Cleary expresses emotional toll of star’s Tiger Town move
Cleary will need a new halves partner in 2025.
Nathan Cleary has opened up about the emotional toll that his partner in crime Jarome Luai's departure has had on him since he signed a five-year deal with the Tigers in 2025.
Cleary spoke to the Sydney Morning Herald where he expressed his sadness about Luai's decision to leave. The pair have been long-term halve partners and have played together since they were 15 years old, but have more recently won three premierships and played in four grand finals alongisde one another.
“I've played alongside ‘Romy' my whole Penrith career, since we were 15 years old, which makes it even tougher,” Cleary told the publication.
“It's sad. It's also a business, and he needs to look after his beautiful young family. He had so many people in his ear asking him what he was going to do, so I didn't want to be that guy asking.
“He's also at that stage of his career where he can make decisions for himself. We all found out at the same time that he was leaving.
“I never could have pictured Romy in another jersey. Now he's secured his future, we can focus on this year and try to make it special ... it's my last ride with him.”
Cleary though mentions he is confident that Luai position can be replaced due to the depth in their squad at the Panthers.
“It's a fair squad we've lost over the years now,” Cleary said.
“I've played the longest with Romy, we're in the halves together, so that makes it tougher. He really represents what we're about as a team, and he's from the area.
“The more players leave, the more you become accustomed to it.
“I feel I'm at the age and the stage of my career where I'm ready to actually help a young guy and build a combination."

OFFICIAL: Nofoaluma’s Tigers time over as contract terminated
The winger’s contract has been ended
Veteran winger David Nofoaluma has played his last game for the Tigers after reportedly being served agreeing to a severance with the club.
The club officially announced his contract had been terminated on Tuesday evening.
"Wests Tigers has today released winger David Nofoaluma from the remaining two years of his playing contract," the club wrote in a statement.
"The club and player have agreed to terminate the contract by mutual consent, effective immediately.
"Interim CEO Shane Richardson has thanked Nofoaluma for his services to Wests Tigers.
“We thank David for all that he has given to this club over the past decade,” said Richardson.
“We wish David all the very best with his future.”
The Tigers, who have entered a new era in 2024 and have been heavily active in signing players and potentially releasing others as they look for a full roster rebuild under Benji Marshall, are chasing a finals berth for the first time in more than a decade this season.
The back-to-back wooden spooners, who head into 2024 with an entirely new board after Justin Pascoe and Lee Hagipantelis were relieved of their duties at the back-end of 2023 following a review into the club's operations, have been at war with their veteran winger for some time.
A The Sydney Morning Herald report suggests the severance package agreed too between the parties is in the realms of $300,000.
Despite having a distinguished career where he has scored 100 games in 192 games for the Tigers, Nofoaluma, who was also loaned out at the end of 2022 for a brief period to the Melbourne Storm, was reportedly told by new coach Benji Marshall that he wouldn't play first-grade again at the Tigers late last year.

IS THIS THE END OF NRL PLAY MAKER?
Dolphins playmaker Anthony Milford has reportedly left the club's stadium after sustaining a leg injury during pre-season training.
Journalist Ted Roker from 10 News First Queensland has reported that Milford left the club's training session with an injury. At the same time, recruit Jake Averillo and veteran Jesse Bromwichdidn't train with the core group of players.
Struggling to cement a position in The Dolphins team last season due to a poor attitude, the injury could be the final straw with the club as he is already playing second-fiddle to Isaiya Katoa and Sean O'Sullivan.
Although he played mainly off the interchange in his 11 NRL games this season, Milford managed to score three tries, force five dropouts, and provide five try assists and five line breaks, showing moments of brilliance.
However, he was recently linked with a release to the Leigh Leopards in the Super League, where he could have partnered with Lachlan
Lam before the move fell through.
The club has yet to confirm the injury, and it is unknown how serious the leg injury could be or how long he will be out for.
The Wallabies have their new coach.

Hunters join Dolphins for pre-season to continue development agreement
Author Dolphins Media
Two players from Hostplus Cup club the PNG Hunters will gain the benefits of an NRL pre-season training with the Dolphins as part of an already-successful development agreement.
Judah Rimbu and Epel Kapinias are currently immersed in full-time pre-season training with the full Dolphins squad as they continue preparations for the 2024 NRL season.
This collaboration is an integral part of the strategic partnership between the SP PNG Hunters and the Dolphins, with the overarching goal of facilitating the entry of more local players from Papua New Guinea into the NRL Competition.
Under the guidance of Dolphins’ Head Coach Wayne Bennett, Rimbu and Kapinias commenced their first week of eight weeks of pre-season, as they diligently work towards securing a full-time NRL contract.
Both players showcased exceptional skills during outstanding performances for the Kumuls in the Pacific Championships last year, with this opportunity a well-deserved reward for their efforts.
Notably, this marks Rimbu’s second stint in the pre-season with the Dolphins while Kapinias is getting his first opportunity.
SP PNG Hunters CEO Scott Barker said this was a huge chance for the two players.
“I am genuinely pleased to continue our strategic pathway partnership with the Dolphins’ NRL franchise,” said Barker.
“This platform once again allows our players to demonstrate their talents within an NRL system, playing a crucial role in the broader PNG Rugby League eco-system.
“We witnessed the direct benefits last year when former Hunters’ centre Rodrick Tai received multiple offers after emerging from this pathway.”
Bennett is also very supportive of presenting opportunities to the international players.
