10 of the hottest startups from Wolves Summit | EU-Startups 09/05/2016

I spent a lot of time at the Wolve's Summit listening to the pitches of the various startups. Some ideas were interesting, but poorly presented in pitches. Some pitches were great, but the idea was not really unique. In general, I think it's a combination of a great idea and even better follow-through in developing the idea through to financing.
My personal favourite was a team which is developing an app which will be based on sign language and will allow easier communication. Unfortunately, they did not make the finals.
I will be very interested to see how these startups go in the future. Maybe the next big thing was right there?

GAP IDENTIFICATION : THE LIGHT BULB

Can you re-invent a light bulb?
Do we WANT to change it or do we NEED to change it?
We have a light-bulb which functions quite well. So why change it?

Before looking at why change, the question to ask is:
Are we ready to take on the challenge of change?

Preparing yourself for change is just as hard as going through the process of the change, so one cannot be without the other.

Tip 1: Sit down. Relax. Have a drink. Think.
Tip 2: Time to look at the problem from different perspectives. Good to have more than one opinion.

Right, let’s look at a number of points of view on this matter :

PROFESSOR : He see’s the problem, it’s too dark! The light bulb must be brighter. To do this he can use a higher resistance wire made from a special alloy encased in an inert gas found 1000 metres below sea level in the Caspian Sea. But problem solved, we have a fantastic bright light. Now an R&D department with an unlimited budget. Don’t ask about timings!!

BUSINESSMAN : He see’s the opportunity, but what will be the cost of one bulb? To sell as many as possible in the shortest time. Production, no problem. We build a factory. We hire people to sell and market the product. Why haven’t we started yet?

ENGINEER : He see’s the big mountain that you have to climb to get the first light bulb produced. What materials can we use, where do we get them. What machines will I need and where will I put them. Do I need gas, energy, water to make this light bulb.

ACCOUNTANT : How many do we have to sell to break even. What’s the IRR, ROI, NPV on the investment? Where are the numbers from and why are they overestimated and don’t include a risk factor

MARKETING : Can we sell change the shape and colour and will it make a whirring sound? Let have a catchy name or slogan.

SALES : Can we sell this world-wide? Which customers will this appeal to the most? What margin can I get on this wholesale and retail? Which shops will I sell this through?

LAWYER : Is the company set up to sell this? Do we have patent right or a licence? Are we insured? Is that light bulb safe to use? What court will the jurisdiction be?

LOGISTICS : How many light bulbs fit onto a pallet?

And what about the poor client? Does he have anything to say in this matter?
What is the client looking for?

CLIENT : Good quality! Good price!
Will this make my life easier? Can I buy this online?

Tip 3: Sit down. Relax. Have a drink. Think.

So, now what?

Well to to make the change, you have to prepare for it. You have to see where you are now and what you need to achieve the vision and the goals which you would like to achieve.

Tip 4 : Don’t be overwhelmed. There are methods to organise this chaos. If in doubt, look at Tip 3.

GAP IDENTIFICATION

1. To define a “gap”, one must define the starting and finishing point. The distance made from the starting point to the finish will be the “gap”. Simple, yes?
2. Next, let’s define all the finishing points. Well, we should know what goals we are trying to achieve, yes? So our finishing points are the goals! This methodology is similar for all products and processes.
3. Our goals form to create a Vision. The Vision will be at the point where the goals meet to create success.
4. So, each Goal must have a time frame and resource, which can be financial, material or people, attached to it. With each Goal formulated, we can now see how far we have progressed from the starting point.
5. Setting this point from the starting point, we can check what is necessary to achieve our goal. This is the “gap” which will have attached to it a time frame and resource.

So, getting back to the Light Bulb example, we can see that the goals can be formulated based on the based on opinions and needs to reach our vision.

The next steps are to will be to complete the MARKET FIT of the product by checking the MARKET READINESS of the product. This we will look at in the next chapter.

Tip 5: This is a process which will be checked & corrected many times. Communication is a key element in working out the optimum result.

16/03/2016

Wizja we właściwym czasie.
