Hope everyone is staying safe! This is concerning with the resurgence of cases. More patients in their 20s, 30s and 40s are symptomatic enough to seek testing and even some are requiring hospitalization. While the chances of hospitalization and death are much lower for those under 50, younger individuals are not invincible or immune to this novel virus.
Individuals with a Body Mass Index, BMI, greater than 30 and/or pre-existing conditions are at an increased risk, even when younger.
Stay safe out there and feel free to ask any questions!

As virus surges, younger people account for “disturbing” number of cases — The New York Times People in their 20s, 30s and 40s account for a growing proportion of the cases in many places, raising fears that asymptomatic young people are helping to fuel the virus’s spread.

This has to stop! Great article briefly covering surprise medical billing. It also gives a glimpse behind the scenes to how private health companies maintain profitability while decreasing pay of the health care providers!
How rich investors, not doctors, profit from marking up ER bills — ProPublica TeamHealth, a medical staffing firm owned by private-equity giant Blackstone, charges multiples more than the cost of ER care. All the money left over after covering costs goes to the company, not the doctors who treated the patients.
It has been a little time since my last post, work has been pretty busy lately!
Interesting read demonstrating the pay disparity between CEOs and healthcare workers! Between the cost of hospital administrators and health insurance companies turning profits, one can see why our healthcare system is so expensive. Salaries of physicians account for less than 10% of the healthcare expenditure coming in at 8.6% according to Becker’s Hospital Review.

How to reopen the US, according to Johns Hopkins and Harvard: Test 20 million people a day, hire an army of contact tracers, and expand healthcare coverage Harvard said it would cost $50 to $300 billion — cheaper than the estimated $350 billion cost of staying closed or opening with no safety net.

A little information about what Anesthesiologists do and how we are helping fight Coronavirus! There are many other important essential workers as well, but this just highlights our field of practice, one in which the public tend to hear and therefore as less aware of our role.
I will be posting my first video later today discussing some about Coronavirus among other non-COVID topics, so feel free to ask questions on this post COVID related or not and I will answer them here or in the video. Stay tuned!
