Remembering Igor Stravinsky:
June 17, 1882 – April 6, 1971
Igor Stravinsky was a Russian composer, pianist, and conductor. He is widely considered one of the most important and influential composers of the 20th century. Stravinksy played an important role inspiring Charlie Parker’s approach and style to music.

I am hoping you will share this post with your friends to help me raise money for my youngest daughter's first mission trip!
I'm offering to new students only (or to those who haven't had a lesson with me in at least six months) the opportunity for one half hour private lesson with me for a donation to her mission trip to the Baja Penninsula of Mexico. She will be going with King's Kids to build a house for an extremely poor family during the day and doing ministry programs at night. I'm excited about this opportunity for her, and I appreciate your support and your prayers. (If you know me, you know there's nothing in this world more important to me than my family!)

George Gershwin - Rhapsody in Blue
George Gershwin was born September 26th, 1898 and is known for "Rhaspsody in Blue"; the groundbreaking Opera "Porgy and Bess," and over 800 songs- gems such as "Summertime", "A Foggy Day", "S'Wonderful", "Someone To Watch Over Me" and "They Can't Take That Away From Me". He wrote pioneering music that sought to combine the best elements of the European Romantic Tradition with the newly minted forms of ragtime, jazz, and the blues. He was an original and unique composer with a wonderful gift for melody. Gershwin, though very gifted, felt he had technical shortcomings compared to established classical composers. One story had him asking Stravinsky for lessons in the 1930's, and Stravinsky, by way of reply, asked Gershwin how much money he earned in a year. "About 250,000 dollars" came the answer, whereupon Stravinsky said "I should take lessons from you!'.

Charlie Parker with Strings - Just Friends
Charlie (Bird) Parker was born on August 29th, 1920 in Kansas City, MO. He is remembered as one of the greatest improvisers in Jazz and one of the architects of Bebop- a style of Jazz characterized by furious tempos and advanced chord substitutions. He once told a journalist that he discovered one of the stepping stones of his style when he was playing "Cherokee" in a nightclub in 1939 and discovered he could use the chromatic scale to launch into any key or harmony. Miles Davis once said that the history of Jazz could be summed up in 4 words: Louie Armstrong Charlie Parker. One of my favorite Parker tracks is his take of "Just Friends" on the "Parker with Strings" Album. His solo is forever melodic, astounding, and fresh sounding! Bird lives indeed!
