Bell’s palsy

🔵 What is Bell’s Palsy?

Bell’s palsy is a condition that causes a temporary weakness or paralysis of the muscles in the face. It can occur when the nerve that controls your facial muscles becomes inflamed, swollen, or compressed.

The condition causes one side of your face to droop or become stiff. You may have difficulty smiling or closing your eye on the affected side. In most cases, Bell’s palsy is temporary and symptoms usually go away after a few weeks.

Although Bell’s palsy can occur at any age, the condition is more common among people between ages 16 and 60. Bell’s palsy is named after the Scottish anatomist Charles Bell, who was the first to describe the condition.

🔵 What are the symptoms of Bell’s Palsy?

🔹 The symptoms of Bell’s palsy can develop one to two weeks after you have a cold, ear infection or eye infection. They usually appear abruptly, and you may notice them when you wake up in the morning or when you try to eat or drink. Bell’s palsy is marked by a droopy appearance on one side of the face and the inability to open or close your eye on the affected side. In rare cases, Bell’s palsy may affect both sides of your face.

🔵 Other signs and symptoms of Bell’s palsy include:

◻️ Drooling
◻️ Difficulty eating and drinking
◻️ An inability to make facial expressions, such as smiling or frowning
◻️ An inability to make facial expressions, such as smiling or frowning
◻️ Facial weakness
◻️ Muscle twitches in the face
◻️ Dry eye and mouth
◻️ Headache
◻️ Sensitivity to sound
◻️ Irritation of the eye on the involved side

🔵 What causes Bell’s palsy?

🔸 The cause of Bell's palsy is not known. It is thought that it may be due to inflammation that is directed by the body's immune system against the nerve controlling movement of the face.

🔵 Bell's palsy is sometimes associated with the following:

🔸 Diabetes
🔸 High blood pressure
🔸 Injury
🔸 Toxins
🔸 Lyme disease
🔸 Guillain-Barré syndrome
🔸 Sarcoidosis
🔸 Myasthenia gravis
🔸 Multiple sclerosis
🔸 Infection, especially following a viral infection with Herpes simplex virus (a virus that is related to the cause of the common "cold sores" of the mouth)

🔵 What are the complications of Bell’s palsy?

◼️ Most people who have an episode of Bell’s palsy will completely recover without complications. However, complications may occur in more severe cases of Bell’s palsy.

◼️ These include the following:

◼️ You may have damage to the seventh cranial nerve. This nerve controls your facial muscles.
◼️ You may have excessive dryness in the eye, which can lead to eye infections, ulcers, or even blindness.
◼️ You may have synkinesis, which is a condition in which moving one body part causes another to move involuntarily. For example, your eye may close when you smile.

🔵 How is Bell’s palsy treated?

🔶 Medications

🔸 Corticosteroid drugs, which reduce inflammation
🔸 Antiviral or antibacterial medication, which may be prescribed if a virus or bacteria caused your Bell’s palsy
🔸 Over-the-counter pain medications, such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen, which can help relieve mild pain
🔸 Eye drops

🔶 Home treatment

🔸 An eye patch (for your dry eye)
🔸 A warm, moist towel over your face to relieve pain
🔸 Facial massage
🔸 Physical therapy exercises to stimulate your facial muscles

DEVELOPMENTAL DELAY | DELAYED MILESTONE

A developmental delay refers to a child who has not gained the developmental skills expected of him or her, compared to others of the same age. Delays may occur in the areas of motor function, speech and language, cognitive, play, and social skills. Global developmental delay means a young child has significant delays in two or more of these areas of development.

Developmental milestones are a set of functional skills or age-specific tasks that most children can do at a certain age range. Your pediatrician uses milestones to help check how your child is developing. Although each milestone has an age level, the actual age when a normally developing child reaches that milestone can vary quite a bit. Every child is unique!

Child development refers to how a child becomes able to do more complex things as they get older. Development is different than growth. Growth only refers to the child getting bigger in size. When we talk about normal development, we are talking about developing skills like:

1. Gross motor skills: using large groups of muscles to sit, stand, walk, run, etc., keeping balance and changing positions.

2. Fine motor skills: using hands to be able to eat, draw, dress, play, write, and do many other things

3. Language skills: speaking, using body language and gestures, communicating, and understanding what others say.

4. Cognitive skills: thinking skills including learning, understanding, problem-solving, reasoning, and remembering

5. Social skills: interacting with others, having relationships with family, friends, and teachers, cooperating and responding to the feelings of others.

For some reasons, may kids will have delay in achieving most of these milestones in life and this becomes very obvious if they are compared with the milestones achieved by age mates or peers.

There is not one cause for delays in development. Factors that may contribute can occur before a child is born, during the birth process, and after birth. These could include:

•Genetic or hereditary conditions like Down syndrome
•Metabolic disorders like phenylketonuria (PKU)
•Trauma to the brain, such as shaken baby syndrome
•Severe psychosocial trauma, such as post-traumatic stress disorder
•Exposure to certain toxic substances like prenatal alcohol exposure or lead poisoning
•Some very serious infections
•Deprivation of food or environment

In some cases, it may not be possible to find the cause of the developmental delay.

There are many different signs and symptoms of delay that can exist in children and often vary depending upon specific characteristics. Sometimes you may see signs in infancy, but in other cases they may not be noticeable until your child reaches school age. Some of the most common symptoms can include:

1. Learning and developing more slowly than other children same age
2. Rolling over, sitting up, crawling, or walking much later than developmentally appropriate
3. Difficulty communicating or socializing with others
4. Lower than average scores on IQ tests
5. Difficulties talking or talking late
6. Having problems remembering things
7. Inability to connect actions with consequences
8. Difficulty with problem-solving or logical thinking
9. Trouble learning in school
10. Inability to do everyday tasks like getting dressed or using the restroom without help

If there is an underlying medical reason that causes the developmental delay, identification and treatment of that condition may improve your child’s developmental skills.

Therapies for Developmental Delays
Although there is no cure for developmental delay, therapies directed to the specific area of delay are very effective in helping children catch up to their peers. These types of therapies may include but not limited to;

Physical Therapy:
Physical therapy is often helpful for children with delays in gross motor skills.

Occupational Therapy:
This can addresses fine motor skills, sensory processing and self-help issues.

Speech and Language Therapy:
Speech therapy is typically used to address problems in the areas of understanding and producing language and speech sounds.

Early Childhood Special Education:
Early childhood special education provides stimulation for early developmental skills, including play skills.

Behavioral therapy:
This may be needed in some children for behavioral difficulties that affect socially appropriate behaviors.

Meet me in my next post as I share with you some of the milestones. Knowing these will help first time parents to make an early notice if their ward is having delay milestones. Milestones come with ages they are supposed to be occurring and so being conversant with these ages and the specific skills to achieve will help for early diagnosis. Stay tuned!

*Definition of frozen shoulder*

Frozen shoulder is the common name for adhesive capsulitis, which is a shoulder condition that limits your range of motion. When the tissues in your shoulder joint become thicker and tighter, scar tissue develops over time. As a result, your shoulder joint doesn't have enough space to rotate properly

*symptoms of frozen shoulder*

The main symptoms of a frozen shoulder are pain and stiffness that make it difficult or impossible to move it. If you have frozen shoulder, you'll likely feel a dull or achy pain in one shoulder. You might also feel the pain in the shoulder muscles that wrap around the top of your arm.

*causes of frozen shoulder*

One of the most common causes of frozen shoulder is the immobility that may result during recovery from a shoulder injury, broken arm or a stroke. If you've had an injury that makes it difficult to move your shoulder than it may cause frozen shoulder

Let’s know about Cerebral Palsy

🔵 What is Cerebral Palsy?

Cerebral palsy is the most common neurological disorder seen in childhood. It is a group of permanent disorders of the development of the movement and posture due to damage to the brain or abnormalities inside the brain which cause lifetime activity limitation. Simply it means loss or impairment of motor functions because of a problem occurred in the brain.

Cerebral palsy damage the outer area of the brain (cerebral cortex) which control the muscle movements. This damage may happen because the cortex hasn’t developed normally during fetal growth or it may be due to injury to the brain either before, during or after birth. This damage is not repairable so the disabilities that result are permanent.

Cerebral palsy can affect the whole body or it may be one side of the body or sometimes primarily one limb of the body.

🔵 Children with cerebral palsy present a wide range of symptoms.

▪️ Lack of muscle coordination when performing voluntary movements.
▪️ Stiff or tight muscles and exaggerated reflexes.
▪️ Weakness in one or more arm or leg
Gait variations like walking on toes, a crouched gait, or a ‘sissored’ gait (gait with knee crossing) or an asymmetrical gait.
▪️ Variations in muscle tone (either too stiff or too floppy).
▪️ Shaking or random involuntary movement
Delays in reaching motor milestones such as sitting up or crawling.
▪️ Difficulty in fine movements like writing or buttoning.
▪️ Problems with swallowing.

Those symptoms and the severity of the symptoms vary greatly from child to another depending on the part of the brain affected, but every child with cerebral palsy has problems with movement and posture. Symptoms may even change in an individual over time. When a child gets older, some symptoms become more or less apparent. Especially muscle shortening and muscle rigidity can worsen if not treated.

🔴 What are the early signs of cerebral palsy?

Early signs of cerebral palsy usually appear in the early months of life but may not diagnosed until age 2 or later.

These children have a developmental delay in which they are slow to reach developmental milestones such as learning to roll over, sit, crawl or walk. Infants with cerebral palsy have abnormal muscle tone. Increased muscle tone (hypertonia) make them seem stiff and decreased muscle tone (hypotonia) make them appear relaxed. In some cases, hypotonia may progress to hypertonia after first 2, 3 months. Children with cerebral palsy also have unusual posture or favour one side of the body, such as reaching with one hand or dragging leg while crawling.

🔘 Some early warning signs:

🔺 In a baby younger than 6 months age-

▪️ Head lags when you are trying to lift the baby from lying on the back.
▪️ Baby feels too stiff or feels floppy.
▪️ Legs get stiff and they cross or scissor when you pick up the baby.

🔺 In a baby older than 6 months age

▪️ Baby doesn’t roll over in either direction.
▪️ Baby can’t bring hands together and difficulty in bringing a hand to mouth.
▪️ Baby reaches out with only one hand while keeping the other fi**ed.

🔺 In a baby older than 10 months.

▪️ Baby crawls in a lopsided manner, pushing off with one hand and leg while dragging the opposite hand and leg.
▪️ Baby can’t stand holding onto the support
If you notice any of these signs in your baby, you should seek medical advice.

🔶 Even though cerebral palsy can’t be cured, proper management can deal with symptoms, prevent problems and make the most of the child’s abilities. Physiotherapy is one of the most important treatments in managing a child with cerebral palsy. Medicines, surgeries, special equipment such as walkers, the orthosis can also help.

Physiotherapy management help to increase a child’s strength, flexibility, motor development, mobility and restore physical, psychological and social wellbeing of the child.
