We are not only looking for accuracy, but also fluency! Fluent responses are less likely to go away over time. Make sure when you are teaching those very important functional skills you teach them to fluency!

Great examples of what to say when your kids says "No".
This is great. It labels all the things we teach our kids when we move from a place of authoritarianism (“instinct” in this graphic since it’s the socially normalized, adultist way to treat children). And alternatives in line with what we actually want to model.

When assessing why challenging behavior is being used by a client versus other skills, our team focuses on what the individual is trying to communicate first. We then focus on how to support the individual in communicating their request and having it honored without needing to add an emotional response.
