Research has shown that when someone experiencing trauma feels supported at the beginning, it can drastically reduce the impact over time.

Hailey is an OB tech & Bereavement Coordinator. She shared with me such a wonderful perspective on pregnancy loss.
"Caring for families grieving the loss of a baby can be feel overwhelming, but I don’t know a single L&D nurse/ tech who wouldn’t say it is the greatest honor of their career. One thing I always make sure to do is ask if I can hold their baby. Something so simple & so meaningful to these moms. Every family I serve teaches me something new, & I want them to know I carry their sweet babies with me to better serve every family I come across. They mattered & will be remembered."

What not to say to a pregnancy loss patient...
Using the correct language can play an enormous role to take the pressure off you and help the patient feel heard, understood, and supported.
We all want more than anything to feel heard and understood. A good way to help your patient feel heard is simply providing the opportunity for them to share.

Don’t be afraid to ask parents if they chose a name for their baby. Use the name they picked out when referring to their baby. If it’s too early in the pregnancy or they didn’t choose one, use “baby” instead of “it” or “fetus”.
