The Wailers express their deep sorrow over the passing of Benjamin Zephaniah, a celebrated poet, musician, and activist. Although many current members did not personally know him, they honor his significant impact on music and social justice. Zephaniah's collaboration with the Wailers in the 1980s, especially on the 'Rasta' album, is a cherished part of their history, highlighting his talent and commitment to social issues, including a tribute to Nelson Mandela. His role in the 1996 Two Nations Concert, requested by Mandela, underscores his influence and dedication to positive change. The Wailers extend condolences to his loved ones and acknowledge his global influence, confident that his legacy will continue to inspire future generations. 🕊️

RIP BERNIE PITTERS
Sad news reaches us that Canadian Reggae legend Bernie Pitters has passed away.

He was born in Birmingham, England, and moved to Jamaica when he was eight years old.

Bernie learned to play the keyboard when he was a student at Excelsior High School. His classmate Earl ‘Wyre’ Lindo, who went on to play with Bob Marley and the Wailers, taught him how to play the instrument. After he finished high school, Bernie became a member of the Super Fenders Band and later joined the Otravis Band, which eventually came to Canada on tour.

Bernie Pitters visited Canada in 1976 and fell in love with the country. There was a lot of employment for him as a musician and possessing a British passport made things easier for him.

When he arrived in Canada, the reggae community was small, and he eventually became one of the architects in creating the Canadian reggae scene.

KENYA 60 TODAY

This is a milestone in the history of Kenya. Sixty years ago she gained her independence, spearheaded by the “Burning Spear” himself: Jomo Kenyatta.

Kenya was the only country to have gained independence that year, in 1963. Steel Pulse salutes this Eastern African country for sustaining herself and for the fallen freedom fighters that, as a small axe, chopped away at the big tree.

Our respect once again to the most re known freedom fighter of them all Dedan Kimathi, whose wife, Mukami recently passed away, aged 96. It’s been exactly a year since my first visit to Kenya. And I’m longing to return. In the meantime, enjoy your 60th year of independence and may prosperity prevail throughout the land..
