Daily Word Problems- 3/19
1st Grade-
Tom has 4 red cars and 3 green cars. Dave has 5 red cars and 2 green cars. Dave thinks he has more cars than Tom has. Is Dave right?
2nd Grade-
With one push, Brian’s toy car traveled 40 centimeters across the rug. When pushed across a hardwood floor, it traveled 95 centimeters. How many more centimeters did the car travel on the hardwood floor than across the rug?
1st- Dora found 5 leaves that blew in through the window. Then she found 2 more leaves that blew in. Draw a picture and use numbers to show how many leaves Dora found in all.

Parents, I will be logging on shortly to show how to solve the two word problems for the day. In the meantime, I'd like to share the strategy I use when teaching how to solve word problems. This is the strategy I will be teaching over the next few weeks. It is taken from the Eureka math curriculum. If your child has been taught Eureka math this school year, chances are that this strategy will be familiar. See you all in a little bit!
Word problems for 3/18:
1st Grade:
Dora found 5 leaves that blew in through the window. Then she found 2 more leaves that blew in. Draw a picture and use numbers to show how many leaves Dora found in all.

2nd Grade:
Emma has 45 pencils. Eight pencils are sharpened. How many pencils are not sharpened?

I teach my students these key words when solving word problems. I have this as a job in my Montessori classroom. You can make this for your child! Print each picture (or write the words on index cards) and have your child practice sorting the key words under the correct heading!
