacturers love to stuff in their foods, they can impact your pet's development of lean tissue and body flab.

Did you know that kibble can go rancid?! ๐
THIS WEEK WE ARE TALKING ABOUT THE HAZARDS OF DRY PET FOOD - TODAY RANCID FAT:
A soon as a bag of kibble is opened, important dietary fats (e.g., omega-3 essential fatty acids) start to turn rancid. Because kibble is processed multiple times and at extremely high temperatures, effectively killing all the nutrition in the food, manufacturers assume the finished product is grossly nutritionally deficient. That's why the final production step involves spraying on a nutrient mix (and a palatability enhancer to make pets want to eat the stuff).
The sprayed-on synthetic nutrient mix typically contains cheap, feed-grade additives, vitamins and metal oxides and sulfates that can sped the oxidation of fats, ultimately resulting in rancid fats in a formula that may or may not be entirely safe to eat as little as a week after it was opened.

โ ๏ธ Get ready for some harsh truth
By my standards, optimal amount of ANIMAL protein in a dogโs diet is 75-85%. Cats are even more carnivorous and 90-95% of their diet should be ANIMAL protein.
Commercial dog food is only required to include 22% protein BUT this can include protein from plant matter that is not as digestible. A study brought to my attention by Dogs First showed of protein stated in the kibble, less than 75% of it was actually available to the animal. Krogdahl et al. (2004) tested a range of different dry food diets. They found that Eukanuba Puppy stated 27.9% protein, only 20.3% was actually available; Proplan Puppy stated 26.2% protein, only 20.1% was available to the test animals; Royal Canin Puppy stated 21.7% protein, only 16.7% was available; Hillโs Puppy stated 26.8% protein, only 20.8% was available to the animal.
Big pet food companies use less animal protein because itโs expensive and they want to make more money, but you physically canโt make an extruded kibble with 75% animal protein using current manufacturing and processing techniques. I took a kibble manufacturing course at KSU to learn the process myself.

SALT DOUGH ORNAMENTS ARE TOXIC TO DOGS
Not all dog-owners are aware of this danger. Often, families will make these ornaments as a holiday activity together, or they will come home from school with the kids. Some people make paw prints in salt dough as keepsakes.
They are made from flour, water, and lots of salt, and dogs may be tempted to eat them like a cookie. You think they taste terrible, but that does not stop some dogs from ingesting them. Same holds true for craft-dough which has a lot of salt too.
Best to keep them out of the home if you have pets, or, at least, way out of reach, but why take chances.
Excess salt intake in dogs results in vomiting within several hours of ingestion. There is great thirst and urination. The clinical signs of salt poisoning can progress to weakness, diarrhea, muscle tremors, seizures, coma. Depending on the size of the dog and the amount ingested, it can result in brain damage, organ failure, even death, or the heartbreaking decision to euthanize.
If ingested, contact a vet immediately; this could qualify as an emergency, and make sure to relay how much dough was eaten and that the vet clinic understands right off the hop that it was not a typical cookie or regular dough eaten, but salt dough with a high concentration of salt.
Be aware. Be safe.
Does processed pet food contain aflatoxins? It most certainly does. Economy brands tested higher than premium brands.
Aflatoxin Poisoning in Pets:
โAflatoxins are toxins produced by the mold Aspergillus flavus that can grow on pet food ingredients such as corn, peanuts, and other grains. At high levels, aflatoxins can cause liver damage, and death in pets. The toxins can be present even if there is no visible mold on the pet food.โ
โPets are highly susceptible to aflatoxin poisoning because, unlike people, who eat a varied diet, pets generally eat the same food continuously over extended periods of time. If a petโs food contains aflatoxins, the toxins could accumulate in the petโs system as they continue to eat the same food.โ

Did you know Turkey Tail Mushrooms have been studied for their cancer-fighting properties in dogs?
Research on turkey tail has shown to extend survival time in human patients with breast, stomach, and colorectal cancer; however, the most promising results have been seen in dogs with hemangiosarcoma.
The average survival time for dogs with hemangiosarcoma of the spleen is 86 days.
However, when a compound from Turkey Tail mushrooms was given to dogs with hemangiosarcoma, scientists at UPenn found they had a longer survival time, living beyond a year.
Whether you have a dog suffering from cancer or you're looking for an incredible cancer-preventative to add to your dog's diet plan, turkey tail mushrooms should MOST certainly be in the mix!

โWhy would it be โcriticalโ to โconvinceโ a pet owner to comply with a veterinarianโs pet food recommendation?
Perhaps it is because the AAHA pet food course โis generously supported by a grant from โPurina Pro Plan.โ

โCritical to Convince Pet Owners to Complyโ with Veterinarian Pet Food Recommendations Whatโs behind this strong-arm pet food stance from American Animal Hospital Association?
This graphic from the speaks volumes when it comes to our health/diet and that of our pets.
CARBOHYDRATES
In a small way, dogs did evolve to consume carbs. But that doesn't mean their diet should be made up of 40% or more carbs. Not even close.
Also, what carbs are we talking about? Vegetables, fruit, grains? And how/where are they grown and processed? And are they fed for fiber, antioxidants, and nutrients? Or as a way to decrease the animal protein in dog food or the cost of making dog food?
FAT
There is a belief that fat, any fat, is the leading cause of health issues in dogs.
I disagree. It's the oxidized and cooked fats that cause issues.
coconut oil and MCT oil, wild Alaskan salmon and fish oils, and oily fish (salmon, sardines, and mackerel) are great fats for our dogs.
MEAT
We're told to feed grass fed meats to our dogs. This is unattainable for many due to price and false advertising.
Companies are allowed to call their meat grass fed/grass finished even if their is also grain in the "finish" part.
Instead, I focus on sourcing from local farms, alternating proteins weekly, and feeding organic/grass fed/pasture raised when I can.
FINAL THOUGHTS
We all know that fresh food is better than processed food. But, sadly, highly processed foods are more affordable due to the low quality ingredients used.
We need to find a balance between making better choices for our dogs and not putting ourselves in the poor house or mental ward.
I do this by focusing on the dogs in front of me.
truer words have never been spoken ๐ถ
