Remembering Elaine King (Bohun) 27/03/2023

Dear All,

I'm so sorry to have to let you know that Elaine passed away on Saturday morning having been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer last year.

David has organised a Just Giving page to raise money for the hospice where Elaine spent her last days, and where people who knew her can share memories and condolences - www.justgiving.com/fundraising/rememberelaine

Please feel free to leave any memories or thoughts in the comments.

Very best wishes,

Kevin

Dear All,

No need to worry, but the concert has been postponed until Sunday 12th December due to Dave and Elaine testing positive for Covid - they're both absolutely fine, with minimal symptoms, but will be in isolation through the weekend.

If that means there are more players who are now free to play, please get in contact ([email protected]) and I'll let you know if there's space in the section.

Many thanks,

Kevin

Thank you for the quite staggering responses from alumni players to bulk up the band for the 20th Nov Concert.

We're now pretty much full up, but would really like 1 or 2 more french horns. Could also squeeze in another clarinet or two, but horns are a must.

Many thanks

Hi All,

It's just over a month until Dave and Elaine's special concert.

The two best presents we can give them are a full band and a sold-out audience...
Therefore, if anyone is able to share and promote the concert, that would be greatly appreciated.
We still need another couple of horns and trombones, and could definitely make space for another flute, a couple of clarinets and a tuba. Please get in touch at [email protected] if you're interested.

Many thanks,
Kevin

Hi All,

We could still use a couple of extra horns, bassoons, trombones and clarinets for the concert on 20th November, if anybody would like to join us for Dave and Elaine's farewell concert?
Email me at [email protected] if you're interested :)

Southampton Wind Band Gala Concert | Thornden Hall 20/09/2021

Hi All,
Dave and Elaine's farewell concert will be taking place at Thornden Hall on Saturday 20th November 2021, 7.30pm. The concert (about 60mins) will be followed by a drinks reception where you will have an opportunity to pass on your personal thanks and wishes to them both.
Dave will be conducting the final few pieces of the performance, and it would be fantastic to have a full band for this. If anybody is interested in playing for the concert, please email me ([email protected]), and I will get back to you to let you know if there will be space for you to play - if not, it will be fantastic to have you as part of the audience, which I hope will sell-out.

I'm also trying to get together a scrap book of the years D&E were with SWB, so any photos of rehearsals/tours/concerts etc can be sent to the above email - ideally with some indication of the year/venue (if know).

Tickets for the concert can be booked at:
https://www.thorndenhall.co.uk/whats-on/southampton-wind-band-gala-concert

Look forward to seeing you all in November!

Kevin

Hi All,

One of our wonderful young clarinettists is raising money for Macmillan Cancer Research in memory of Steph Watkins, and will be 'Braving the Shave' later on this month.

It's a fantastic thing to do, for a great cause and in memory of a wonderful person - please have a look at her page, and give something if you're able.

Hi All,

As some of you will know by now, Steph Watkins very sadly lost her battle with cancer earlier this month.
We know that many of you were taught by her or came up through Airplay under her kind and ever-patient expertise, so Southampton Music Service thought that you may appreciate the chance to put some memories and messages into our book of condolence which will be sent to Steph's family at the end of April - www.tolbc.com/StephWatkins

Kindest regards to all of you, and most sincere condolences to those who were close to Steph over the years - and as we step ever closer to the possibility of finally staging a farewell concert for Dave and Elaine, we will keep you all posted,

Kevin

Dave and Elaine Retiring Collection for Dave and Elaine

30/06/2020

Hi All,

Following on from my message a few weeks ago - I'd like to put together a scrap book of SWB over the last 36 years.
If anybody has any photos of SWB concerts/tours etc, it would be amazing to have a copy - along with a rough idea of when and where the photo was taken.

Many thanks,

Kevin

06/06/2020

Does anybody have old photos of the band? Concerts, tours, anything like that?

04/06/2020

Please share and invite :)

04/06/2020

Hi All,

After 36 years, Dave King has decided to hang up his baton, and Elaine will be putting her wheelie suitcase of paperwork into the attic. Sadly, in the current climate, they haven't been able to have a farewell concert - but we will be making sure that past and current band members get a chance to thank them properly for the quite incredible commitment they have made to so many of us over so many years.

If you are in contact with Dave and Elaine, please don't mention this yet.

In the meantime, Southampton Music Service have set up a fund towards a retirement gift. Wouldn't it be wonderful if we can really show them how much they've meant to us...
www.paypal.com/pools/c/8pHjx1zhV4

Finally, please invite anyone and everyone you can think of who's ever had anything to do with SWB over the last 36 years - I will be using this to keep everybody updated with any plans for a big farewell concert as and when we're able.

Much SWB love to 3 decades-worth of alumni,

Kevin Withell
Assistant Director of SWB
