America’s Amazon
"Hidden away in the heart of the Deep South, one of the nation’s greatest wildernesses is being destroyed, bit by bit, in a silent massacre.
There are more species of oaks on a single hillside on the banks of the Alabama River than you can find anywhere else in the world. The Mobile River Basin makes Alabama home to more species of freshwater fish, mussels, snails, turtles and crawfish than any other state. The contest isn’t even close.
For instance, Alabama is home to 97 crawfish species, while California, three times the size of Alabama, has but nine. There are 450 species of freshwater fish in the state, or about one-third of all species known in the entire nation. The system’s turtle population is even more singular. The Mobile-Tensaw Delta estuary system has 18 turtle species, more than any other river delta system in the world — more than the Amazon and more than the Mekong, both extraordinarily biodiverse ecosystems.
You won’t find people chaining themselves to trees to protect this place, or national environmental groups using pictures of it to sign up new members, because few know it exists. And yet, here it is — the Mobile River Basin, one of the richest in the world in terms of the sheer number of species and types of habitat. The major rivers and thousands of creeks feeding into this basin together form the largest inland delta system in the United States, second only to the Mississippi in how much water it dumps into the Gulf of Mexico.
The river system, the fourth-largest in the country in terms of water flow, stretches from the northern edge of Alabama to the Gulf, draining parts of four states, and encompassing hundreds of thousands of acres of forest, from Appalachian hardwood stands to haunted cypress swamps. A dedicated band of locals know it for the incredible hunting and fishing it affords. But few know it for its greatest distinction. That’s a shame, for this is America’s Amazon, far and away the most biodiverse river network in North America."

What an incredible day yesterday was! I the opportunity to tour an incredible group of women from Chattanooga, TN. We began with a Collage making “Meet & Greet” to settle in before the tour began the next day. We were welcomed into the Jackson Home where Martin Luther King, Jr lived for 6 months during the Voting Rights Campaign, welcomed by into her space By the River Center for Humanity, picked up lunch which we ate with at the BridgeTenders House her Airbnb and art studio/gallery and welcomed us to his studio too!
We went many other places but I was not so camera ready for those.
It was such a blessing to me to get to show a group of women Selma, AL thru my lens! Thank You SO MUCH Margaret Green for pulling your group together and bringing them to Selma!

My first bus tour since covid! Such a Lovely group from Illinois taking in the Sacred and Holy Ground of the Civil and Voting Rights. So grateful for them spending time with me and look forward to them all coming back with their families to stay a few days longer. SO SO VERY MUCH to take in in Selma and the Black Belt of Alabama.
Black Belt Black History—Dallas County
Bloody Sunday is perhaps the best documented of the three Selma to Montgomery Marches. On March 7, 1965, hundreds of civil rights protestors met on the Edmund Pettus Bridge to march from the Queen City to the state capitol. The participants were met by violent police and civilian opposition at the foot of the bridge, called by the county sheriff to halt their progress. Seventeen unarmed marchers were hospitalized, including a young Rep. John Lewis who was left with a skull fracture. Around 50 more were treated for more minor injuries. The day is considered a turning point for the national Civil Rights Movement because of its visibility in Washington. The Voting Rights Act of 1965 was passed later that summer, thanks to the immeasurable sacrifices of those that participated in the three marches.
The Edmund Pettus Bridge, named after a prominent K*K leader and former senator, has become an icon for the Movement. It's also a great vantage point for viewing birds over the Alabama River, like the scissor-tailed flycatcher. However, the importance of embracing the history while you observe can’t be understated. As Rep. Lewis once said in a joint editorial with Rep. Terri Sewell regarding their opposition to renaming the bridge, “We must tell our story fully rather than hide the chapters we wish did not exist for without adversity there can be no redemption.”
If you love cultural and natural history, a visit to Dallas County is the perfect thing for you. Check out AC Selma Sampler Tour and her TourSelma mobile app for a guided tour around the city. Visit Old Cahawba in Orrville for historic relics, a nature trail, canoe access to the Alabama River, and remnants of Black Belt prairie for more varied .
Join us next Friday as we end our Black Belt Black History series with a spotlight on Marengo County.
