What are some really great movies that don’t get the credit that they deserve?

Enemy Mine from 1985 is an often-overlooked film that was based on a short story-turned-novella by Barry B. Longyear. Said story was the first part of his Enemy Papers series and set in the Manifest Destiny universe. The story is one of human fighter pilot Major Willis Davidge who crashes on the planet Fyrene IV and has to survive alongside the alien who shot him down, Jeriba Shigan (pictured above). The two start out hating each other’s guts only to end up close friends. Eventually, many other plot twists arise. The film and book alike have great moral messages about overcoming differences and the film, in particular, was nominated for the soundtrack and special effects (practical while also ahead of the time) despite the film flopping at the box office. The effects alone should give it a place in film history. It would still develop a strong cult following thanks to video rentals and sci-fi convention word-of-mouth. It still stands strong today for those who have seen it and holds a place in my heart as one of the first films I remember watching start-to-finish as a kid. Highly recommended for any sci-fi aficionado or anyone who enjoys hidden gems. The actual book series is also recommended.
