๐ The move towards a cashless society is marginalizing groups such as the elderly, the poor, and the unbanked. Instances like an elderly couple being charged ยฃ110 by Ryanair for printing tickets highlight the challenges faced by those not fully plugged into modern systems. Car parks and ticket offices increasingly reject cash, leaving non-tech-savvy individuals at a disadvantage. The Good Things Foundation, a digital inclusion charity, emphasizes the forgotten digitally excluded population. The effects extend to the NHS, where improved digitalization can create efficiencies but leaves certain demographics behind. The cashless trend presents challenges for the unbanked, and the removal of cash infrastructure, like pay and display parking machines, exacerbates the issue. The government urges high street banks to provide access to cash machines, but there are still 1.3 million unbanked adults in the UK. The shift towards a cashless society prompts concerns, with some viewing it as a dystopia, particularly for those who lack understanding or means to access digital systems. Human interaction risks being undervalued in the digital landscape, and efforts should focus on ensuring inclusivity during the transition. ๐ธ๐ซ

๐ค China addresses its senior care crisis by turning to AI-enabled robots. With an aging population and a shortage of care workers, the country plans to deploy technology extensively. Predictions indicate the over-60 population will rise from 280 million in 2022 to 402 million by 2040, exacerbating the care worker shortage. China is actively promoting smart elderly care, with tech giants like iFlytek and Baidu focusing on senior care robots and smart displays. Although wearable devices are currently prevalent, robots are seen as the future of senior care, similar to Japan's model. Challenges include high robot prices, limited mass production, and inadequate funding. Chinese robotics startups, however, are working on solutions, and the market is expected to boom over the next decade. As demand spreads nationwide, companies offer leasing options to address financial constraints in nursing homes. The potential for growth in companion robots is noted, with robots providing companionship and assistance in daily activities. ๐ค

๐ค A recent survey reveals that over half of Millennials foresee AI and robotics playing a significant role in their elderly care, handling tasks from daily functions to companionship. While almost 70% would use AI tools to alert family or authorities in emergencies, two-thirds express a preference for exclusively human-based care. Nationwide is exploring "eldercare robots" for policyholders with mobility issues, testing their potential to prolong independent living. Respondents are open to AI assistance for daily functions (35%), companionship (32%), and sharing medical history (48%). AI and robotics could reshape long-term care, providing more opportunities for safe independence. ๐๐ค๐ก

Tech platform troubles: A Bloomberg Businessweek investigation into major elder care startup Papa reveals disturbing incidents logged by users and workers. Papa, aiming to combat loneliness among seniors through an app connecting them with independent contractors called "pals," faced over 1,000 complaints. Allegations include sexual harassment, assault, and theft. Critics argue that when dealing with eldercare via independent contractors, the safety bar is low compared to trained health workers. The incident highlights the challenges tech platforms face when dealing with real-world human interactions and raises questions about the role of technology in addressing issues like loneliness and elder care. ๐ค๐ต

๐ด๐ Embracing wearable tech isn't just for the fitness enthusiasts; it's proving to be a game-changer for seniors, offering benefits beyond workout stats. Studies show that wearables can enhance safety for seniors, particularly in fall detection. These devices, like Google's Pixel Watch, not only alert loved ones or emergency services but can distinguish between a fall and other activities. Additionally, wearables monitor vital signs such as heart rate variability (HRV) and blood oxygen levels, providing valuable insights into overall well-being. While wearables offer a plethora of health data, it's crucial for seniors to collaborate with healthcare professionals, ensuring a holistic approach to their well-being. Stay informed, stay active, and let technology contribute to a healthier senior lifestyle! ๐ด๐ช

Here the interview to Chiara, one of the italian youngsters, who volunteers with LโORMA, for the project VolunTECHing!
๐น'๐ข๐ฟ๐บ๐ฎโHi, we'd like to hear about your experience as a young volunteer who has taught groups of adults how to use a computer. How come you volunteered with us?โ
๐๐ต๐ถ๐ฎ๐ฟ๐ฎ: โWell, I've always been passionate about technology and the digital world. I believe that digital literacy is essential in today's society, and I wanted to contribute in a good way. When I learned about this volunteer opportunity, it felt like it was perfect for me. I saw it as a chance to bridge the generation gap and help older adults gain the skills they need to stay connected."
๐น'๐ข๐ฟ๐บ๐ฎ: โThat's wonderful. How was your experience teaching the elderly how to use a computer?โ
๐๐ต๐ถ๐ฎ๐ฟ๐ฎ: โIt was a truly rewarding experience. At the beginning, it was a bit challenging because many of the elderly participants were understandably apprehensive about technology. Some had never used a computer before. However, I could see their confidence growing. The joy and sense of accomplishment they felt when they have for the first time browsed the web or simply created a folder were heartwarming. Building those connections and witnessing their progress was incredibly fulfilling.
๐น'๐ข๐ฟ๐บ๐ฎ: What have you learned from your volunteering experience?
๐๐ต๐ถ๐ฎ๐ฟ๐ฎ: I've learned a lot from this experience. Patience and empathy were the most important lessons. Teaching computer skills to someone who didn't grow up with technology requires a lot of patience and understanding. It's easy to take our digital knowledge for granted, but this experience reminded me of how hard it can be for someone starting from scratch.
๐น'๐ข๐ฟ๐บ๐ฎ: That's an important lesson. Do you have any tips, tricks, or promoting quotes that you'd like to share for others who may be considering similar volunteer work?
๐๐ต๐ถ๐ฎ๐ฟ๐ฎ: Yes! First to be patient and understanding, you need to remember that the learning process is going to be slow, but every small step is a victory. Second, you need to adapt your approach to each individual's needs. Some might pick up quickly, while others need more time. Also use examples from day to day life: compare computer functions to real-life situations that the elderly individuals can connect with.โ

A South Florida teenager, Nicolas Jachtchenco, has launched a heartwarming initiative called Senior Tech Connect to assist seniors in his community. Realizing the need for older adults to adapt to technology, he embarked on a mission to help them. Through his community service project, he offers patient and personalized guidance on basic technology usage, understanding that many seniors have previously struggled with tech assistance. Jachtchenco's classes consist of 15 minutes of instruction followed by 25 minutes of hands-on support, and his impact has been remarkable. In just a year, he has taught nearly 800 seniors, earning their gratitude and admiration. His dedication and passion have made him a source of inspiration for his community and, most notably, for his mother, Angelique Suarez, who praises his drive to help others. Senior Tech Connect covers a range of topics, from using smart devices to cybersecurity and social media. It's a heartwarming example of youth making a meaningful difference in their community. ๐๐ฑ
