Free PaIestine. End the occupation. End the genocide. Ceasefire now. We are not free until Palestine is free.

We are interconnected. For those in the U.S. we are connected & living under the systems that are committing the horrific onslaught of violence we are seeing in Gaza, we have power to speak up, make change here that make change around the world. Now is not the time to look away...none of us are not free until Palestine is free.

The MakibekiNYC3 are three q***r, trans and femme activists who faced police brutality at the hands of the New York Police Department (NYPD) and Diplomatic Security Service (DSS). They were among the hundreds of activists who boldly protested the U.S. visit of Ferdinand Marcos Jr., a corrupt and fascist criminal whose family stole $10 billion from the Filipino people and committed gross human rights violations, including extrajudicial killings, disappearances, torture and r**e.

The MakibekiNYC3 were detained, and slapped with trumped up charges. While they have since been released and are seeking for the charges to be dropped, they will need ongoing support to cover legal fees, medical expenses and any loss of income. Proceeds will go to the MakibekiNYC3 Legal Fund under BAYAN USA.

“it is difficult to be a rememberer – living in the heart of the empire – when the status quo has people suffering from a collective cultural amnesia that keeps many ungrounded and easily misguided, but remembering, knowing, and understanding the truths of the past strengthens our ability to navigate, vision, and to create futures.

when we gather, tell stories, remember together, we tap into an already existing network of roots and mycelium. they show us what has existed, what has been done, how things may play out. if we remember, we won't fall into the same patterns – an unnecessary cycle – that our ancestors worked through so we wouldn’t have to.” -excerpt from an upcoming zine titled •consciousness rooting•

radical imaginings that our future generations will know our histories, our truths, and discern the reality of our present, so we may navigate these unknown waters 🌊 that lay ahead of us.

We are living amidst widespread and in the settler colonial U.S. – which keeps many ungrounded and easily misguided. We must end the harmful cycles of and that requires us to reflect and remember as we take action.

what memories & knowledge are within our bodies? how can we re-member the brilliance of our ancestors that was forced out of us in the the process of colonization? let's practice our traditions of storytelling, speak and re-call our truths with kapwa.

nicole gervacio will be leading the Pilipinx Consciousness Rooting circle to support her siblings of the diaspora. nicole is an interdisciplinary artist based on Ohlone territory called Huichin – what is commonly known as Oakland, California. Her roots originate from Luzon and the Visayan Islands across the Pacific. Her work is inspired by the body, memory, permanence versus impermanence, and is driven by the fear of forgetting.

Our Consciousness Rooting circles aim to inspire deep reflections, help us center through ongoing distractions & stresses, and support us as we face daily struggles & many frontlines.

Consciousness Raising is a practice that formally began in the freedom movements of the 1960s and 70s, with oppressed peoples circling up, sharing the conditions of their lives, drawing connections, and dedicating their precious time and energy to radical collective transformation. We look to these movement elders now. Their practices illuminate our path in these violent, deadly times. Join us to connect with others asking themselves these immense questions, as we collectively learn to navigate with dignity, humility, and solidarity.

A Filipino American History Month Reading List | Community of Literary Magazines and Presses 02/10/2020

happy filipino american history month! this awesome reading list includes the Pilipinx Radical Imagination Reader which features some of my paintings.

I created the portraits featured in PRIR right out of art school. I made a lot of terrible art and was lost, confused and assimilated. nearing the end of college, I found in the back of my parents closet black & white photos of my family in the philippines. up until that moment I had never seen historical photos of pilipinx people and i was incredibly intrigued by them and full of questions.

when I come back to these paintings, I can see how far i’ve come in the last decade. they mark the beginning of decolonization for me. it’s been constant searching, reading, remembering & connecting with other pilipinx americans, re-landing, re-rooting, un-learning & learning. this work & journey of healing has only begun, but it feels good to reflect on how I got here.

the Pilipinx Radical Imagination Reader covers a spectrum of topics including identity, sexuality, anti-blackness, whiteness, mixed heritage, diaspora, the hood, cooking, and foodways.
